If anything, they are grossly undercounted.  By WHO's own admission.

The more unrestricted traveling that occurs in and out of the contagion's hotbeds, the longer the virus' legs grow and the death toll will continue to rise. The international community must agree on containment procedures at this point.

I think any projections past a certain point, maybe 6 months, are inherently inaccurate. It will take about 6 months for any interventions to take full effect.

Although I do not think there will be any interventions that make a significant impact at this point.

Well, thanks to the US military there will be at least 17 fully equipped and operational Ebola hospitals in the area by the end of November.  That will make some difference.

Problem is, they will be staffed by local workers of varying competence.  And there's nothing we can do to eliminate the poverty, corruption, and ignorance that is helping fuel this epidemic.

In this morning's press conference, the World Health Organization announced the updated numbers of "reported" cases/deaths. Dr Bruce Aylward says, as of this morning, 8,914 Ebola cases and 4,447 deaths have been reported to WHO worldwide. It continues to spread unabated and is growing exponentially. The problem is the math... and as you know, the numbers don't lie. Consider this...

As I pointed out in another thread, it's cheaper than just giving money to the governments of Liberia, Sierra Leone, or Guinea.  You'd be lucky to get 1/10 of it down to the people who need it.

And it still requires a population to come in to be isolated, the same population that loots bloody sheets from an ebola hospital.

It remains to be seen what effect 17 operational ebola hospitals will do. It isn't like there is a treatment. And I sincerely doubt anybody is tracking contacts when there are 1000 new cases every week and dead bodies in the street, not to mention all the cases not reported.

I think it might be too late to make any difference.

GENEVA/LONDON (Reuters) - The Ebola epidemic is still spreading in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia and projections show there could be between 5,000 and 10,000 new cases a week in early December, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday.

The death toll so far in the outbreak, first reported in Guinea in March, has reached 4,447 from a total of 8,914 cases, WHO Assistant Director General Bruce Aylward said. WHO said the number of cases in West Africa will exceed 9,000 this week.

While there are signs that rates of infection are slowing in some of the worst-hit areas, Aylward said the disease has now reached "more districts, counties and prefectures" than it had a month ago, and case numbers would continue to rise.

He stressed it would be "really, really premature" to read success into the apparent slowing numbers in some areas. Aylward told reporters at WHO's Geneva headquarters that the projections for December "could be higher, it could lower but it's going to be in that ball park."

Ebola Patient Traveled By Air Day Before Symptoms Surfaced
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – The CDC has announced that the second healthcare worker diagnosed with Ebola — now identified as Amber Joy Vinson of Dallas — traveled by air Oct. 13, the day before she first reported symptoms.

The CDC is now reaching out to all passengers who flew on Frontier Airlines flight 1143 Cleveland to Dallas/Fort Worth. The flight landed at 8:16 p.m. CT.

The CDC is asking all 132 passengers on the flight to call 1 800-CDC INFO (1 800 232-4636). Public health professionals will begin interviewing passengers about the flight after 1 p.m. ET.

This looks like the appropriate Ebola thread for this.

I pulled up the CDC transmission model, and base lined it for the reported cases in Liberia and Sierra Leone as of 8/28.  From there, I modeled out to 1/20/15, and was in good agreement with their 9/26 publication.  The CDC also had an intervention model estimate for Liberia, which I also incorporated.  I then shoe horned this intervention estimate into the Sierra Leone model since they didn't list anything in their 9/26 paper.

The point of this exercise is to see how well prediction [one prediction] agrees with future case trends.

I'll try to update this graph on a weekly basis.

Dallas Mayor:

"There are two things that I harken back to this. The only way that we are going to beat this is person by person, moment by moment, detail by detail. We have those protocols in place, the city and county, working closely with the CDC and the hospital. The second is we want to minimize rumors and maximize facts. We want to deal with facts, not fear. And I continue to believe that while Dallas is anxious about this and with this news this morning, the anxiety level goes up a level, we are not fearful and I'm pleased and proud of the citizens that I talk to day in and day out knowing that there is hope if we take care and do what is right in these details. It may get worse before it gets better. But it will get better."

Um, he's wrong.  The way to beat this is through quarantine by zone.

So, what do we do?  Quarantine Dallas?

The number of people exposed is quite a bit smaller than all of Dallas.

So, that's 120 at the hospital in Dallas, plus whomever's working with patients in Nebraska and Georgia?  Plus their families, and anyone else they've had contact with?

