Between all the gear, types of diving, locations, and experiences, I'd think it would be a fairly active forum.

Maybe call it  The Dive Locker?

We've got a lot of divers on this board, from the recreationals to the pros.

I think it'd do well.

Edit: I've been requested to create a poll to gauge interest, see here:

I'm into snorkeling, trying to add spearfishing and possibly get scuba certified, but I'd rather see those threads staying in the outdoors section. I'm not big on having so many sub forums tho...

A dedicated scuba forum could have a stickied "SCUBA FOR NOOBS" thread and a stickied "SCUBA PICS" thread.  Plus all the noobs every summer asking questions.  It'd be a good forum IMO.

Same!

I've actually been thinking a lot about this the last couple of days (dont laugh I was diving at the time). Usually when the idea for a new forum here comes up I almost always think its a bad idea. take some of teh GD forums: books, cooking, sports, movies. I love to read, I read bubbas blog on cooking when I can, I love sports and love movies. I just think all of those topics are big enough that I wish they would of stayed mixed up in GD for all of us to learn about. Thats how I get mo smarter. Im always looking for my next book to read, but I almost never go into the book forum because of hte lack of traffic and all that.

Diving is different for a bunch of reasons. first of all, there is and has always been a very strong diver presence on Arfcom. Diving falls into that group of sports and hobbies that many of us however you wanna characterize us tend to be interested in, so theres tons of people here already.

Second. as others have already pointed out, we have some real no bullshit dive experts on board. diving is second maybe only to ssupposed BUD/s Grads when it comes to bullshitters. I would love to have a place where some of these guys would chime in from time to time on stuff they used to do for a living or are still interested in, and I'm sure they would as well.

Third. the competition. no matter what kind of diving you do, or where you do it, I think we can mostly agree that there is really only one board on the internet that has grown over time to the point where its not only become massive, but has always pretty much wiped out all the smaller lesser quality boards out of existence. The place im talking about of course is scubaboard.com. The problem with SB.com  isn't that it is badly run, or that it has bad members, or an out of control COC, it has aboslutely none of those problems. SB is a fantastic website full of thousands upon thousands of great knowledgable members, good site staff, easy to use forum, and enough information stuffed in it to literally last you till you drop dead.

the problem that I think exists with SB is really the product of its success. Its so massive and has so many forums that for a brand new freshly qualified open water diver, even just hunting down specfiically the 'Im a brand new diver and blank' tacked thrads they have, its still like trying to drink water from a firehose.

I spent about 90 miuntes there last night just looking through all the brand new diver threads and info, its just impossible to find stuff without a ton of effort with the amount of info they keep up there.  SB is a very big site, 210,000 members to Arfcoms approx 310,000. Imagine if Arfcom was a site that strictly dealt with a single topic, say 310000 people here to only talk about AR's. Forget it.

the nice thing about a scuba forum here, especially for new divers is that they can toss out questions themselves, along with the usaual banter between the more expereienced dive bunch about the usual but the new guys can have the questions answered for them instead of the other way around. Plus a lot of us already know each other, at least from here and the other parts of the site. Which brings me to the the next to last point.

Safety. This is really the most legitimate reason to break a single topic away from GD in my opinion. diving, like shooting has the potential for danger, especially if you out there getting your info from some retard on GD who refuses to believe that Daltons law is real or some other crazy shit that only they could argue about. It would be better served for everyone if the riff raff of GD was segregated when talking about diving and diving related gear/science/physiology etc.

And perhaps finally and of course the best reason. Diving like shooting offers so many areas in which two people can disagree and fight over it makes 9 vs 45 look like its taking place at a diplomatic summit.

so those are my reasons, just felt like putting them out there.

That's what get's me excited about the possibility of a dive forum here! I can only imagine the different disciplines in divers found on this board.

So I spoke to the man in charge last week about getting this forum going. We need to turn this into the official thread for a new forum (OP edit) and start getting more people in here to express their interest, then we can talk to GB about working his arfcom magic.

I love diving, especially cave diving.

As far as dive forums go, I spend most of my time on Cave Divers Forum.

Awesome. I got into SCUBA because I wanted to get into cave diving. Haven't been diving in about 3 years and hadn't been caving in about 5 years.. until this weekend! Did a very easy though very wet cave on Saturday and I have a SCUBA refresher course this weekend
