Well, I got my first cormorant.  Funny looking thing.  I'm pretty sure I'm going to go back and run my merlin as soon as this quest chain is done.

Not sure if I want to get back into this or not though.  Its a big time consuming thing lol

ETA:  Cormorant lost in the last advanced combat mission.  Guy kicked my ass at range.  Couldn't get more than one or two shots with missiles off, and guns were 5k out of range.  Damn webs are a pain in the ass.

Time to make 1.6 mil to get another destroyer

I just started a free triel a little under a week ago. i chose Minmatar (guns!). I barely made it through the final advanced military training mission. I went into the mission with short range guns and some ammo that has a 50% range penalty (my short range guns were shooting at half their effective range). I put every gun I had on that last guy and prayed I'd take him out before I either ran out of ammo or het got me. At the end I had no sheild, no armor, no capacitor and aound 1/3 - 1/4 of hull/structure left..

After that I decided I wasn't going out without something with some longer range and some ammo that doesn't have a range penalty. It's actually come in handy in several generic missions where I can start beating on a missle pirate at longer range while i try to get in close enough to use my main battery of shorter range guns.

Since I downloaded the trial under CCP's "buddy" scheme I get three weeks to try it out. I'm tempted to start the "Sisters of Eve" mission arc I've heard about but apparently there's a new update for Eve due to launch in less than a week so I'll just tool around doing generic missions and some mining for a few more days and try the mission arc after the update is launched.

I did stumble across an incursion. I was just zooming around in high security minmatar space and while passing through one system saw some extra messages about the system being invaded or something with penalties to player shields/armor and weapons. I decided that looking for some of the invaders to beat up would be pushing my luck just a bit too far. I still travel through that system from time to time but I don't hang around.

I haven't decided yet if I'll keep playing after the trial is over. I'll give it another week or so and see how I'm doing.

Edit: I'm open to ship names. Babealon 9? Meat Waggon?

Please link the KM.

No one touched me :(
I even bumped people. I guess a badger with strippers, tourists, and a janitor isn't worth shooting.

I took your idea when my corp got war dec'd. Loaded my Sigil with male dancers, booze and anti biotics. Named the ship

I'm not in Null, or FW, so this might be a dumb question. I see a few Dreddit on Fweddit kills in that report, I thought Fweddit and Dreddit were allied, no?.

If 1969iggy does the Sisters of Eve mission arc, a warning. Near the end of that arc are two missions, Chasing Shadows, and Our Man Dagan, that are both pretty hard the first time you do them. Most of the Sisters of Eve arc can be completed solo in a frigate or destroyer, as long as you don't charge in to every fight. Chasing Shadows and Our Man Dagan are fairly hard to solo in a destroyer, especially for a new player who doesn't have their skills at high level and probably won't have equipped their ship all that well either. For those two missions, getting someone to come along and help you isn't a bad idea at all.

I lost a destroyer doing Chasing Shadows and decided to give that mission a rest for a couple of weeks, then came back in a cruiser after I'd skilled up some more. I got through Chasing Shadows easily enough and almost hit a wall on the next mission, Our Man Dagan. I eventually got through it without losing my ship but I refitted my ship three or four times trying to come up with a setup that could withstand the damage and put out enough damage to beat Dagan at the same time.

That's the reason I mentioned it. You either need help, or to know what you're doing, or just have enough skill to finish it. So he'll either learn how to team up with someone, or fit his ship proper.
The other reason I mentioned it was because when I was a noob, I didn't know about it. No one really tells you anything. The first time I ran the SOE arc was in a Myrmidon with T2 drones. The second time was in a Rupture with T2 arty and T2 drones. I lost a drone to the harbinger because for some stupid reason I didn't have mission BC on my overview. I only noticed there was one more Red + to kill because I lost that drone.

What's a mission? I heard mining was the shit!

If you've played another role playing game before, missions are Eve's version of "quests". You talk to a game controlled character (an "agent"), they give you a task to do, you do the task then talk to the character again and get a reward.

Unlike other MMO's, Eve does not have a huge number of different missions to do, you will eventually start repeating the same missions, even if you go to different agents.

Security missions are combat missions, go to location X, blow stuff up, then return to collect the reward. There are also mining missions (go to location X, mine ore Y and bring it back), distribution missions (carry item X to location Y), science missions (I haven't done any of those yet myself).

