That's what deets for.

Dude look at my last screen cap.  7am and 78f...
I had to jog the first 100 yards faster than normal to out run literally the yellow/deer flies.
They are worse than mosquitoes at times. Lol .

Rained again last night. So no walk for me. I may go anyway rain or not before my call rotation.

Speaking of bugs, my hike Saturday was probably the second shittiest hike I have ever been on (I broke my foot on one hike so that will take first). It was in a pretty nice place I have hiked probably a half dozen times but this time there were literally tens of millions of gnats and small biting flies. It was so bad I had to keep my head down facing the ground because if I looked forward the bugs got in my eyes. They kept trying to crawl in my nose, ears, mouth and underneath my hat to get in my hair. I was covered in both deet and permethrin. I finally happened to find an old hood that detached from one of my winter coats in the bottom of my pack. I tied that tight around my head and that solved the problem. I probably looked ridiculous though.

9.17 miles. This was part of the area that was affected by the fire last year.

Did a piece of the AT on Saturday that went from the Rock Spring Cabin parking area to the Horse Stables at Skyland in Shenandoah. Took a couple of parallel side trails on the way to and from to mix things up. One of these went to the top of Hawksbill which is the highest point in Shenandoah. 9.69 miles.

I've been pretty much doing this hike 2 times a week fer most of the year, some weeks I dont get around to it....  Seemed pretty boring to report it over and over...

Along with daily runs and some day hikes we are gearing up for a couple day and over nighters over the next two weeks while in Washington.

WAR CREEK

CHELAN SUMMIT

These are planned hikes, we might change plans who knows...

Haven't hiked any since around May.  It's currently 90-something and about 80% humidity.  Actually that's down from this morning when it was 90% humidity.

I'm going to resume in the Fall, lol.

Between the heat and the rain we've been getting lately, I haven't been able to go as often as I would like.

I decided it was time to adapt.

Too hot or raining during the day? Time to hike at night.

Went from Rockfish Gap on Afton to the top of Bear Den Mountain where there are 5 or so communications towers. It was a nice night; low 60s and a breeze. Moon was out for the first half of the hike so that wasn't too bad. It was very dark for the second half so we went a little slower even with the nods. Other than one deer, we saw no animals but did see some bioluminescent fungus. We got back to the truck at about 1:45am. 10 miles even.

Pictures are all from the top of Bear Den. They all suck but thats what you get from taking phone pictures through a PVS-14.

You should look into it. It's really not as cost prohibitive as people on this site will make it out to be. By assembling the nods yourself and using blemished tubes you should be able to stay below $1200-1300 on a PVS-14. It does take a fair amount of research as well as patience and persistence to find the parts and not get burned on them. A PVS-7 can be built even cheaper (I built mine for $850) but I would strongly advise against the PVS-7 for hiking purposes (you have no depth perception with PVS-7, which can, for obvious reasons, be bad).

No one else hikes in the summer?

This past Saturday I did a piece of the AT from Beagle Gap north to a spur trail to Turk's Head Mountain and back again. 14.59 miles

I thought I took pictures at Turk's Head but apparently I forgot. I met an Austrian hiker on the return leg and hiked with him for about 5 miles. He had been in Shenandoah a week hiking on the AT.

This is a picture from the top of Calf Mountain. You can see the comm towers that I took pictures of during my night hike on top of Bear Den Mountain in the background.

Gorgeous.  Still pretty buggy here and miserable, although temps got down to the 50's the other night.  Today it's back to 87.

I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm through for the year.  Not by my own fault.  While coaching cross country I have either torn, stressed, or otherwise damaged my achiles tendon.  I thought it would go away, but here we are 6 weeks later and every step feels like a knife digging into the back of my heel.  I could attempt hiking, and would more than likely manage with the pain as I have been, but if it finally gave out and tore on me 5mi up the mountain somewhere, let's just say it wouldn't be a responsible thing to do.

I am at 244.13 for the year so far. I've split the last month or so between hikes on Massanutten and hikes in Shenandoah. Somehow I had never been on Massanutten before and kind of regret not going sooner. It's a bit different from the Blue Ridge: creeks everywhere, fewer people, and less dense forest.

