R.I.P. Shots. Best dog I've ever had the privilege of owning. He was a 4 y/o rescue, my first pitbull and I took a chance on taking him and was rewarded with the most sweet, loyal dog anyone could ask for. He passed away this spring after only having him a year and a half. Taken from us way too early.

Yesterday we had to put JD (Jane Doe), our 17ish year old Calico, to sleep. She had been battling hyperthyroidism for a long time, and it had really taken its toll on her heart (the hyperthyroidism), the kidneys (the medicine), and the rest of her body as well.  She appeared to be having sight issues, and significant arthritis. Yesterday she took a fall on our stairs, and was having trouble regaining her feet. She couldn't even step over the rim of the litter box anymore. We took her to the vet yesterday afternoon and said our goodbyes. She went very quickly, just putting her head down and going to sleep.

Bye JD - I hope you had as much fun being around us as we did with you present.

Shelby, she was about 14 when she had to be put down due to kidney failure. She died at home in my arms. I still think about her all the time. She was a rescue and the best dog that I ever had.

My buddy of 19 years, Napoleon:

I drove ten miles in the big blizzard of 2010 just to hold him until he passed.

Took me 4 hours to go 10 miles. It was worth it. He died in my arms after 3 hours of me holding him by the fire at my parents' house.

I couldn't bury him for a week because of the snow, so I packed him in a box in a snow pile, and kept vigil to keep foxes away. I didn't have shit else to do at the time. Work closed for the week.

I had all the nieces and nephews out to witness his burial so they could learn about death. They watched me place him in his coffin that I made, nail it shut, and bury him.

It was a good lesson for them, and they got to see their tough uncle cry over a simple pet.

Posted in Team on 1-4-12.

Thanks to JBlitzen for the heads up on this thread.

She had been in our lives for 18 years.
We adopted her at about a year old when I was on the road, to keep my wife company.
I've lost most of my family, but it's amazing how a little rugrat can get under your skin over 18 years....

She ruled the house and was definitely the "alpha" of our pets.

She had been in failing health and had lost 2/3 of her body weight over the last year or so, but had remained active, playful, and scarfed everything you would give her.

She was even playing with our white cat, running around the house 4 days ago.

Over the last 48 hours she completely stopped eating and drinking, and started wandering the house in a wobbly, listless daze, stopping to stare at the wall, or whatever was in front of her, for several minutes at a time.
Breathing was fitful.
She seemed to be seeking somewhere secluded to hide.

My wife deals with death with her job, and agreed it was finally time.

I took my little buddy in and held her as they put her to sleep.
(I asked if they would visit the house, but apparently the vet had had some bad experiences doing home visits for this reason.)

She's the top of the three below, we lost the other calico, CC, about a year ago, she was 18.

I just finished burying her next to CC.

RIP Sweetie, CC, you will be missed.

I am heart broken. I posted a few weeks ago about him having issues and got some great advice from a Vet on here. Well they thought it was kidney disease at first then follow up tests with a second vet earlier this week confirmed it was cancer. He may have only been 8 years old but i just could not bring my self to put him thru cancer treatment. he had lost about 20 pounds over the past month and a half and was begining to be unable to walk steady. It was time..thank you for watching over us while we slept.  I will miss you Sherman..

Our big boy, Mox, who loved to lay in the tub,,,

And my dear, sweet Shepherd/Border Collie, Azhia, with failed kidneys and liver, just a few days before we sent her on.... She was our first dog, we got her from the Charleston Animal Shelter a couple months after we were married, she was so small, but with a heart so big, who would have thought it would have ever stopped beating?

Just found this thread.

Buddy, I found him at work in December 2006. It was cold and he walked up to my squad car. I took him home, fixed his massive ear infection and he became my loyal friend. Lost him last April 11. he got sick seemingly overnight and passed while I was holding him waiting for an xray at the vet.

This is Jack, just a few months before he died in my arms:

He was half Black Lab, half Border Collie, goofy as can be, loyal, loving and one of the best damned dogs I think I've ever known.
He got cancer and it ate him up in a matter of months and when it was time, just as I had promised, I sat in the yard on a beautiful sunny day and held him in my arms while the Vet gave him the shot, and I held him to me, sobbing until he was gone.

I miss you buddy... I miss you so much...

Bally (February 2000 - 9 June 2012)

Named after the coastal town of Ballybunion, Co. Kerry, Ireland, not to mention one of my favorite pubs in Brooklyn, NY, Bally came into our lives shortly after the passing of my father. My Dad wasn't a "dog guy," and Bally was our first dog. Blind and deaf, Her hips were shot to the point that she could no longer get up without great pain. The vet came out to the house yesterday and helped us do the right thing.

It has been fewer than twenty-four hours, and I miss her greatly.

A Parting Prayer

Dear Lord, please open your gates and call St. Francis to come escort this beloved companion across the Rainbow Bridge.

Assign her to a place of honor, for she has been a faithful servant and has always done her best to please us.

Bless the hands that send her to you, for they are doing so in love and compassion, freeing her from pain and suffering.

Grant us the strength not to dwell on our loss. Help us remember the details of her life with the love she has shown us. And grant us the courage to honor her by sharing those memories with others.

Let her remember us as well and let her know that we will always love her. And when it's our time to pass over into your paradise, please allow her to accompany those who will bring us home.

Thank you, Lord, for the gift of her companionship and for the time we've had together.

And thank you, Lord, for granting us the strength to give her to you now.

Amen.