Mining itself is boring, very boring. Shoot lasers at space rocks and watch your ship slowly will up with ore. Depending on where you are mining you can be attacked by other players or by game controlled "pirates" and specialised mining ships don't have weapons so you either mine in a combat ship (not very efficient), run away in your mining ship, or you train yourself to use "drones" which fight anyone that attacks you first. If you're mining in the noob friendly areas of the game, being attacked by another player is very rare, but having a couple of weak pirates try to ambush you is fairly common. Two basic light combat drones can keep the pirates off your back 99% of the time in the noob areas. When you start going into the less noob friendly areas of the game, the pirates get stronger and the chance of being attacked by another player increases.

And just because i can, here are a couple of animated movies set in the Eve game. The first two are about 40 minutes long each, the third is about 1 hour 20 mins. FYI, even though the movies show the ships having multiple crew members, in the actual game, you don't have a crew on a ship, just yourself. Even the biggest ships in the game are run with only  one pilot (one player).

Now I have a new toon with some cheap tackle atrons.  Thinking about joining eve university for a bit, till I'm back up to speed on the game and to expand myself beyond my prior solo and small gang pvp habits.

Anyone involved in the alliance tourney or that belongs to EvE Univeristy at the moment?

Just had my second Vexor in two days shot out from under me in .02. Iwent there to pick up a mission to raise standing. I came out of the gate and was surrounded by red skulls. I was dead in a few seconds. I am now back to mining to raise funds for another ship. I am going to just grind mining until I get a Myrmadon and then just grind level 2 missions until I can find a pvp corp to join to learn to fight in the thing. I am mildly discouraged.

There are map filters in game showing kills and pod kills in the last hour.  That helps.  You can also show useful things like ships in space and jumps in the last hour.

The more activity those show the more likely to be hostiles.  Any low-sec entry system close to a trade hub is dangerous.  Rancer and Amamake are traditional hot spots.  Adjust the time frame on the map filters to get a bigger picture on which systems are regularly dangerous.  If a system has 100s of kills in the last week it's likely to be an issue.

If you have to transit a low-sec stretch to get to a mission try it first in a frig.  Scout the area and save yourself the headaches of getting ganked.  If you have an alt you can use him to scout cheaply.  Even if he's on the same account as your main you get move them both into position then just alternate scouting and moving.

There are as many tricks to keep from getting ganked as there are tricks to ganking.  It's takes a lot of experience or training to learn.

If you're just grinding standing, don't take missions that take you to lowsec.
The Vexor is a really good ship. If you don't have the skills to run the Vexor really well, the Myrmidon isn't going to be any better. It probably wouldn't have mattered which ship you were flying when you jumped through that gate, they probably would've killed you anyway. The Vexor can easily handle level 2 missions. Especially when you start to get your Drone skills up.
If your goal is PVP, don't waste skill points on mining, especially if you're still new to the game. And don't wait until you have a BC to find a corp. PVP corps especially, can use frig pilots for tackle. You'll lose a lot of ships, but get in on a lot of kills. One of our new guys was still rocking a slasher. We got into a brawl in null. Not only did he not get targeted, but he had the presence of mind to lock and tackle every pod he could reach, and he was webbing down any nearby ship for the big guns. He was worried about not having enough DPS before we went out, and he came back with a bunch of corpses.

Ok, so suggestions on what skills to advance first?  I am currently waiting for Gallente Frigate to #4, I have a day left to figure out what to train so i can queue it up and keep it going.

(P.S. no idea what I want to do in game, but I don't think mining is for me, incursions sound like they might be cool)

Thanks!

P.S. what do you need to contact people in game, just the first name of the character?  First and last?

Eve is a stone bitch of a game. But you'll never find anything like it. I played for eight years like it was my job. I have a Titan and a couple supers. Can fly most any ship in the game.

Stick with it. It's definitely worth it if you have the time and energy. Find a good corp that will mentor new guys. Once you find a good corp to fly with it all comes together.

As far as what to do, don't limit yourself to missions or mining. I hate missions like a slug hates salt. Incursions are better and mining is tolerable but I always had the most fun in industry. A builder/hauler alt is very useful. Low end blueprints are cheap and you can mine your own minerals if you want.   Find a local market with a niche that isn't being filled and fill it. Ammo, drones, whatever isn't available locally is an opportunity. Buy liquid ozone and isotopes at a hub and stock markets  near 0.0. Keep an eye on mineral price fluctuations and buy low.

That's just a few things I've done to support my pvp habits.

While your online focus on training short skills then set longer ones when you log off. Don't worry about doing your skills to level 5until you need to.

