Sadly, I don't get to use mine enough to wear them out right now.

Heat. Probably from dumping mags and/or a drum! |

wow!!! Wish I could afford to shoot that much. How many rounds you got through it so far? Just shy of 8,000 rounds, majority of it was XM193. Almost all on the 10.5" barrels, but about 750 were on my 20" Remington. |

What ammo grain did you use? I know 223 is hard to find subsonic so should we use regular ammo? |

Nice colors! What can is that.. Liberty Torch? |

Can someone explain this? How is the brake taking load off of the can? |

Can someone explain this? How is the brake taking load off of the can? I'd assume that the break is taking the brunt of the flame cutting coming out of the muzzle. And the diversion/swirling of the hot gas is just enough to keep it from eroding the can. |

Cool pics. Anybody know when it's a good time to replace a muzzle brake? I've got a M42K coming soon and just curious for the future.

Just look at it and decide you don't like the way it looks. Maybe 20k rounds downrange to replace the $150 brake. Also depends on what length barrel and what kind of ammo. |

Thanks. My SBR loves M855 so that's what I stick with. Probably going to take me a while to get to 20K.

Brakes from AAC/Surefire are made from high-quality stainless steel. Their suppressors are made from high quality 7xx series Inconel. If the brake will last around 20K rounds, doesn't it stand to reason that the blast-baffle of the suppressor would, too? I see a lot of to do over using a brake as a sacrificial component, but shouldn't a quality suppressor out-last the barrel even with a FH on a 10.5"? |

I'd rather wear out a $140 unregistered item that I can pick up any day of the week, over an $800+ registered item that took 6 months to get. The amount of abuse the suppressor can or should be able to handle is kind of irrelevant, don't you think?

The amount of abuse the suppressor can or should be able to handle is kind of irrelevant, don't you think? Not really irrelevant, I hate brakes, and if there is even the slightest chance I will fire the weapon unsuppressed, I don't want a braked 10.5" gun. If you are a high-volume shooter, then I can see it, but I just bought two 556-212's and they should last me a lifetime of shooting unless a baffle-strike occurs. Suppressors are wear items like a barrel, in my way of thinking. I for one do not want to take my suppressors to a class where I will be shooting the cheapest reliable ammunition I can get hold of, getting the barrel hot, etc. and I also don't want to be "that guy" who brings a braked rifle to class, either. |

I don't want to burn out my can, but the limited amount that I shoot (time and money for ammo) means it is going to be years and years before there is any possibility of eroding my can significantly. Changing jobs and having a baby in the last 6 months has allowed me to order ammo and not shoot it!

[div] I do understand your comments on shooting the brake unsuppressed, I was next to a braked/unsuppressed .308 a few days ago at an indoor. My thought's on a suppressed SBR have always been to never take the suppressor off, so the brake wouldn't matter to me or anyone that shot with me. I also understand the low round counts that alot of people shoot (myself included), but then I look at the blast cone on the M42K on the first page of this thread. After just 500 rounds on an SBR without a break it looks bad. I think you'd all agree that 500 rounds is nothing for even the most reserved shooter. Just my .02, a differance of opinion is all. I bought my can to use it, and have only fired 5 shots with it off since I got it. When my form 1 comes back I'll be switching from my FH to a brake to avoid the inevitable wear. I'd like it to last a lifetime, not simply x-amount of rounds. |

There is a substantial difference in erosion between a 10.5" barrel and 11.5" barrel. Look at the blast baffle on my can above. I haven't tracked my shooting but that's seen over 500 rounds from my 11.5" and that's not counting at least as much from my 16" and the fact that I got used it in a private transfer.

would tjis fall under AAC warrenty? would the rework the insides if tne baffelswas super erodef? Ok you really need to work on your typing skills. I think this is what you were trying to say. Would this fall under AAC's warranty? Would they rework the insides if the baffles was to erode? Anyways. Im not sure about ACC's warranty. But YHM's warranty covers cleaning & replacing worn out baffles free of charge. Unless your host firearm has an incorrectly threaded barrel or you dont install the QD mount correctly... (They actually want you to have a licensed gunsmith install the mount) Or you just do something really stupid like not threading the can on completely. |