Our cat was almost 19 years old and she hadn't been eating hardly anything or defecating in over a week.  She would spend all day laying in the dark behind the couch and it seemed to hurt her to move.  We took her to the vet and they said there was nothing they could do, so we had to have her euthanized.
I didn't think it would hit me as hard as it did...but she was born in our first apartment we had after getting married and she's been with us the whole time, like a constant in our lives.

RIP Clawedia.

We lost our German Shepherd today.

Nikki, our German Shepherd was going to be 8 years old in December. She has always been a bundle of energy. I described her as a 3 year old kid on a sugar high!

A few weeks ago, we noticed that she wasn't herself. We took her to our vet, and everything seemed okay. Blood work came back negative and we thought, maybe she was just getting old.

About a week ago we noticed that she was limping badly on her left front leg. Again, we took her to our vet on Thursday and she thought it might be bone cancer. She sent us to another vet with a better x-ray system.

After being evaluated, this vet thought that Nikki might have a tumor on her brachial plexus. She was given some medication and we took her home to wait for the results of some tests.

Nikki wouldn't eat, not even her favorite foods. She would get up to drink water and would even let me know when she needed to go outside. Because Nikki could not walk up or down steps without pain, my wife and I were sleeping downstairs with her.

Around 7 a.m. this morning, Nikki had a seizure. We took her over to the emergency vet hospital, where she passed peacefully. My wife and I are devastated. We love animals, as we also have 2 ferrets and 9 cats. As all animal lovers know, our pets are more than just pets, they are indeed a part of our family. Nikki was a super dog and will be missed greatly. She was my buddy, friend and geocaching buddy. We take comfort in knowing that she is no longer in pain but enjoying herself in doggie heaven.

Gone, but never forgotten.

Ballas was very special to me he was my 1st Dog and it was very hard for me to have him put down.
I had him for close to 14 years. My now ex-wife found him in front of the hotel she worked.
The hotel was located on Ballas Road and that is how he got his name.

Born January 1999 passed on to the other side on November 21st 2012.

Farfel, not your typical Beagle. He was about 40 pounds and was the most un-cuddly Beagle I ever saw. Would be just as happy to fight another dog as to play with him. Made some of the strangest noises I have ever heard. Dropped dead just shy of 12 years old.

href=http://imageshack.us/a/img829/6711/farfel.jpg  Uploaded with ImageShack.us" />

Gus,Joe and Blackie. Blackie was Farfel's daughter. Joe (yellow Lab) was sick from day one, but made it almost 13 years, somehow. He had a series of health issues and seemed to lose the will to live and had to be put down. Blackie went a year later from Liver failure:

http://imageshack.us/a/img802/6997/joeblackiegus.jpg

Gus was a Pit Bull mix that lived to be over 14 years old. He had prostate cancer. When he was close to the end, we told everyone that knew him that he was a Pit Mix and they had survived hugging him. He never started a fight in his life. Amazing jaw power, "Finger amputatin' teeth", as a couple of vets said. I could put my hand inside that mouth and if I tucked my thumb in, not touch his teeth on either side. Orville was a cat found on our rental property and we kind of got stuck with him for 17 years. BIG cat, about 25 pounds. For years, he and Gus were best buds, until the dreaded "nut bite", and Gus never wanted Orville behind him again:

King was a giant pain in the butt sometimes, but to me, he's the greatest dog I ever had.
http://imageshack.us/a/img152/6030/129819152319618537.jpg

King and Molly were littlermates, some sort of Lab/Doberman, and probably Husky mix. King was the smartest dog I ever had. Molly only came to life in the back yard, where she was boss and anything with 4 legs was attacked. Mom and them all went in 2012:

I had to put my beautiful Bane down last August (the fluffy white and yellow one). He had kidney failure and dumping $800 dollars into him in a weeks worth of time didn't help. I sobbed like a baby. But couldn't bring myself to put him down for a few more days. Then I sobbed again and again.  This cat would come to his name and suckle on my shirt even though he was 10 years old. The biggest love bug. Full of antics. Knocked everything off the table as he sprawled out. Loved boxes--even small ones. I still find his hair around the house.   He had an easily upset stomach--so I had to clean him frequently--and he loved it. He even liked baths. He would get kitty chin acne. He had clogged tear ducts so his face was always runny with eye goo. I'd joke that he was the "bane" of my existence.  He was clearly favored over the others. I couldn't help myself.

The gray kitty is Szandor (aka Z-man). Bane's litter brother. Obviously from a different Daddy. Z-man was a manx. He had no tail. Not even a nub. He liked the quiet. He would not only come RUNNING to his name, he would speak (it didn't sound like a meow). He slept in bed with us every night, loving tight cuddles in your arms that would make him knead you...until he began to lose control of his bladder. A few months before Bane got sick, Z-man lost control of his bladder regularly. He would leak on all the furniture and beds. Luckily we have no carpets. We were told he wouldn't live to be 2 or 3 as a kitten....so being 10 years old was a good deal. He had a happy life. But after almost a year of washing blankets constantly, laying fresh ones on the chairs and couch, keeping all bedroom doors shut ...and not allowing him to sleep with us anymore...it was becoming unfair to him. He was at the point where he'd let his entire bladder go while sleeping and lay in it for hours.  No medications helped.  So this past April I put on my big girl panties and put him down.

The two girl cats we have now are loving the extra attention. The mean one is being super sweet and lovey. I think she's scared I'll take her away and not return with her like the other two! lol

Lord help us when it's our dogs. . .
