What happened to the end of the deer's nose????

Possum ate it!

I got him as the sun was almost setting. I was standing on the ground just in the woodline, using the trees for cover next to a field. He came walking toward me about ten yards from the edge of the woods, looking at the does I was watching in the field. As soon as I caught sight of him out of the corner of my eye I drew back and waited, he walked right in front of me and I let him have it! Twelve Yards! I knew he was hit good from the sound of air gurgling out his sides as he ran out of sight over the rise across the bean field next to the woods I was hunting in. I waited half an hour, so as not to spook him if he wasnt quite dead. I have been told the LAST thing ya ever want to do is spook a bled out deer, cause he will run another 150 yards without bleeding and you will never see him again. It got darker and darker while I looked for the blood trail, the dirt was bare in the freshly picked field. I had a maglight and I walked back and forth for almost two hours, not one spot of blood! I looked and looked before deciding to wait till the sun comes up so I could find this monster. First thing in the morning I was in that field waiting for the sun, walking back and forth over the part of the field I know he ran through. Finally, just at first light I found a few spots of blood! I had been walking back and forth over the blood trail in the dark. I did not know blood did not show up well on dirt in the dark, there is a tip for you right there. I followed it over the rise down into the brush on the other side of the field where he took a right turn and ran another thirty yards to dirt road, he slipped and fell on the hard dirt road, made it through the ditch on the edge of the road, where the arrow was laying, and fell about ten feet further into the tall grass. I drove by him twice! On my way home and on the way back the next morning! Must have been a possum or a coyote got to his nose. It was in the thirties temperature wise that night, so I knew he would not spoil, but no one ever told me that when you get there the next morning, their nose will be ate off. The taxidermist said he has seen that happen several times, always the same too, got dark before they find blood and they find the deer the next morning with no nose. I never knew critters would eat the nose like that, or I would have kept looking in the dark. I knew it was going to be cold that night and I knew I was gonna be there before first light, but going home with a deer in the field was the most difficult decision I can recall. For no more than I slept I should have just stayed and walked around that field. The taxidermist is gonna fix it. When I drug him into the cooler at the meat processor, he was the biggest.

While not an AR kill it is my son's first and second kills. He's six years old and did all the shooting unassisted, with a Rem. 600 in 6mm. Next year he will be sporting a 6.8 or 6mm AR.

Try a two mantle gas Coleman lantern for blood trailing at night. Works a lot better than a flashlight or headlamp.

I'm 27 years old, and this fall I shot my first deer. A 12 point buck...

This is after we dragged it a long distance out of the woods...

This is after we got it home on the roof...

On the drive home I got many varied responses from other drivers... Liberal Twin Cities hippies flipping us off , or usually frowning at us or giving us scornful looks. And several honking, waving, giving thumbs up... Even a county Sheriff deputy that passed us gave us a thumbs up and a big smile...

I shot it with my K-31 Swiss Rifle...

That was my first deer, and it was a VERY memorable hunt... Most of my family & friends told me to just stop hunting now... I'll probably never be able to top that. 'Just give up now...' they all said.

One of the guys that had hunted there for 20+ years knew it was my first time, and he said, "Congratulations" and as he shook my hand he mashed my knuckles together really hard trying to crush my hand... Trying to congratulate me with a slight look of masked contempt.

Nephew's first deer - was a proud uncle.

Ok it's not an Ar but I have killed many with my AR's. My first time in the woods with a bow, god was good to me.

If that isn't reason enough to bow hunt again, I don't know what is.

Great job

You should get him scored, it looks like a Pope and Young deer.
