Just what I have on patrol now is plenty.  Semi AR-15, pump shotgun, handgun.  Some ballistic panels in the body of the cruiser would be appreciated, but I don't see the need for an MRAP.

Less than the average citizen is allowed to use, however once they can demonstrate their ability to match the average concealed carry citizens ability to not shoot innocent bystanders I'd be willing to give them equivalent weaponry.

Police should have the same access that the rest of the civilian population that they are serving have access to.  However, if a civilian has to file special paperwork with the federal government for possession of an item, it should be off limits to the police.

SBRs require a federal stamp?  No SBRs for the local PD.

We need to start getting police agencies to be ON the side of the people, not against it.

Agreed.

If it were up to me, I'd say give them suppressed, semi-auto ARs with an optic, a light, and training that doesn't suck. Having your hearing blown sucks, and the last three should be mandatory for anybody who carries a weapon extensively.

The AVERAGE working cop is not the enemy.

The enemy is generally further up the chain of command.

I'd only add Nothing that a regular civilian can't own or requires government approval for them to own... such as anything you would need any kind of license to obtain...

If I can't walk into the local gun store and walk back out with it within the hour... assuming they have whatever it is in inventory... then the police shouldn't have it either.

The Constitution first.

Then enforce that with anything our military patrol squad uses.

BTW - that's what the people should be armed with as well.

Could that go a long way toward eliminating the Us vs. Them bullshit ?!?!?

The same as a normal citizen. That said, if a normal citizen can have full-auto in a particular area (as they can in many parts of free America) I see no reason to not allow cops to have the same.

Whatever they need to get the job done, including MRAPS, body armor, M4s, whatever.

Any disagreement I have with how police operate has nothing to do with armament, it has to do with tactics and policy.

Only weapons that can be legally purchased and owned by law abiding citizens in their jurisdiction on a "cash and carry" basis.

No select fire weapons, no short barrels, and fully compliant with any and all local gun laws including any "assault weapon" bans.
I'd have CA cops walking around with bullet buttons and the NYPD loading 7 rounds per magazine.

ETA: For the record, I also think that the inverse holds true.  If I can walk into a shop, make a purchase of a firearm, and walk out with it less than an hour later, then I don't have a problem with police having it, whatever it is.

Something they are qualified with. My city has officer's on the street that scored in the 30s on the standard qualification.