8-19-17: Signal Knob - I pretty much followed the route on hiking upward . I thought this was an overrated hike. Hiking Upward has it in their top 5 for the state. Had a good view of Strasburg from Signal Knob though. - 10.28 miles

8-26-17: Strickler Knob - I sort of followed the hiking upward route on this one but instead of doubling back, I took the road back and then took a little side trail to another view point back near the truck. Strickler Knob itself is, IMO, the single best view in the entire northern part of Virginia. - 12.32 miles.

9-3-17: Massanutten Hike - I went off of a map for this one - I don't have it in front of me and I don't recall the trail names. Ended up doing a crazy bushwack on this hike that went off what was basically a cliff and a rock slide. - 9.14 miles.

9-9-17: Big Meadows and other areas in Shenandoah NP. I went down a bunch of small connected trails to make a big loop around the general Big Meadows areas - 10.54 miles

9-16-17: AT in Shenandoah from Ivy Creek Overlook to south of Loft Mountain Camp Ground. - 10.13 miles

Total Mileage YTD: 244.13

If all goes according to plan, I should have a Colorado 14er or two by the end of next week.

Hey thanks for asking.  I've been having good days and bad days.  I've been trying to work it out as much as possible, and have had some success, but then I'll have a day where I wake up and can barely walk.  I think it has something to do with the way my foot is positioned throughout the night while sleeping or during the day.  I'm going to experiment with a brace or something to keep it stretched.  Either way, it's one of those injuries where it's not important enough to go to the doctor, yet has the potential to be really bad.

I think I'm going to try to do some short hikes as soon as work slows down.  Thanks again for asking.

Evidence based medicine shows that stretching for 30 minutes a day and using a night splint can help Achilles tendinitis.  Most comfy night splint on the market is below. If that doesn't work, PM me. I have a couple friends in Tennessee that are foot and ankle docs.

Amazon Product
  • Toe strap dorsiflexes the 1st mpj to provide a specific and sustained stretch to the plantar fascia and a sustained low load stretch to the flexor tendons, Achilles tendon and calf muscles.
  • Loading the windlass mechanism naturally brings the foot/ankle to a near 90 degree angle thus eliminating the "lever effect" and the resulting pressure on the apex of the ankle.
  • Elastic connector ring allows for natural flexion of the foot and toes during sleep, returning to the dorsiflexed position when muscles relax.

So, how did everyone do for 2017?

I'm disappointed to report that, due to an ankle injury that's been plaguing me since August, I didn't hit my 100mi goal like I wanted.  The good news is that I seem to be getting better and will start a new thread for 2018.  I think my total for the year was 64mi hiked.  Nothing compared to many of you.  I appreciate keeping this thread alive and frankly, it's about the only thing that keeps me coming back here nowadays.  It's been one of the most positive threads in the forum that I've seen.

I didn't make my goal this year due to injury, although I had time to do so in the summer before I got hurt but got too busy and I hate mosquitoes.  The point is, no worries if you don't make it! We are just trying to live vicariously through other people's hikes.

My son is getting ready to enlist in the Army.

So I'm helping him get in shape and me too.

We haven't hiked since first part of last year on a camping trip.
We did 1 6 miler first day and a 12 miler the second.

This is our first this year.

My pack had a 10lbs gravel; bag in it plus water.
He had a 15lb bag of gravel.

I made up several bags of different weights a few years ago but only 1 size each.
He's younger and enlisting so he got the 15 pounder.

When I was going to try and re-enlist back in 90 I would load my pack with sand bags and I had a curl bar I put weights on the simulate the weight of an M16.

Letting my son use the very same bar.

Went on another hike Saturday.

Only went 5 miles.
The wife said she'd go with us to keep us out of trouble.

I felt bad so I added another 5lbs to my ruck to equal his. Plus water for both my wife and me.

Son's feet still got a few blisters but hopefully they'll toughen up soon.
The ample supply of rocks around this part of the state probably doesn't help that either.

We were going to another one today, but since his feet are tore up a bit we're going to wait until his days off to do another one.

QUESTION::

I'm not sure how these pic's are loading on here.
They look a little large to me.

I have a new cell and not sure how resize them on there.

If they appear to large or causing it slow to download let me know and I'll try to resize them if I can.

I thought I remember seeing another thread about this and looked for it.
Couldn't remember the forum it was in.
Looked in this one also but I missed it.
