My latest email from Cavalier states that 3 boxes of slug would be needed for the Shotgun match. I wonder how many brave people we'll get for the shotgun match.
I'm looking forward to this match and seeing everyone out there. |
I had a good time today and it was great to see everyone from ARFCOM who made it out. Now I just have to wait and see how I did.

The match went off great, the weather held out for the most part and I'm pretty sure everyone survived the shotgun side match .
It was great to see all the AR15.com crew out having fun! Tim they put me down as 1st MM on the CDP results but I'm not classified yet and hope to do better than MM
Don't complain too loudly......it means you get to shoot for free at the next match!
Hope you and 9x19 had a good time, it was great seeing you there. |
You got me this time Tim. Congrats! I guess I need to do some practice. I'm already looking forward to the next one.
It was great fun, free is always GOOD! Bonnie loved it, now she knows why I like IDPA so much. Well hopefully I can make the next one, I don't know how fast they'll take to get the surgery their going to do (I'll be in the Hospital a few days and in a neck brace 6 weeks ). I'm shooting in the classifier at Black Creek on the 12th, going to do CDP and SSP. |
Just wanted to mention two other matches that are held in the Central VA area......
Black Creek holds a great match on the second Saturday of every month, and Rivanna in Charlottesville holds one on the 3rd. Saturday of the month. Both are very well run and a blast to shoot. |
Templar,
How many rounds will be needed for the carbine side match this month? I have 3 other people that are going to use my M4gery so I need to know so I bring enough ammo. I'll bring my FAL too. TIA |
I'm still working on the details, but they should be just fine with two magazines of 20 rounds each....you shouldn't neet more than 40 rounds....and there is a possibility of a handgun component also (transition).
Looking forward to seeing you guys again! |
Sounds fun but I think such an event would be frowned upon on my leave.
Koga!!!! When are you due back man?
For those of you who don't know, Koga Shuko is serving our country in the VA Army National Guard and is in Mosul. I totally understand spending some time with your wife. If you can though, let me know if we can hook up while you're home for a bit so we can catch up. |

Will be leaving today. But dont know how long it will take to get back.

Ok, here are the results from today, Sunday June 27, 2004. I had a great time putting on the rifle side match, and we had a lot of shooters. I've got a hell of a sunburn cookin' right now, but it was worth it.
Thanks to all those who came out and to everyone who helped run the matches today. My apologies to gotm4 and 9x19 for breaking down the Rifle Side Match, we had thought everyone was done shooting rifles for the day. Next month we're having a shotgun side match. Not too bad, came in 11th in SSP (Beretta 92 Elite) and 3rd in CDP (Ernest Langdon 220ST). I think my 92 Elite needs a new slide stop, its not locking back after the mag is empty (it did that to me at the range too) on Saturday a few times and costed my 3 seconds on the SSP 3rd stage when in went forward empty and I had to rack the slide to chamber and round when I thought there was already one in there.
No, I certainly wouldn't say too shaby at all! Glad you guys could make it down from NOVA.
You all missed VAgunnut by about an hour I think. The second Saturday, the day of the Richmond show at the Showplace, Black Creek will be holding their IDPA match. |
That was a lot of fun. I am glad that I didnt lose too much from not shooting a handgun for 6 months.
I got to fire my 1911 that had word done on it and am happy with it. I also got to fire one stage with my sig before it sucked up lint that looked like a chewed up shrek 2 ticket (note to self to clean sig mags that stay in pocket.) Finally, it was nice to fire the carbine in a tactical course where the targets were not shooting back. Anyway, the sig fired great last night at the range. I can imagine that 220st langdon special mentioned earlier is fast if this little 229 fires the way it does with only part of the mods on it and half the size and weight. It was fun as always and I will be catching you all again in about 7 months. |
Koga, it was great to see you home safe. I'm sorry we couldn't hang out more at the match.
Take care of yourself man, we all appreciate what you're doing. Keep your rifle up and your head down when you get back to Mosul!! |
I still need to get in touch with you guys and start attending these IDPA shoots. They sound like a blast and damn good training.
