I live in Southern Michigan where only certain rifles are allowed for hunting deer.

What's a good caliber to consider?

Can you only use them during shotgun season?

Yes, only during regular firearm season.

I was out at Bald Mountain yesterday. Hit a spike horn with a 334 Rainer HP out of a .50 Beowulf yesterday at 5pm. I've never seen anything drop so hard or so fast. These new cartridge restrictions (or non-restrictions) are the fucking cat's pajamas!

In a nutshell, .35 caliber or larger, case length between 1.2 and 1.8 inches, straight walled cartridges only. Allows your common revolver chamberings like .44 and .357 mag, and also big bore ARs like the .50BW and the .450BM.

...Now get off your computer and go kill something.

What do you think about, let's say, a .44 magnum lever action? Like these two below?

Without getting into something somewhat specialized like .50 Beowulf, the .44 Mag. is one of the best choices there is.   I'd prefer the Marlin but either one is good.

Absolutely zero wrong with a .44 mag lever gun, and I would definitely opt for the Marlin out of the two.

I've decided to go with the Rossi 92 .44 mag - does anyone have ammunition suggestions for plinking / hunting?

What's the effective range of .44mag for whitetail?

Yep; I knew a guy who had killed a handful of deer with an Encore rifle in 44Mag at about 200yds. Me, I'm done at 150

IMO, it would be 150.  I'm sure people have/can go longer, but that's where I'd stay.

Thats good sound advice.  i will shoot to 200 with my 444 which has a good bit on the 44 mag 150 is likely the max I would shoot with a 44.
