I really don't know much about this thing. I found it on Facebook.

So how does it shoot? Intresting that it is within just over a oz. How does the aluminum compare? I have never shot the aluminum carrier. I bought it used and didn't know much about it or it short comings. So I never used it because I didn't want to ruin it. The Ti carrier shoots fine. I just put it in my setup that I was running the JP carrier in. So I need to experiment with turning down the gas some more after reducing the carrier weight. I ordered a few new adjustable gas blocks. I plan to build 2-3 identical uppers and run them head-to-head for a real good comparison. |

A lighter BC makes recoil go away?
Not sure I would buy anything from a gun manufacturer with no understanding of physics of the operation of guns. Nothing makes recoil go away. Lower reciprocating mass makes the gun move less during recoil. One might say perceived recoil is reduced. |

This is a VERY interesting thread. I have committed ALL my builds to be ultra light weight competition AR-15's with the least amount of recoil as possible for the fastest follow up shots.
I have been largely successful but am still tuning my two prototypes. One is a piston AR carbine with a 14.5" barrel, a modified ( to work in an AA piston set up)JP SS light weight melonited shiny black carrier and enhanced JP bolt. I have ZERO muzzle rise and some recoil with a Spike DYNACOMP. Very nice AR-15! Weight with a GOOD red dot and no mag, Samson 12" rail is 6.1 lbs The OTHER one is of even more interest because of its uniqueness. It carries a 18inch 31 ounce fluted SS (crucible SS) with a PRI MSTN QC brake, carbon fiber or carbon polymer "everything else". Not really. The BOLT is a old but NIB SMITH ENTERPRISES 3.5 ounce alloy carrier that I need to get Nib or Nib-X coated to reduce wear on the underside. But right now it works PERFECTLY. I have a POF gas key with a POF roller cam. I use POF roller cams on everything. I digress. The main reason for posting is about the MUCH cheaper BCG choice I made. I cant help but to give info on what is supporting my light weight BCG's. Oh, the weight of my 18 inch 3 gun is 5.9 lbs WITH a Weaver 1-3 scope with a "cat tail" What a SCOPE! Perfect and so light. The 3.5 ounce carrier is still being tuned. I am trying the JP captured spring entity as well as various buffers and buffer springs. Getting a FLAT shooter is child's play. Getting recoil where I want it is harder to do. I will be victorious eventually.. The only titanium I have is in the form of coatings. Both my firing pins are SS with a gold colored titanium Nitride finish. I love the look of TiN and plan on coating most of my 'appointments" on the 3G for the sake of cosmetics AND function. I found an place that will do POLISHED TiN coating for very reasonable prices. But inspite of both guns not being cosmetically finished yet(are they ever?), both are 100% functional and shooting with 100% reliability. They are incredibly accurate, blazingly fast, comfortably light. I still have a ways to go for tuning still. I Do NOT want to plonck a giant, heavy brake on the end like a Titan. They act like a PENDULUM and defeat the light weight concept. So the tuning continues to get both the guns in the .22 caliber range of recoil. I am not there yet... I will be, WITH the light weight brakes i have on the barrels now. EDIT: Where do you find the Smith carriers? On forums. You can place WTB or do a google searches. I got lucky right off the bat. Dont pay more than 100usd for one. You will still HAVE to get it coated. Once coated it will have a VERY good life.MAke sure all final machining is done BFORE coating. My bore where the gas rings go needed to be enlarged first. It was too tight. Yours may be just fine. Everything eslse was perfect with my carrier. I love mine. I talked to the owner and got some inside info which I can share if anyone wants me to do so. |

The goal in a good competition Ar-15 is to own a gun that shoots the smallest groups in the least amount of time. Its not so much what the recoil "FEELS like at your shoulder", but rather what the target looks like after a short elapsed time. That is what you tune for with a low mass system. Anyone can slap a giant heavy muzzle brake on the end of your barrel and mitigate muzzle rise and recoil and help maximize your grouping X time scores. The problem lies in the weight of the brake acting like a big pendulum and ruining transition from target to target. The LESS weight on the end of your muzzle, the better. Running a rifle length gas system is ideal, but both of mine are mid length gas port locations. I have a Keis(LOVE it) infinitely adjustable gas block on my DI gun and an adjustable gas block for my AA piston set up on my 14.5 inch barrel. I cant make very fine adjustments on the piston gun, obviously.. Now this is my opinion. Is is correct: I run a reasonably light but pretty darn effective brake. I then tune this set up for maximum efficiency...ie the closest groupings in the least amount of time. Its a tricky process I am finding....getting the right combo of buffer weight, spring size,, and gas setting on you adjustable gas block.. And IS there an ideal bolt carrier weight?? That is my question. Also: Buffer weights? I use the whole assembly of the JP captured spring mechanism(CSM) when paired with my JP lighr carrier. But I remove the Circlps and SS weight barrels from it when paired with my 3.5 ounce Smith carrier. Same deal for the conventional buffers. I use the standard carbine buffer for the JP light carrier and I remove all the internal weights for pairing the buffer with the Smith carrrier. I am still experimenting with buffer weight and spring tension. I am open to suggestions for best focus to take here. |

I was trying to go with a lighter gun but realized during this testing why everyone runs those heavy ass PRS stocks. Weight mitigates sight movement. The gun feels lethargic in your hands when you pick it up and it's heavy but we are only holding the gun for 20-60 seconds. Furthermore running with a 10 lb gun vs a 5 lb gun really doesn't matter either. |

For me, transitions are not slower, and a medium weight rifle (about 10# w/ a scope) is much easier to shoot at anything over 100 yards, either supported or not. |

Just wondering if I am wrong. I look at the bolt, carrier and buffer as one weight. Starting to go really light on my buffers now. My 4.5 pound 6.8 SPC is now using a 2.05 ounce buffer with all aluminum plugs, but when the buffer is empty it only weighs 0.8 ounces. I am using the JP LMOS carrier.
I figure taking 2 ounces out of the buffer is the same as taking out 2 ounces out of the carrier? |

Jesse- Did you ever get a Rubber City or Voodoo bolt carrier to weigh? I see you are running the BOOMFABs...they sound sweet. What's the next best thing(lightest) for the poorer shooters out here? Thanks, JSflyer Negative. As far as I know nothing in steel is as light as the JP so I didn't bother. As far as my money goes Boomfab in the match guns and JP in the fun guns. |

A lighter BC makes recoil go away?
Not sure I would buy anything from a gun manufacturer with no understanding of physics of the operation of guns. Spoken like one who has never shot a tuned 3 gun rifle with lightened reciprocating mass and a good comp. My first dedicated 3-gun rifle was a Tac-Irons build with JP parts where it counted... Then I wanted to dabble in Optics so I tried a 'budget build' with a good barrel but standard components elsewhere. Shot it once and went inside to order adj gas and another LMOS carrier. I will eventually try a Titane but there are other things I need to upgrade first. Now I am hearing rumors about a new and improved JP aluminum carrier coming back out............ |

I just tested the Boomfab and it required the least amount of gas of all the configurations tested. The Boomfab + JPSCS is the lowest. This was using our match grade fluted 16" Rifle gas barrel. You can see the results at this link: http://micromoa.com/?page_id=1190 |
