I saw you on the POTA spotter, but you were down in my noise level.

I've been all over the southeast, midwest, southwest, but need to see Alaska, that looks amazing.

Here's some pics my wife and I took at some of our local POTA spots... ( many of these are from her phone )

these little bastards were right by a picnic area, expecting us to toss them some snacks. she shot them with a Nikon D3300.

Very nice, those are some great shots and beautiful scenery. Alaska takes forever to see. I would plan on a 2-3 week road trip to see the bulk of the road system. Even as a resident I’ve wanted to do a SE Alaska cruise also.

Awesome pics, Derek. Every once in a while, my wife  says she'd like to get a good camera and telephoto lens and learn how to use them. Living in the country, we're always seeing something to get pics of.

Since we have a good thread rolling here with many activators.

Can we discuss what antennas everyone is using?

I have been using a linked dipole or EFHW.

I like the EFHW but it seems kind of frail due to the exposed design (QRP GUYS). Anyone running a a more robust EFHW?

And also what is your favorite field antenna setup and why?

My radio lacks a tuner, and it's one less thing to carry so I prefer resonant or "tunable" antennas.

Current go-to is a home built trapped/loaded-EFHW.  I took design cues from the "shorty-80" design and one K6ARK built with traps to add in 30M where it's not a native harmonic.  I use a custom made transformer inside a 3D printed box.  Packs down small and light enough, and has worked extremely well for me.

Attachment Attached File

This requires the use of a tall branch I can launch a line over with my slingshot/reel combo.  If that's not available, I use a self-supporting loaded vertical ground plane made with an MFJ-1979 17-ft. whip, home built coil, and wire or tape-measure radials.

I used a ZS6BKW with my FT818 on Field day 2020, it's big but works very well.

I also built a 20m dipole, but haven't used it yet.

I'm still piecing together my portable station. waiting on more anderson power poles, and I need a bioenno to replace my gel-cell

.
.

We've been doing it the lazy mobile way, in the vehicle with air conditioning, instead of mosquitoes

200 watts of TS480HX makes some pile-ups.

.
.
.
I cut 15' and 29' of wire yesterday, soldered a ring terminal on one end, and an insulator on the other, on each.

I plan on using them to replace the 3' whip on the TARHEEL II, by slinging them up in a tree.

.
.
I've also thought about slingshotting the ZS6BKW into a few trees and running it to a MFJ-945 and TS480HX mobile.

With my FT-891 (no tuner) I’ve been using a Wolf River Coil with their collapsible whip and the Super Antenna spike mount and 8 radials or the Tim Ortiz eBay 20/40 linked dipole. If I have my FT-450D with tuner I’ll often use an end fed. I’m trying to figure out a resonant end fed that I can use without a tuner with the FT-891. I mostly do 20m since it’s always daylight here, so I just ordered a 20’ JackLite fiberglass pole and am going to make a 20m vertical. I bought a DXCommander, but haven’t built it yet.

Like the homebrew EFHW very smart.

I too dont run a tuner and want resonate antennas. After setting up now about 15 times in the field I have learned that EFHW seems to be the easiest and most forgiving to deploy.

Just wish we had more 49:1 match box systems available. Just dont have the time to do a complete homebrew right now.

I also run a 31' push up pole from jackite. The whole throwing a line in a tree is for the birds. lol

The QRP guys no tune EFHW works and what I use and has the lengths printed on the side which gets you in the ballpark. I just hate its open design. If it starts to mist or rain I have to pack up.

They're bulkier and heavier than a spool of wire, but man are they super practical to use.  Already marked for length so you can put them out at about 16' for 20-meters or the full 30' for 40-meters and so on depending on the band.  They're heavy enough with the housing on the end that you just set them down and don't need stakes or tie-outs.  And the hi-vis yellow color helps present less of a trip hazard.  I just sanded a little spot of paint off the end and easily soldered a few inches of jumper wire to them with a bullet connector to plug into ground sockets on the stand.  Cheap too, like $4 each at Harbor Freight.

I got an activation with about 25 contacts before I got rained out. Should’ve brought a shelter.

Did an activation in Florida while on vacation. Just did a quick 10 at Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou SP. 20m was in rough shape too, so it took some work. I may go try one more in the morning. Just get a quick 10.

dumb question about PARK TO PARK

A few nights ago, i get home from work and the wife wants to go eagle spotting

we end up at a park, and i fire up the TS480HX mobile and hear a POTA station.

I call — “ PARK TO PARK”

he answers and we exchange K-park numbers and signal report

we head home to cook supper, i never did an activation, and only worked one station.

will this show up as a park to park, or do i have to submit one QSO as a failed activation?

.

Both stations have to submit for it to count. You'll still get credit for everything even if it's considered failed.

Man it’s really hard to manage the pileups. I’m outside, windy, waves are loud trying to manage the phone, mic pen and paper and pull the weak stations. I think I’m getting better though.

I will do an ARFCOM only POTA for you guys. Let me know know when works for you and I’ll go set up at the beach and not post it spot.

Propagation must have been good today, got 2 pileups at 3 parks and logged about 150. It was hard to find an open freq and when I did eventually got crowded in on.

I was at home hunting last night, and was amazed at the giant POTA pile-ups

Alaska and Hawaii tend to get pile-ups, but last night even common Virginia and South Carolina had massive ones.

.
.
when I activate, and the pile-up becomes a swarm of bees, it reminds me to ....

"Any Park to Park, QRzed ?"

followed by

"Any mobile stations, QRZed ?

"Any QRP..."

I usually ask the mobiles and QRP about there station.

"a 7300 into a G5RV"

"are you mobile, sir ?"

"....er...no"

"MOBILES ONLY, QRZed"

That would be awesome. The times you've been on are good. Propagation just hasn't worked in my favor yet.

As far as pile ups go, y'all do what you want. It's your activation after all. I found out pretty quick that if you don't manage the jackasses then everyone else starts doing it too.

It all begins with when they start calling in my opinion. I keep that under control and I don't have to worry about the rest of it. My biggest pet peeve is when I finish a QSO and they're all already calling again without my prompting.

Ignoring also works. If they can't wait their turn and keep blabbering I just keep on ignoring. The bigger the station the better this tactic works.

Last tactic is to answer and not log. A couple times of that and an email exchange of why I won't log them, they get right pretty damn quick.

There are a who's who of POTA hunters in both the nice folks and the jackasses. There are a few who I won't even answer their call anymore cause of their BS.

I was trying to work a special even station a few months ago

the op was a female new yorker

she started working the numbers

“ 5 landers only, QRZed”

some 6 lander kept calling

she says in her Carrie Heffernan voice —

“ W6 i hear you, i will not acknowledge you, nor will i work you!”
