Russia's economy is crashing and its currency appears to be in free fall. The ruble plunged by about 12% Monday, meaning it's lost nearly 50% against the dollar this year. Early Tuesday in Russia, the central bank hiked its key interest rate for a sixth time this year to 17% from 10.5%. View Quote A double-whammy of collapsing oil prices and Western sanctions is driving up inflation. Cash is flooding out of the country and the risk that some Russian companies may default is increasing. Russia's central bank has not only been raising interest rates, but has spent nearly $90 billion trying to defend the ruble and prevent prices spiraling out of control. Karma is a bitch! Oh, and alot of the comments are |

Before we gloat too much, let's remember that sometimes unstable governments do crazy things in economic turmoil-like provoke wars.

Well IF oil would stop it's crazy fall.......maybe we would see some stabilization.

I thought they were totally self sufficient and the outside world was just noise.

They've been unloading US Treasuries and buying a LOT of gold for a while now...
This could trigger them to back the Ruble with gold. |

same thing happened in the 80's resulting in the fall of the Soviet Union.

Russia is no where near a modern day equivalent of Germany's military in the late 1930's. It's not the same circumstances at all. You guys gotta learn to see that just because you have similarities, doesn't mean it's going to happen all the same way or end the same way.

"Pesident Vladimir Putin has already ordered government departments to cut their budgets by 5%, and more cuts could follow. Defense and national security has so far been spared the ax -- Russia is pumping trillions of rubles into modernizing its military." So in times of economic uncertainty the Russians do the opposite of us, that's comforting. |

Gee... all we need now is the "Worst wheat harvest in xxx years and a bunch of disguised charter flights out of Mexico" or whatever.

I hope they eat each other.
Figuratively..... Well..... Maybe a little of both |

How was their wheat harvest?
ETA : damnit all to hell. Beat. |

Cool, time to plan a business trip. Just don't tell the wife.

Don't fuck with the anglosphere. Germany and japan learned that lesson. It's Russia's turn now. This time next year Putin will be facing the Irish mans dilemma. Does he eat the potato now, or drink it later.

So, those nuclear bombers they dusted off not too long ago and flying towards us will
be headed back to the barn soon?
|

I doubt Putin will go down without a fight, somewhere, somehow. Wars have been used to keep power in the past.

You guys gotta learn to see that just because you have similarities, doesn't mean it's going to happen all the same way or end the same way. Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of the first Gulf War. If I remember correctly, Iraq had wracked up a pretty good debt fighting Iran. Saddam came up with some nonsensical excuse, and invaded Kuwait, saying they owed him money for doing the dirty work against Iran. Russia isn't the juggernaut Nazi Germany was...but we're not exactly looking real good either. Obama has been sacking generals and our allies don't trust us. War is good politics when you're in trouble. I wouldn't want to be one of Russia's neighbors right now. |
