I don't have a lot of faith in my fellow humans, but this thread is lowering even my already low expectations. |

At this point, Keith Olberman could go on a shooting spree and they could spin him into a Tea Partier. History not your strong point? Hitler was not a socialist. He was a fascist. Facists believe in the private ownership of industry, but government exerts a strong influence over industry. Fascism is generally anti-trade union and Hitler banned trade unions except for the official German Labour Front. Hitler was anti-socialist and strongly anti-communist. The name of his political party was just a name. Do you believe that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is a Democratic Nation? (Hint: You might better know this country as NORTH KOREA). This guy is a schizophrenic wingnut. His political leanings are no more important than his taste in food. Well i'm kind of confused about the anti-capitalism parts of the Nazi platform as well as all of Hitler's quotes espousing national socialist ideals (you know the sacrifices of the individual for the benefit of the State) and the basis of his party's platform- Feder's 25 points ( which won him so much public support). His appeal was to the working class and a return to the romantic ideal of a Germany before 1914 (which was heavily influenced by socialist thought) and the use of slave labor. What he started out as and what he became might be two different things, but his roots are in the Socialist movement. It has been said that he borrowed much from Marx' and Engels' literature for material in his speeches. Marx and Hitler were both heavily anti-semitic.Like so many other tyrants, when you reach the pinnacle, you might seek to limit your competition to that power (see Stalin). Maybe that could explain why he sought to eliminate the trade unions, arrest and imprison all of their leaders as well as institute his own union, the German Labour Front, once he became de Fuhrer (one that he could trust not to be a source of agitation) Might be able to see a parallel with China's State Capitalism and Corporatism as the guiding influence of their 'capitalist' practice. You know that third way. Mussolini was a devout socialist before coming up with the Third Way. What they all do share is authoritarianism and nationalism as the basic structure for their regimes. Fascism has more in common with socialism than it does with laissez-faire capitalism. Its a collectivist philosophy. |

I just found out about this... Can someone give me a summary of the last 96 (!!!!!!) pages!? I don't feel like reading through tons and tons of commentary, just to get an ounce of fact about what happened. I read the first couple pages of the thread, and it was mostly conjecture. Is there more of a consensus of what really happened here? glad you're ok dude. how'd you end up in a coma? I'm in the same boat, Directv's been out and I listen to my ipod in the car. Just saw this thread about 10 mins ago. same here... i was at a cabin out of town all weekend and just now saw this on the news when my movie / DVD ended... i would like to learn more about the shooter- particularly motive and political leanings... i can tell hes mentally fucked- but does this have something to do with the AZ immigration bill? was he a lefty ? so far all i can find in this thread is people asking for links, and people arguing whether hitler was a socialist or not. what do we know about the shooter so far ?????? |

I don't think I've ever heard anyone claim Hitler was a socialist before. He was about as far right as you can get. It was funny he didn't care for Benito even though they were about one in the same. talk about a derailed motherfucking thread. what does hitler and socialism have to do with this case? can you take it elsewhere so we dont get this thread locked once it hits 99 or 100 pages ?
do we know if the shooter was a lefty or his motives yet ? was she trying to repeal the healthcare bill ? |

Only a couple more pages on this thread.
Lets keep it as good as it's been. Things that are said here will be repeated some other place for sure. Tomorrow will most likely bring a linked thread and we don't need any shit spots to be resurrected at some other time to make us look like shitheads. Thanks. |

I'm not reading this entire thread, so I'll just leave my $.2 and be done with it.
The shooter will most certainly face the death penalty. I have no problem with this, and I'll volunteer to do the job for substantially less than the cost of the three chemicals the they will most likely kill him with; free. The fact that Congresswoman Gifford is still alive is a testament to the will, strength and resiliency of the human spirit and body. While Congresswoman Gifford getting shot is a tragedy in itself, we must remember the other people that were shot and injured in the shooting. Christina-Taylor Green was 9 years old, and had never hurt a soul. Being a new father, I can only imagine how it feels to have a child taken. |

They were natural progressions of the discussion as it was discovered that the shooter listed Mein Kampf and The Communist Manifesto as some of his favorite books. Questioning his motives is actually what brought politics to the discussion. |

Sorry. 4.5 hours behind the curve on the thread. Catching up as i go. believe the derail came about as people were trying to define the shooter's political affiliation from his facebook and videos. so tangentally its connected to the left or right ideology of the shooter by definition... |

Palin's image is simply the most visible in a long line of violent rhetoric coming from the right. To claim that Palin's rhetoric is violent is disingenuous at best. Meh, imprecise language. Allusions to guns? fighting? I know you're familiar with Sharron Angle's guffaw over the 2nd Amendment. Things like that. People on both sides of the aisle use "targeted" and "fighting" as metaphors for the political process. As has been shown on multiple occasions in this thread already. Calling that "violent rhetoric" is disingenuous, and you know it. The only people who consider that "inciting violence" are the morons on the left who have a pathological need to blame this on anyone who disagrees with them. |

Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: Hitler and the Nazis were very much anti-capitalists. In fact, Hitler said if given the choice between capitalism and communism, he said without a doubt communism would be the better choice. The Nazis were a socialist party. National Socialism is not the same thing as the socialism the soviets espoused. Wrong. Some modern American conservatives (on here at least) don't use the classical conservative/progressive political axis, hence the perpetual debate on this site about whether the Nazis were left or right, socialist or fascist. Right. The circular spectrum was based on a fucking seating chart, not exactly realistic. The practical political spectrum is the yardstick. On it there isn't much difference between Socialist and Fascist. Hence the argument.

In his freshman and sophomore years at Mountain View High School, Mr. Loughner flew under the radar.
"All he did was play video games and play music," said Tommy Marriotti, a high school friend. Mr. Marriotti said much of Mr. Loughner's free time was devoted to the school band. He wasn't especially political, Mr. Marriotti said, though he expressed frustration with the Bush Administration. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703667904576071191163461466.html?mod=rss_Politics_And_Policy |

Motivation for the attack seems (from his social media postings) to come from his delusions, not any political factor in the real world. If you watch his youtube videos you'll understand, by failing to understand the gibberish. was she trying to repeal the healthcare bill ? Don't know the answer to that, she was on Fox News one day before the shooting to promote a bill she was introducing for a Congressional pay cut. |

Carolyn McCarthy readies gun control bill
One of the fiercest gun-control advocates in Congress, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.), pounced on the shooting massacre in Tucson Sunday, promising to introduce legislation as soon as Monday. http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0111/47338.html Yeah... They're not burning the midnight oil. She's already got some canned shit ready for contingency. what are the chances she introduces something that will pass ? I amagine another AWB ? or atleast something restricting "hi cap" mags Republicans control the House, it's not going to happen. and Reagan signed a machine gun ban into law because he thought it'd be deemed unconstitutional and repealed. Which was an ammendment attached to the FOPA which was huge win for 2A. The internet wasn't around last time (in 1994). The speed of communications and "rallying the troops" (Oh teh Noes I just used violent military rhetoric ) can help stave off any attack (Oh my God I did it again). Now that one house is controlled by newly elected Republicans, the odds are there will be no new legislation. Just like after VA Tech. |
