Man.. so much derp in the earlier pages of the thread. Syria was notified we were coming and you know what? They do not mind at this time as the reason for the French attack last week and what we are doing now is because the last week or so Isis had been kicking the crap out of Assads troops and making a major push and in doing so has caused a possibly major destabilizing situation in Turkey as they are being flooded with refugees they can not take care of. If we do not blunt them now odds are decent they are going to win and take Assad down. View Quote Which means what exactly for us? I don't see ant reason why we should care about Assad. Remember when declaring war was the purview of Congress? Which I note no one on this board cared about when Bush didn't bother with it. And no an "authorization of the use of force" is not a declaration of war. It most certainly is. The exact verbage is for pendantic morons. the fact is that is in the constitution because they want congress to approve military actions, which Bush did. Over and over again, in fact. You will never see another "declaration of war" because war is "illegal" what the constitution demands is the consultaion and approval of congress for military action. Which the AUMF did. Now, was it too expansive? That is arguable. But to equate that action to Libya or Kosovo, or Bosnia, or Haiti or Syria today, is not only wrong, its ridiculous. |

So we're bombing the guys we wanted to support two years ago. That means we're doing CAS for a country that used chemical weapons and violated our redlines, and another country thwt helped kill thosands of our troops.

Remember when declaring war was the purview of Congress? Which I note no one on this board cared about when Bush didn't bother with it. And no an "authorization of the use of force" is not a declaration of war. You're wrong. The Constitution does NOT require congress to issue something specifically called "a declaration of war." It merely says that Congress shall have the power to declare war. They can call that declaration an "authorization of force" or a "we're really mad at you, take this" or whatever the hell they want. President Bush asked them for permission, they gave it. That satisfies the constitutional requirements, whether or not it satisfies you. |

You would think that if we are going to go and start bombing the shit out of someplace because it is threat to us then we should follow the Constitution and declare war, don't you think? Like Jefferson did with the Barbary Pirates? I think history has proven that once someone gets power they disregard any written rules like a Constitution. That even applied to Jefferson that wrote the rules. Another example of the disregard against our founding principles; our revolution was initiated on a rebellion against a tax but once Washington became President he sent Federal troops to put down a tax rebellion. The power to go to war is established in the Constitution as being declared by the representatives of the people. We don't have a king or dictator in the Presidency that can go to war at their will. We have given the president some emergency powers but the intent was not to turn over the war making powers to the President. If ISIS is as a big enough threat to the American people then he should follow the Constitution and ask Congress for a declaration of war before sending bombers thousands of miles from the US. |
