S&W M&P Shield is probably the best bang for the buck, as well as lowest recoil of any of the slightly thinner options mentioned. The new Glock 43 is probably going to shoot similarly, but cost $100 more. Springfield Armory has one that is supposed to shoot the same, but price-wise is also more costly. If you want the thinnest and/or lightest though, and don't care about price or recoil, then you can rule here out. These are simply the most "practical" (fun to shoot, not painful) sizes IMO.

EDIT: PPS and LC9s may also fit into above category, and probably at the price point of the Shield. But I think the Shield has a better trigger than them from what I've read.

I'd wait for the Glock 43 before making a decision...or just get a Shield.

Looking for something similar, of course not exact, but not much bigger than the .380 pocket guns like the LCP.

It's actually for a friend to try. She's about 5'7", but slim, maybe 110lbs. Her hands aren't tiny though with her height and build.

She's looking at the LCP .380, but with the cost and availability of ammo, and with increased effectiveness of 9mm, I was thinking maybe that would be better if the size difference isn't too much, and the recoil isn't too much more in comparison.

My last wife and I both owned the Kel Tec P3AT pistols, and they were a but snappy, but not bad. I haven't shot any of the 9mm single stacks, and haven't shot any pocket pistols in years, except for my first wife's LCP a couple of years ago when she got her CCW.

I know this girl needs to shoot the guns, but it would be good to narrow it down before going to a range.

No pics, she ain't mine, sort of legally taken.

Is the main goal to find the slimmest 9mm, or to find a very slim one and also make sure it's a good gun?

If all you care about is slimmest, then just run the specs on all of them, and there will be a definitive winner.  If however you want slim and awesome...then it's more subjective.

Is the Kahr in 9mm significantly slimmer than the .40?

I've said it before I'll say it again, I was really surprised at how well the .40 handled the recoil.  I've fired small 9mm's and 380s that bit the hand worse.

Eh, it seems with Springfield introducing the XD Mod.2 and the 4.0" XDS, they're starting to offer more deals on the 3.3" XDS. I was greatly debating between a Shield and an XDS, and even though the Shield is only available in two calibers I don't have, I was willing to compromise since it was regularly $100-$130 cheaper locally than the XDS. However at the time I was ready to purchase, a local shop had the XDS in either caliber for $425, while the Shield was $379 at the time. Given my preference to purchase a handgun in a caliber I already shoot, it was a no brainer. I've noticed since then that a lot of local shops and even Cabela's have been in the low $400 range on XDS'.

I'd like an LCPs...but they brought out the LCP custom this year instead.  Any chance we'll see the LCP with striker fire this year, or next?

I'm not him but have fired both.  A lady friend owns a 938 I've trained her on and I've put maybe 100 rounds through it while I own a Shield and have a few hundred through it.

The 938 has a better trigger and depending on the model better sights so overall has a little higher accuracy potential as it comes from the box.  The Shield is a little bigger which means a lot more shootable for most folks.  The slightly larger grip and slide soaks up recoil and gives you a little more to hold on to.  The 938 is pretty snappy for someone who doesn't shoot much because it's so tiny.  Both gun's safeties are a little too small for easy operation but can be learned with some practice.

I put an Apex trigger kit in my Shield so eliminated the bad trigger complaint and will install night sights as soon as I decide which ones to get.  That fixes the negatives of the Shield while raising the price to the same as the P938.  I still like the Shield more for the size.  It's small enough to conceal easily but not so tiny that recoil is an issue.

This.  I had a Kahr CM9, it was great.  So slim and easy to carry.  I had big pockets and could pocket carry too.  Long but smooth trigger pull.    Really nice in the hand and easy to shoot; a dream to shoot compared to the Keltec.  The slide serrations on that model are mean though. Ouch.
