17 multi-national special operations soldiers practice their sniper skills near Lizum, Austria during the International Special Training Centre’s (ISTC) High Angle/Urban Sniper Course, Oct. 13-26, 2013. The course provides U.S. and partner nation students with the most current tactics, techniques and procedures for sniper engagement in mountainous and urban terrain. Graduates of the course have an increased capability for working in concert with other nations within a NATO or coalition operating environment. The ISTC, located in Pfullendorf, Germany, provides special operations training to U.S. and partner nation forces in Europe, and is an vital component of U.S. Army Europe’s 7th Army Joint Multinational Training Command.

Hmm, SOTIC sounded so much more sophisticated than SF Sniper Course

The California National Guard's 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne) participated in the Special Forces Sniper Course at Camp Williams, Utah, recently. This marksman is shooting high angle shots from a ridgeline with an MK13. Shots were ranging from 500-1200 meters with up to 30% angle.

U.S. Army Special Forces Master Sgt. Eric Ludan, an instructor for the International Special Training Centre's (ISTC) Sniper Course, provides feedback to two Special Forces soldiers following a live-fire exercise July 24, 2010 at the Grafenwoehr Training Area. The Sniper Course is an intense five-week course that teaches NATO Special Operations Forces (SOF) in basic sniper fundamentals. The students spent the night stalking and observing their targets during the evaluated exercise. The facilities at the Joint Multinational Training Command allow the SOF throughout NATO to train to standard. (U.S. Army photo by Staff Sgt. Gina Vaile-Nelson)

Col. Wendell Fertig, a civil engineer in the Philippines before WWII, he entered active duty as a reserve captain, corps of engineers, and was promoted twice, to lieutenant colonel. Before Corregidor fell he was sent to Mindanao to continue his demolition work and when General Sharp surrendered he went into the hills and organized guerrilla operations against the Japanese, causing the Japanese to send 60,000 troops (to his 36,000 troops, of which 16,500 were armed) to stop guerrilla forces on Mindanao and 288,000 throughout the rest of the Philippines. His troops fought along side the U.S. 6th Army during the Philippines Campaign. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, and even though he commanded as many troops in combat as a corps commander, he was never promoted above colonel.
