I do get a chuckle out of small things being packaged in absurdly large boxes, so long as I'm not paying for it.
That said, years ago my parents mailed me a USB receiver for a wireless mouse in an semi-padded envelope. Someone ripped open the package, stole it (I presume thinking it was a memory stick), and taped it back up. I can understand why you would use a box --- so that someone can't feel the contents. |

I have a couple hundred of those hanging on a rod on my work bench, every time we put on a dual sling point we end up with an extra end plate

|
For a lot of companies doing big volume, it's cheaper to only buy 3-4 different sizes of boxes in bulk, rather than to keep a wide assortment of packaging around for small orders. The box may have been cheaper than an envelope if the majority of their orders will fit in that size box.
Or they may have just been out of envelopes at the time they pulled your order. |

Go ya one better.
I snail mail ordered some parts from Numrich several years ago. About $60.00 worth of stuff & thought, hey that plastic 1911 bushing wrench could be handy. Cool it's only 85¢. That was back when they had a $7.95 min shipping charge. I got my box a couple weeks later. It contained ONLY the plastic 1911 bushing wrench & a note saying the other parts were no longer available. Yep, charged me $7.95 shipping. A call to complain about their stupidity went no where. I have not bought anything from them since. |

At least it wasn't on a six month backorder. I'm sure the 20 round PMAG (showed in-stock) I added to try to justify the $6 shipping is though. Quoted:
Let me guess, you ordered it Christmas eve. Guessing games are fun, but no. 12-19-12. It's less than a 9 hour drive to Brownell's. An envelope probably would make the trip quicker. An envelope would fit in the mailbox too! I was going to call and cancel the PMAG because I don't need them to ship me a single magazine in a box of this size but then I remembered they're rather precious nowadays. Their online customer service interface gives me a headache just trying to look at my order too. I guess Midway USA has had me spoiled. Lastly, when you order this you'd think it comes with the QD swivel, wouldn't you? |

Ups ground and FedEx ground cost the same to ship whether its a box or envelope. This is assuming the weight is not off by more than a few ounces between the two. Ground shipping methods only go off of weight, not box dimensions.
|

I assumed it was to make it too big to easily slip into ones pocket.

Panic bought, didn't you? What the fuck? Are these in danger of being banned or something? No. I needed one. Holy shit. |

Ground shipping methods only go off of weight, not box dimensions. That's not completely true. There are dimensional limits on length, width and height. If you break one of those limits, it's considered an oversize package and the shipping cost is significantly higher. |

Separately available QD sling swivel accepts 1¼" wide slings and gives a full 360° of rotation

I've never felt the need to order anything from Brownell's (except a front sight bench block) before. |

You should put a review up on their site and mention that they are sold seperately. |

same for me. I got a LPK no trigger group, from PSA, it came in a box about 2.5 times that size. I was like... uh oh, I mustve got other stuff I had in my cart and didnt notice

The item you order is titled "QD Receiver End Plate", and right below it is "QD Sling Swivel". Each has a separate add to cart button. |

What other online retailer lists things like this? Why would they put them on the same page even? |

I got a box not too far off from that a couple years ago, with a single back-ordered recoil spring!

If it makes the OP feel better, Brownells shipped a 1911 trigger bow in a box, within a box a year ago for me.

It's not obvious. What other online retailer lists things like this? Why would they put them on the same page even? Every good retailer does this. They're grouping like items together on a single page, with add-to-cart options for each product. It makes it easier to add multiple items to your cart without going to multiple pages. Do you really want to shop on a website that requires you to click/load a separate page for every single item you want to order? |

Last year Sears had a big online only sale on GearWrench tools.
A few days later 4 huge boxes show up, each had just one small item inside. |

No shit, I ordered a set of JP reduced power springs that arrived in the same size box.

You would think more places would use $5.25 USPS flat rate shipping boxes on an order with a bunch of small parts.

I raffed.
AM General (producer of the HMMWV and civilian "H1") does the same thing. They offer free drop shipping on ANY of their parts (which kicks ass). I've never had a problem with an item being shipped in a manner that it could be damaged in shipping. Most items are fairly appropriately packed, but I've received my fair share of items just like in the OP's picture. |
