Did we give up when the German's invaded pearl harbor?   Why would we give up when they shoot down a satellite?

Initial response is complete?  What the hell does that mean?

The dude in charge of monitoring it got drunk and called his supervisor?  Looked outside and laughed while he counted shooting stars?

What the hell is an "initial response" to a fucking satellite falling out of the sky?

Does the staff officer in charge of tracking it just check that block on a clipboard and move on to the next task?

China blew up one of their own a few years ago.  Debris field causes serious problems.

This one won't help the situation.

Space is huge, but there is a whole lot of stuff in pretty close proximity to earth. last I saw there are approx 20,000 objects of baseball size or larger in orbit.

Back in '09 there was an accidental collision between a half ton US comms sat and some old shut down one ton russian sat. things hit eachother at around 25,000 mph. Few years ago the ISS actually had to adjust it's orbit to avoid one of the debris fragments from the collision.

LEO is getting crowded.

Wow, it's incredible to me that such a small low mass object can cause that much damage.  I wonder what that would have done to a space suit if it had hit an astronaut while they were outside performing an EVA.

We blew one up back in the 80s, creating an insane debris field...

Doing ASAT tests on targets that aren't already on a deorbit trajectory (to minimize, but not eliminate the debris field) is stupid.

E=MC2 isn't only for nuclear.  It's just that instead of C = speed of light, it equales speed.  So when you get to ~20,000 MPH and square it, it dosent take much mass to produce a lot of energy.

DMSP-F13.

Interestingly, DMSP-F11 suffered a similar fate in 2004.

According to this paper: 1.5% of break ups are due to collision with debris, 4% are due to battery problems, 45% due to propulsion failures, 29% due to deliberate action, and the remaining 20% are unexplained.

That paper (from 2008) details the breakup of nearly 200 satellites.  The tables starting on page 30 are interesting. A lot of "DELIBERATE. SELF-DESTRUCT". But also a couple "DELIBERATE   HYPERVELOCITY IMPACT"