Yep, so that's like maybe 1,000 people at the far outside.
And the population of DFW is considerably over a million now I think.
Of course if you DONT do anything then in two or three weeks...

indeed.  as this continues to get ever more out of hand in the index countries, cordon sanitaire will be the only option available to us.  we already are witnessing a breakdown in reporting of cases, as medical infrastructure becomes overwhelmed.

it will likely have to be enforced by the military, perhaps those of countries outside the index countries, & will involve much hurt feelings.

the less we are willing to hurt feelings, the more porous the cordon, & the greater the chance it will spread to populations with less native immunity than exists on the African continent.

That's 21 days away from work, and putting the rest of your family up someplace for that period of time unless you have a vacation home to go to.

So Zero is pontificating that he wants Ebola SWAT teams on the ground as soon outbreaks are discovered, Why wasn't that done or why wasn't that being done before?

Obama is still sticking to his party line.

NBC News - Ebola Outbreak: Liberia Needs 79,940 More Body Bags
The West African nation where the Ebola outbreak has taken the most devastating toll needs nearly 80,000 more body bags over the next six months as it battles the deadly virus. An inventory of supplies from the Liberian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare shows the massive gap between the resources the government has and the key supplies it desperately needs to crush the epidemic. Liberia projects a gap of 79,490 body bags and 989,985 protective suits. The ministry's report, dated Oct. 10, also says 2,425 Liberians have died of the viral hemorrhagic fever since the start of the outbreak, including 95 health care workers.

There is some evidence to suggest Reston virus is easier to spread, but this is confounded by the fact that monkeys in cages have a nasty habit of throwing feces at each other.

Those are the Ebola Reston virus, animal only, from a while back.  They aren't marking Dallas for the Ebola Zaire with a star for some reason.

Ebola Reston only infected monkeys, but wasn't it airborn?

Suspected Airborne, it got between monkey cages somehow.

That's Why the government should step in.  Pay them while in quarantine.   It's chump change compared to the cost of inaction.     A pittance, compared to our everyday waste.

Based on the current numbers from the WHO, the current ROI (rate of infection) is 2.02. At this rate, the numbers by the end of the month will be - Oct 31, 2014 - Infected: 15,134 Dead: 10,594 ROI: 2.02

Moving forward, it gets one's attention…

Nov, 2014 - Infected: 30,570 Dead: 21,399 ROI: 2.02

Dec, 2014 - Infected: 61,752 Dead: 43,226 ROI: 2.02

Jan, 2015 - Infected: 124,739 Dead: 87,317 ROI: 2.02

Feb, 2015 - Infected: 251,973 Dead: 176,381 ROI: 2.02

Mar, 2015 - Infected: 508,986 Dead: 356,290 ROI: 2.02

Apr, 2015 - Infected: 1,028,152 Dead: 719,706 ROI: 2.02

May, 2015 - Infected: 2,076,867 Dead: 1,453,807 ROI: 2.02

Jun, 2015 - Infected: 4,195,272 Dead: 2,936,690 ROI: 2.02

Jul, 2015 - Infected: 8,474,449 Dead: 5,932,114 ROI: 2.02

Aug, 2015 - Infected: 17,118,387 Dead: 11,982,871 ROI: 2.02

Sep, 2015 - Infected: 34,579,141 Dead: 24,205,399 ROI: 2.02

Oct, 2015 - Infected: 69,849,865 Dead: 48,894,906 ROI: 2.02   (one year from now)

Nov, 2015 - Infected: 141,096,727 Dead: 98,767,709 ROI: 2.02

Dec, 2015 - Infected: 285,015,389 Dead: 199,510,773 ROI: 2.02

Jan, 2016 - Infected: 575,731,087 Dead: 403,011,761 ROI: 2.02

Apr, 2016 - Infected: 4,745,410,514 Dead: 3,321,787,360 ROI: 2.02  (over 3 BILLION dead by Spring of 2016 - HALF the planet)

Just had to throw this at a liberal cousin from Canad that likes Obama and the freaks allowing people from West Africa into the US.

First I pointed out that they are not safe in Canada. Then I posted the 1st and last line of the above.

If that doesn't wake her up. Then she is lost.

Why do Canadians love Obama when he has publicly bashed them in the past?

Fucken dumb shits.

What makes it worse is the Liberian government really has no idea how many cases there are.

How many people have died from Ebola in West Africa?

It sounds an easy question, but the answer is certainly not.

The most recent official figure from the World Health Organization puts the number of deaths at 4,447.

But 12,000 could be a better estimate. Getting to this figure highlights a number of issues with the Ebola data.

They had 20 cases total, and 8 deaths.

If we stop our current outbreak at 2 then we're doing pretty well.
