When encryption is enabled are SMS and GPS position transmissions encrypted, or just voice?

I will say it is nice to see more HTs that are IP67 with USB-C charging. Makes it much easier to recharge in the field without having to lug around a bunch of spare batteries or a weird charger base. |

That’s pretty cool. Surprised the gov allowed them to import this. Heck I’m surprised China allowed them to make it

Heck I’m surprised China allowed them to make it View Quote Pretty much any MOTOTRBO-compliant radio allows for AES encryption. And there's a lot of them that have been imported. This isn't the first, and definitely not the last. DMR allows encryption because the standard supports it, and I believe there are police in Europe who use it as their digital trunked solution (like our public safety does with P25). Tier III DMR is comparable to P25 systems in function. |

What's interesting is that I'm seeing some incompatibility between radios when it comes to encryption (just in what I'm reading).

Typical DMR is RC4 only which is a joke for encryption, it's easily crackable (and has been for a while). Some use AES, mostly those that use the MOTOTRBO standard. Those that use the same standard, though, should have no issues talking to each other over encrypted channels. |

The TYT UV390+ having SMS encryption is sure handy, but it doesn't look as durable as the HD2. There's virtually no one that could use that in an attack since it would require knowing who is behind a particular IP (and that's basically impossible since 99.9999% of home connections are essentially DHCP, and if you're doing mobile now you throw NAT into that mix as well) and I sincerely doubt they store that information beyond transactional purposes, ie what's needed to serve it to you. Anywhere that's important for a TLA to monitor they've already got a backdoor into or an agreement with the service operator. This isn't one they care about. |
