It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men's hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air, that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.

Alaska takes forever to see. I would plan on a 2-3 week road trip to see the bulk of the road system. Even as a resident I’ve wanted to do a SE Alaska cruise also. |

Awesome pics, Derek. Every once in a while, my wife says she'd like to get a good camera and telephoto lens and learn how to use them. Living in the country, we're always seeing something to get pics of.

Since we have a good thread rolling here with many activators.
Can we discuss what antennas everyone is using? I have been using a linked dipole or EFHW. I like the EFHW but it seems kind of frail due to the exposed design (QRP GUYS). Anyone running a a more robust EFHW? And also what is your favorite field antenna setup and why? |

I use a custom made transformer inside a 3D printed box. Packs down small and light enough, and has worked extremely well for me. If that's not available, I use a self-supporting loaded vertical ground plane made with an MFJ-1979 17-ft. whip, home built coil, and wire or tape-measure radials. Attached File |

View Quote With my FT-891 (no tuner) I’ve been using a Wolf River Coil with their collapsible whip and the Super Antenna spike mount and 8 radials or the Tim Ortiz eBay 20/40 linked dipole. If I have my FT-450D with tuner I’ll often use an end fed. I’m trying to figure out a resonant end fed that I can use without a tuner with the FT-891. I mostly do 20m since it’s always daylight here, so I just ordered a 20’ JackLite fiberglass pole and am going to make a 20m vertical. I bought a DXCommander, but haven’t built it yet. |

I too dont run a tuner and want resonate antennas. After setting up now about 15 times in the field I have learned that EFHW seems to be the easiest and most forgiving to deploy. Just wish we had more 49:1 match box systems available. Just dont have the time to do a complete homebrew right now. I also run a 31' push up pole from jackite. The whole throwing a line in a tree is for the birds. lol |

If it starts to mist or rain I have to pack up. |

Did an activation in Florida while on vacation. Just did a quick 10 at Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou SP. 20m was in rough shape too, so it took some work. I may go try one more in the morning. Just get a quick 10.

dumb question about PARK TO PARK
A few nights ago, i get home from work and the wife wants to go eagle spotting we end up at a park, and i fire up the TS480HX mobile and hear a POTA station. I call — “ PARK TO PARK” he answers and we exchange K-park numbers and signal report we head home to cook supper, i never did an activation, and only worked one station. will this show up as a park to park, or do i have to submit one QSO as a failed activation? . |

I sincerely hope that you get him, as I know you need Alaska. You guys may have to work something out so that you can avoid the pile-up.

As far as pile ups go, y'all do what you want. It's your activation after all. I found out pretty quick that if you don't manage the jackasses then everyone else starts doing it too.
It all begins with when they start calling in my opinion. I keep that under control and I don't have to worry about the rest of it. My biggest pet peeve is when I finish a QSO and they're all already calling again without my prompting. Ignoring also works. If they can't wait their turn and keep blabbering I just keep on ignoring. The bigger the station the better this tactic works. Last tactic is to answer and not log. A couple times of that and an email exchange of why I won't log them, they get right pretty damn quick. There are a who's who of POTA hunters in both the nice folks and the jackasses. There are a few who I won't even answer their call anymore cause of their BS. |

I was trying to work a special even station a few months ago
the op was a female new yorker she started working the numbers “ 5 landers only, QRZed” some 6 lander kept calling she says in her Carrie Heffernan voice — “ W6 i hear you, i will not acknowledge you, nor will i work you!” The King of Queens - Carrie Yells at Mold Company [CLIP] |