Every Monday night there is a small indoor match at Dominion Shooting Range here in Richmond.
The match coming up next week is at Rivanna in Charlottesville, and the last Sunday of the month we'll have a match at Cavalier with a Tactical Shotgun side match with 00 Buckshot and maybe a couple of slugs. Hope to see you out there!! |
Just wanted to remind people that the last Sunday of the month is on
the 25th, so this month we had a match every week...how cool is that? The Shotgun side match will be buckshot and maybe a couple of slugs. You shouldn't need more than 3 boxes (15 rounds) of 00 Buck and no more than 4 slugs. The course of fire will be fairly straight forward, and we've figured out a way to use buckshot without blowing all the pasters off, so it should run much more smoothly than the January buckshot match and won't take long to run through. Everyone will need to use 00 Buck, but you can use the low recoil "Tactical" 9 pellet, the standard 9 pellet, 12 pellet magnum, or even 15 pellet 3" magnum if you wish. You will only be scored for the best 9 pellets on the target. Everyone will use 00 buck for uniformity. The pump guys will be shooting against the other pump guys, the auto loaders against the other auto loaders, and the guys with optics on their auto loaders will be scored against each other. You can use the shotgun "speed loaders" if you wish. Unfortunately, I don't know of any commercial 20 ga. 00 buck loads, so it's 12 ga. and up. See you all there! Tim |
I still need to get in touch with you guys and start attending these matches.
A map to Cavalier can be found at the Yahoo VA IDPA Group, sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/VAIDPA/
It would be great to have you come on out Dinger! |
I have been looking at the perfect thing for those side matches when I get back. I have been looking at the 6.8rem spc and it would seem pretty simple to setup an AR with that. I would get the desired bigger hole in the target and better performance with those traps with plastic Templar likes to setup. Only thing I got to do is wait for them to start mass producing the ammo to the public oh yeh and get out of iraq.
Guys (and gals!), this month's side match at Cavalier's IDPA match
will be rifle. I'm going to break up the divisions like I did last time, with a Rifle class (anyone shooting 7.62x51mm {.308 Win}, .30-06, 8mm Mauser, etc.), a Carbine class (7.62x39mm, 5.56x45mm {.223}, .30 Carbine, 5.45x39mm) and a Pistol Carbine class (any carbine chambered in 9mm, .45ACP, and .40). If anyone brings a bolt action or lever action out, they will be lumped into a "Manually Operated" catagory. I'd encourage anyone with an old military rifle to bring it on out. The Garand guys should shine at the steel distance stage. You may use optics if you like. We will have the use of the 300 yard range and the course of fire will include both some up close and personal CQB type stuff and also some steel targets at extended range (around 100 yards or so, maybe a wee bit more). Bring AT LEAST 40 rounds of ammo for the rifle side match. Hopefully this last Rifle Side Match of the year will be a good one. Thanks and hope to see you guys out there. Tim |
Well, the match was hot, but I had a great time, and I think the course of fire for the rifle side match was fairly challenging and realistic. The IDPA match was a good mix of up close and personal and also distance.
Here is the Rifle Side Match results from Sunday, August 29, 2004. groups.yahoo.com/group/VAIDPA/files/Cavalier%20Rifle%208-29-04.doc And the IDPA match: groups.yahoo.com/group/VAIDPA/files/Cavalier%2008-29-04.htm |
BlackScot kicked more than a lil ass with the Arsenal Inc. SA-M7S that I loaned him, especially considering he'd never even shot an AK before, let alone in competition!
Anthony, yes, there is a Classifier match at Cavalier this Sunday, the 26th, and next month Rivanna in Charlottesville will have their Classifier.
