Was just in Japan a few weeks ago.  Had some whale sushi in Osaka.  It was great.

We just don't travel because of our damn dog, who's ironically a Japanese breed (Akita). She is 5 next month, so about 5 more years until we travel much again. The last time we traveled much was the 8 month period between our last Akita's passing and the current one coming home from the breeder. This time we're gonna travel our asses off even more. After that, we'll likely get another Shiba Inu (we used to have one of those too).

My daughter was in Japan for the month of April last year and sent us pics of Hachiko's statue. He was sort of the Akita national dog "hero" of Japan a hundred years ago and is still revered to this day. I think my daughter is going back again next month. Beautiful place. Would love to go, but I'm not spending a full day locked in a tin can. A flight to Maui was as much as I could muster, and that was 15 years ago.

Our kid is going to school in Kofu in Yaminashi. We were able to see Fuji from the Sakaori winery on the hill.. Also saw it from the Shinkansen going to Osaka.

When we flew out of Narita last October, we ended up getting to the airport about 3hrs before the flight.  The upside to that was, this was Customs and Immigration.  Nobody there.  Attachment Attached File

Very cool 2000GT.

Always been a dream to see one of those and an early Mazda Cosmo in real life. Never have.

I cannot understand how this country isn't a global monster economically. The sheer commerce, work ethic and positivity is astounding. Every shop for miles has people in it all day.

Talked to the house sitter. No change in my springer. Eye drops 4x daily. Been watching her go out to piss on my cams. Fucking depressing. I feel like shit trying to enjoy myself here but I owe it to my kid to be present and to be honest it's such a fantastic place it is easy to get lost in the experience. It's when I get back to the hotel I feel terrible. DL pics to my laptop and posting them here isn't a bad distraction. Thanks to anyone who is interested.

Today my fam went to Gifu with my son's friend Ao. We ate at the station at a Gyoza joint. I smashed some Champon, Chinese type ramen. We then took a bus to Gifu Castle. I saw 0 white people in Gifu. It's an older city with an aged population but I loved it. It was the seat of Oda Nobunaga and the site of his power.  Ao studied English in college and got an entry level job at a bank. She starts 4/1 so we used up some of her last days of being a layabout.

Here is a fuckton of pics of a trip to a town no one goes to as a tourist. I finally saw the aging population and a city of Japan. Everyone working in town was older than anywhere else I have visited

@ToledoXJ
Awesome!

Looks like a TA22 and a Z30 in the rear!

I had a 73 240Z and my friend had a 76 Celica liftback.

Miss the period when both could be had for cheap....

Incredible Pics, sir!

Any idea what a house in that little village would cost?  Would be an awesome place to disappear.

My son went to Yamagashi a smaller tourist town near Mt Fuji and there was a house with an actual yard with a view of Fuji. Maybe 1300 sq ft for $130k. That is high.  Some houses are very cheap and I bet one around Gifu is half that.  Houses depreciate in japan.  The land holds the value. I bet your average renovation skilled American could do amazing stuff here.

You would most probably be the only foreigner who ever lived there. Everybody in the whole county would know you are "that foreigner" and where you live.

I'm not sure that qualifies as "disappearing".

Small world OP. I’ve been in Japan since last week with family and friends. Tokyo for a few nights, Kyoto a few, Osaka right now, go back to Tokyo tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about the dog. We too have to leave a dog sitter at home.

Yesterday would have been a great day but as you saw it ended shitty.  We got dinner with our son so that was a good stopping point.

Wife woke me up and sad we needed to get up and do something since the kid was busy all day. I suggested Hiroshima but it was 5 hours of travel and it was already 10am. I suggested Kyoto or Osaka.  History or food. She picked history.  Off we went after a breakfast croquette and some meat on stick

45 min Shinkansen and we were walking through this park I knew of   Umekoji park. We finally saw Sakura.  Or plums. Or apricot. Or some pink assed trees

Pics are out of order but assume the fried stuff was 1st. Then travel/train then pink trees
