We canz cast fiberglass? View Quote I actually have wondered if we can't work some glass into the receiver below the buffer tube. Not much room to work there though. May also need to glass the front of the magwell. The cracking there concerns me more than any other part of the casting. Hoping the new mold comes out a little thicker in that area. |

How about castings with barbed pins so even if it develops a crack it won't pull apart. View Quote That could work well with the Cavarms-style receiver BB wants to mold. The problem I'm having is the extremely thin section between front pivot pin and the magwell. It's even thinner than it should be because my first mold was a little messed up there, but even with proper thickness, it's one of the thinest parts of the receiver, and this urethane I'm using isn't very rigid. I'll end up reinforcing the magwell on a future generation mold, so it probably won't be a problem in the end, but it does worry me a bit. That and the bolt-stop plunger retaining pin. Not sure how to handle that, especially since I want to reinforce the receiver both in front of and after that point. I'm thinking I'll end up dropping the pin in through a slot in top and retaining it with a pair of small screws, but that's hardly an elegant solution. |

Especially since my Mk 2 has a magwell cracked right in two. |

Could find an old vest to cut up and use Kevlar for reinforcement as well.

View Quote The part in between the pin bosses doesn't even need to be there. The front part of the magwell can be solid below the pin bosses. But yes, that is a weak point. The front pin bosses both broke off of OrionHammer's PINEABORTION, I think he called his wooden lower. The bolt stop pin has often been replaced by screws. On a .308" billet receiver I saw @ Trinity Ordnance today, the forward boss is just faired into a reinforcement, and a screw goes through the bolt hold open. |

I think my next build will be a 6.5 grenedel View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes If Russian ammunition imports aren't banned on a Crimea/Ukraine/Georgia/Baltic pretext, I might also. I like the idea of a cheap plinking round with a bullet usable for hunting in a pinch (designed to tumble in hog-sized animals), with premium hunting and target bullets available, many factory loaded. If the Russian steel-cased ammo goes away, it won't be nearly as cheap to shoot. Currently I'm building 7.62x39 for the above reasons (and since I hunt a hardwood forest with short sight lines) and also since of all the ammunition we can get out of Russia right now, it's second only to .223/5.56 is the variety of other sources being imported or manufactured here, which might insulate it from a Russian ban more than the 6.5. Plus the fact I've always liked that round. Impressive - and impressive in terms of the tooling it must have worn out to build - but all titanium and still weighs more than a DPMS Gen. II? Seems a bit of an odd project. I think I'm running on about fifteen hours sleep in last four nights, so I'll say good night here. Catch y'all another night. |
