Well, I should have been riding again today, but the scavenger hunt thread seems fucked at the moment.
Instead, I pulled the scratched VSTROM stickers off my bike and polished the plastic. I know Abominable won't be thrilled, but I ordered 6" BFL stickers for the sides of the bike. I tried to find something different, and I may still change them later if I can find something I like better. |

Wow swing set, That looks like a fantastic ride, I am jealous. Thanks for sharing your ride report here. In July a buddy and I are riding the Magruder corridor and your pics make it that much harder to wait.

Oh and the black reflective vinyls cost me about $40. So a whole new look for around $120. |

Will the plastidip peel off if you want? There was a guy near hear who did the WWII mouth with teeth on his Vee. Saw it on VSRI. Pretty awesome. Of course that was 6 years ago

It's only been a week and a half, the nice thing is if you scratch it, you just spray over it. You can peel it off, I tested that on another plastic first. |

Quoted: Just got back from several days on the TWVT (that's Trans West Virginia Trail, an addition to the TET & TAT if you're unaware). It's a 700+ mile trail going in two slices through the entire state of WV into Tennessee where it links up with the Trans America Trail. It ranges from mild back road paved roads, to some short section of 2-digit twisties, and the better portion is unpaved roads, derelict roads, trails and goat paths marked for severity. It's an endeavor better suited to a thumper than an adventure bike, but my buddy and I hit it on my DL650 and his GS1200A. We did the leg starting in the upper panhandle of WV going down to Jellico. We had no itinerary or timeline, just ride and see where we got. Turns out the trail has changed substantially since originally laid out, some sections widened and fast by oil work, while others have turned rutted and nearly impassable by big-bike...but we gave it all a shot. Our mph average was pathetic because of the terrain and cautious riding where a gravel truck or oil service vehicle will send you off a hillside. But, that just added to the fun and made us alert. The riding is just spectacular...it's a crazy mix of "holy shit", "wow this is pretty", "damn these twisties look like ribbon candy" and "where the fuck are we"....sometimes within the hour. Even with a good bit of offroad experience on big bikes, I found several sections white-knuckle hard because of massive two-track ruts that would bury you if you crossed up, and even with "knobbies" (lol), neither one of us could overcome some of the worst of it and we had several small sections where we had to "walk/power" the bikes through as a team then go back for the other bike. One part required a tow when I buried the back end in a muddy spot. We renegade camped along the entire route, staying behind old community churches, in old graveyards, and sometimes on power line roads where we were generally left alone. One night some drunk side-by-side driving teenagers nearly wrecked into our campgrounds, but they were friendly enough. It's laid out so that some small town food/gas made it pretty comfortable, and aside from one episode where a union-bolt came loose and I lost my front brakes completely (requiring a long backtrack to a hardware store), we had no real issues. Amazingly, neither one of us dropped a bike the entire time...but encountered many instances where it should have happened. Panic stop/full slide when a deer ran out in front of me, my buddy glanced off a stump and into a sapling, but stayed upright. One is it's all public roads (with some optional hero-sections that go through the Hatfield McCoy network) so yes it's all legal for Jeep access. The other answer is the guy who laid it out only gives out the tracks by request for motorcycle travel, so he might get froggy if Jeep guys share it. Same with the TAT, which is a commercial venture. Right or wrong, I did agree not to share my tracks. There are some sections that would, quite honestly, get ruined if frequented in wet weather by Jeep traffic...little access roads that only have traffic going to an old church, etc. And, there are some sections that are impassable by Jeep (tho very few). Slips and washouts have rendered some of the unmaintained roads too narrow for anything wider than a quad or big m/c. If you're looking for WV jeep trails, I've seen people post up rides or routes on some of the forums for them...probably running the same areas but maybe not the little sketchy roads we hit. |

They go where you point them, but with something that big and top heavy breaking loose here and there on gravel or loose surfaces, the tendency is to fight that movement. The best thing to do is to ride some gravel or dirt and stand up....squeeze the bike with the knees, loose grip, and let the bike move under you. Also lets you weight the outside peg on turns and get better grip in the turns. When I take new guys on dirt rides that's my first advice and it usually helps a lot. |

Thought I'd mention, over the last two rides, I averaged 59mpg. I was pretty pumped to see it get that kind if milage.
I imagine it's due to the extra tooth on the sprocket? |

Still love the cruising ease, and milage though. |

I'm halfway considering the warhawk shark teeth stickers. I found a set on Amazon that would seem the right size. I'll have to see what I think when the BFLs get here. Maybe a combination of both.

View Quote You might consider a soft-bag solution instead of hard panniers too - Ortleib bags over racks, Giant Loop style, etc. They're not as bulky, heavy, and if you crash you're not going to break a fibula getting pinched under them. There's also the Moose rack/panniers, and a few other options out there if you google them. A lot of guys seem to run Pelicans or Caribous or the like on the DR's, probably better for impacts than aluminum. |

I love the intake stickers. How hard is it to get the front cowling sides off of the nose and headlight assembly? That scares me more than anything. I've got the tank removal down pretty well. Itd be fun to paint it up, but I doubt it would turn out as well as that bike. |

Got a new question for you riding gurus. How do you cross a stream, say 12-18" deep? Feet on the pegs, or out? Do you stand up on the pegs, or sit?
I want to ride up a local road to a ghost town, and it require several shallow crossings. On 4wheelers, I don't even give it a second thought, other than making sure it isn't too deep to kill it. |

Yup, it's the second picture I can see in my mind. The stream I'd be crossing would be entirely covered in rock, some pretty good size. On a 4 wheeler, you just bump over them and the machine slips side to side. That would seem to be mugh more difficult on two wheels.

View Quote Unless the rock is taller than the radius of the tire (sometimes not even then), you can roll right over it. If it's between two rocks, you'll roll right between them. The bike, under it's own power won't fall down if pinned throttle through most any creek even if it's slick rocks...what fucks you up is you, 99% of the time...you start bouncing, you fight it, you freak out, let off the throttle, get wet. A trick I like to use when navigating ANYWHERE offroad when I come to an obstacle is to point/aim...it's almost a necessity with trail riding. Pick a point on the opposite side of the creek where fording it looks like the easiest/most shallow line and will yourself to keep staring at it....ride to that point and look nowhere else, even if the bike bucks or slides. If you look at your fender, or the water, or try to avoid shit, you target-fixate, take your balance to an extreme, you get wet. |

On the KLR? No. The intake is at the rear of the seat, and just under it. The water would need to be much, much higher.

First up, boots: I returned the Fox boots. I liked them but just couldn't find the size I wanted. I've ordered a pair of Tourmaster Solution Airs, so I'll let you know how that goes.
I'm also thinking about a longish ride for the 4th. Right now the weather doesn't look like it will cooperate, but if it changes I'll be riding from Nashville to Charlotte. Probably not any adventure riding, but it will be the longest trek I've undertaken since getting the bike. I'll be leaving the 2nd and returning the 5th. Pray for the rain to go away, I don't mind a little but I'm not doing 8 hours in it twice |
