@GiggleSmith

bing

rendered model

I was thinking about the gadget you have been trying to render and if the number of sides is 32, then there's a simple solution. In terms of geometry, there are the platonic solids which include 4, 6 8, 12 and 20 sided objects which all share the characteristics of having faces which are equal (triangles etc. that have sides and angles of equal proportions). The two objects that stand out to me are the dodecahedron and the icosahedron which have 12 and 20 sides, conversely 20 and 12 vertices (not edges, I mean the points where the edges converge). If you combine those two objects, not only do you have perfectly aligned intersections of vertices with faces, but 32 in all - exactly matched up.

I did a couple attempts with the Bing system and it can't resolve anything like precise geometry with fairly good lighting. However, I did a separate render depicting what I'm going on about. The only issue I see is that you can't see all the sides because the other half of the object is facing away, but I guarantee it has 32 perfectly oriented faces. All you'd have to do is put some antennas on the points and it would be geometrically correct, but maybe not visually. Anyhow, I just wanted to share. Maybe that helps your quest.

eta: the image I rendered (not with Bing) has both frames of the original icosahedron and dodecahedron outlining the 32 sided shape plus internally the frame of a cube with two tetrahedron frames that are at opposing orientations based on their geometric relationship to the cube, an octahedron frame that is the exact volumetric displacement of the space subtracted from the two tetrahedrons intersection. All of that is inside another cube inside a tetrahedron (all totaling 32 internal faces).

Take a spherical object: A Ball
Add four equal distant pyramids on it: 4-Sided Dice.
Double the pyramids: 8 pyramids
Again doubled: 16 pyramids
One more time: 32 pyramids.

The Pyramid on each faucet (correct term?) face is one half/One quarter the size of the faucet.
On the top of each pyramid is a probing antenna.

The entire structure is a transparent crystalline.  Think of a shiny Christmas ornament that you can see through.

I do see what you're saying. In the previous render I posted above, I just went about it without using triangle shaped facets. Instead they are either five sided or six sided. This way (which I realize isn't your way ) the sphere is 'perfectly' symmetrical.

This is what I came up with using modified four-sided tetrahedrons as you described.

Fun, Huh....
The pyramid side are flat without another triangle on it.

Well, for what it’s worth, it does have 32 sides.

I can imagine other ways to construct it, but that was the path of least resistance solution I came up with.

I wish you good luck.

"Steyr AUG Donut of Death reticle aiming at charging soviet soldier during ww3"
Link Posted: 3/10/2024 9:34:23 PM EDT
[Last Edit: 77grBTHP] [#28]
ETA: when I just used soviet soldier, it gave me images that looked like soviet era, so I added Futuristic as a term. The first couple of times it gave the usual stark content warning, but by simply describing what donut of death looks like, it tried a little harder... not exactly "charging" either.

Funny how it refuses to understand what "center" means and how the donut becomes round patches on the vest instead.

Not quite what you were asking for but maybe someone can build on it to get a better representation.

'FPS, aiming down sight at wwiii soviet soldier in distant field, reticle is small black torus shaped'

'FPS aiming down scope at wwiii soviet soldier in distant field, reticle has thick black torus circle, out of scope is out of focus and dark'

'aiming down scope at wwiii future soviet soldier in distant field, reticle has thick black torus circle, view surrounding scope is out of focus and dark'

'aiming down telescopic sight at distant wwiii future soviet soldier, black donut shape reticle, view surrounding scope is out of focus'

Those are getting very close.

Perhaps "reticle is thick black circle?" or "thick black donut circle"?

Holy smokes!

There are many memorable images in this thread, but your Steampunk Viking submarine series is extraordinary. Now I want a whole book of these or, better yet, an animated video.

I can’t imagine what you asked for to get that level of detail.