The VA Commonwealth Cups IDPA Championship will be held at Cavalier in October, if you're interested email T. White at [email protected] and he'll get you a slot. Guys, don't be intimidated by the idea of shooting the Commonwealth Cups, it's just a big match and people are only competeing against other shooters in their classification and division. Novice and Marksman are welcome!! |
Hey, at the Cavalier classifier I just moved from Marksman to Sharpshooter in ESP..... by a very, very wide (ahem, 3-second) margin..... (but anyway) using my CZ75B which I'm gonna bring to the Cups and kick some butt !!! .......probably my own So, y'all come on out and see yahoo's like me totally humiliate themselves. We'll be EZ-2-beet !!! |
Congrats! I was hoping to make master this time, but still didn't get it. I made a couple of mistakes it cost me big time. At least I still kept expert. |
Isn't it true that in IDPA you're never moved down in classification? Despite how you might do in any number of later classifiers? Not sure I ever understood the thinking on that..... Anyway, glad I made my goal of getting ESP-SS (even if only by 3 seconds) in time for the Cups. I'll be a lot smaller fish in a somewhat larger bowl. |
As I understand the Rule Book, NO, no light rail 1911 is legal, as it adds weight to the dust cover.
This only covers 1911's in .45 ACP, those shooting Custom Defensive. This from the Latest Rule Book: "NON-INCLUSIVE list of EXCLUDED modifications: · Heavy barrels, cone barrels (over 4.2”) and/or barrel sleeves (factory or aftermarket) · Porting of barrels · Compensators · Add-on weights, weighted magazines, tungsten guide rods, extended dust covers · Sights of non-standard notch and post configuration · Extended oversize magazine release buttons · Trigger shoes " So....there ya go. |
Dam that sucks. Looks like I should have ordered a non-light railed CQB. |
I believe this month is the Commonwealth Games. |
You should be able to still shoot it in another division. |
Um, it's my understanding that no light rail 1911 with a barrel over 4.2" is legal, period, in any division.
I could be wrong though, it's been known to happen once or twice. The side matches are done for this year. This month is the VA Commonwealth Cups, the IDPA championship for Va. All the slots are filled, so unfortunately there won't be any walk ups allowed. November we have our big 3 Gun Match, "Rolling Thunder", and no matches in December. Shotgun side match should be next up in January, with a Rifle Side Match in Feb. |
From reading the rules it's hard to tell. I don't see anything in the CDP guidelines that state no light railed pistols. The only thing that I see is that no pistol with a cone shaped barrel over 4.2" is legal. Does the CQB have a cone shaped barrel? I wouldn't consider the light rail to be an extended dust shield or a weighted one, so it's hard to tell. Maybe a call into IDPA is necessary. |
A call probably will be necessary. I consider the light rails to be extended, weighted dust covers....pick up a Kimber TLE II with rail and a standard TLE II and you will immediately feel the difference in weight.
I think that this is one of the things that they are addressing with the new rule book that is long overdue. I personally don't think that it should be a problem to use the light railed 1911's, but the guys that started IDPA were so intent on it not turning into IPSC with the special weighted "race gun" 1911's, that they eliminated a whole lot of guns without meaning too. All the new Glocks and a lot of Berettas and SIGs have light rails, but on these guns, they don't extend the dustcover any and they don't add a whole lot of weight (except for the stainless SIG's, but a lot of that is because they are using stainless steel frames rather than aluminum). I'm certainly not the final word on this, but I will tell you that if you showed up with a light railed 1911 at a local match, it probably wouldn't be much of an issue, but at a major regional match, it would be. |
I'm just going to go ahead and give the IDPA a call tomorrow. Thanks for all your help. |
I called the IDPA and was told Joyce had just got out of the hospital and to call back on Monday. I also called Wilson Combat directly. I was told the Wilson CQB w/light rail is too heavy for both the SSP (Stock Service Pistol Division) and CDP (Custom Defensive Pistol Division). The weight limit is 41 oz. with an unloaded mag installed in the pistol for CDP. Wilson told me one trick to make the CQB legal is to remove the extended mag well for competition in the CDP class. This removes just enough weight to keep the pistol legal and is no big deal. IDPA divisions and rules are very new to me and at the moment I'm very confused. I'm going to call the IDPA back Monday as instructed to get this straight. |
You could probably remove some metal from the frame under the grips too. |
The last time I shot a match up at Cavalier was 10+ years ago.
Did they change matches from IPSC to IDPA? What holster rigs are currently allowable? Are you still allowed to use the other ranges after the match? thanks packratt |