Eventually, you'll want Frigates up to 5.
Drones is good as well, especially flying Gallente, you'll want to be able to field 5 drones pretty quickly.
I'm not an expert on incursions, but from what I do know, they usually take Logi Cruisers, T3 or Battleships.
If you go for the combat ships, you'll want T2 guns, and training up for T2 small hybrids will benefit you in your frigate.
And it's boring, but your engineering skills need to be pumped up so you can actually fit stuff on your ship.
And armor skills, again boring, but if you stick with Gallente ships, and most PVP ships lean toward armor, you'll want to get your resistances up.

When I was new to the game, I used the certificates as a guide to what needed to be trained. I learned about the different skills by looking through them to see which I could poach easily.
The other thing I did, when not training for something specific, was to work on the core fitting certificates. Once I could fly a BC decently, I focused on finishing them out. I didn't have the income to afford a T3 Cruiser, so instead of working up to that, I finished my core skills. With core skills done, and Cruiser V wrapped up, it was pretty amazing how easy it was to go through finishing the prereqs for all of the advanced cruisers. And by comparison, training up T2 Medium weapons didn't look so bad. T2 Large still suck tho, I've got a week to go on Sentry Drone Interfacing.

P.S. what do you need to contact people in game, just the first name of the character?  First and last?

It depends on the name. There's a search function, but it's pretty limiting if the person you are looking for has a common name.
And there are a lot of alternate spellings. For example, there might be a James Smith, and a Jamez Smith, and a James Smiith, and a hundred other variations.

If you're not bubbled (0.0) and get podded, then you're not doing it right. Well, also barring lag. Most of my deaths are from lag and suicide dictors/hictors,

I stopped using implants except for specific purposes. Mostly command ships and supers. Sometimesk fitting implants can make the difference on a tight fit.

One skill you'll want to max is weapon upgrades and advanced weapon upgrades. Makes a world of difference for fitting.

Also, there are some programs and apps that are handy. I don't know if evemon is still viable or not but used to be very handy.

I have eve neocom on my iPad and its very good for skill planning and a bunch of other stuff.

EveMon is still used. As well as EFT, EVE Fitting Tool.
Also, there's Aura and Evanova for Android.

I keep a set of +3s in for skill training, and the powergrid hardwireing implant. I could probably afford to use +4s because I don't get podded that often.
According to Battleclinic, our corps favorite prey is pods. LOL. It's not uncommon to tackle someone, and wait for a bubble before blowing their ship up.

Ok, so playing around with Neocom on the iPhone and looking into the certs, it's become painfully clear that I need a crapload of skills that I don't have the books for.

Any suggestions on the best way to do this?  Eve-U?  I heard they will pay for skill books for you.

Currently going through the explorer career tutorials, learning how to scan down.  I suck so far at it. :)

Also, do the implants help speed the learning time on these skills?  Worth getting some and leaving them in station when you are running missions, and then fitting them before you log out?

You can't unplug implants without destroying them.

Buy them. In the beginning they're cheap, they become progressively more expensive.
I remember the first time I had to drop 50 million on a skillbook.
Currently, I've got all the pre reqs for Capital Ships, but not the heart to spend 400,000,000 on it.
Then it'd be another 100 million for the Dreadnaught book.
And after that, well, I could only afford to fly it on the test server.

The first five implant slots are for attribute enhancers. They can give from 1 to 5 additional points to your attributes. This will speed up your training accordingly. Also, since you are asking, I'll assume you haven't remapped your attributes. You might want to look into that. It'll help burn through a bunch of your training.
Implants can't be removed, only destroyed. As you do the tutorials, you'll receive some +1 and +2 implants as rewards. If you continue to do missions, you'll receive more +2 implants as rewards from e-mail agents. They cost little to nothing, so plug them in, you don't have anything to lose and you'll speed up training.
Once you can afford, and have the training for +4 and +5 implants, you'll want to look into making some jump clones. I have clones with expensive training implants for when I know I'll be offline for a while. I jump into the buffed clone and take advantage of the extra training, then when I get back, I jump into my cheaper clone.
If you look at one of the skills you're training, it'll show the primary and secondary attributes used for that skill. You can modify how your attribute points are used to match what you plan on training. Something to think about is to set up a skill training plan in EveMon, and play around with the order to maximize your training. It'll show you how you need to remap your attributes to make the best use of your time.

Ah, good to know.  Would it be safe to assume that I shouldn't bother till I am somewhat proficient with the game and not likely to die from my own stupidity?  :)

Have not remapped.  Bone stock so to speak, 20 in everything but Charisma which is 19.  Worth remapping?  I hear you can only do it once or twice a year, right?
