Here's my first AK build--1986 Romy G kit on a Tapco flat finished with Duracoat HK Black.  It took a while to get the tools and build the jigs, but it was worth the effort.  I had a few problems, especially with welding the rails since my tig welder which has issues with the "lift arc" feature; however, there wasn't a problem that couldn't be fixed with a hammer, file, or Dremel.  The AK is much more forgiving than the G3's I've built, thank goodness.  The bolt carrier stuck on the second round, but it's gone 150 rounds or so since then without any problems.  Thanks to all the contributors on this site, as well as pookie, GunsGutsandGod, the Leck Family website, and everyone else.

It's funny--a year ago, you couldn't have convinced me that I'd ever own an AK.  Now, all I want to do is get busy and build another.  For under $200, you can't go wrong!

180bbstm,
how much did this one cost to build?

This is my last build, super quality M 92 kit, on a 1.mm GT reciever, refinished furniture, and a fake can by sportsnut when he was still building them. A super gun, although I try to keep the round count down on this one..

Wow it's tuff to follow Tapeo1, what a great job!!!
Here are pics of my Romy-G AK build. I actually did 3 at the same time but this one is mine. We went to the range for the first time today and it ripped thru 80 rounds as smooth as silk with zero problems. I love the Tapco stock, handguard, and grip.

I don't know why the screws look bright in the pics, they aren't in person though. I'm not 100% happy with the finish yet.
I just refinished it, so here is the final look for it. Also added the Rick's Vortex style brake.

My newest build.  A Bulgy kit built on a Tapco flat.  The receiver is finished with duplicolor engine paint.  It matches the original finish pretty good.  The wood is Soviet.

It's a combination of betadine, minwax red mahogony stain that I diluted a bit with mineral spirits and about 3 coats of Zinser amber shellac. I bleached the wood before finishing it.

Hey Rafterman, I appreciate the response.

If you don't mind how secure/tight is the foregrip.  I have thought about using the Tapco Gas Tube Optic mount, but actually like the looks of yours better.  Is yours secure enough for a optic to keep zero?  This would be on a Rommy G build.  Also, I'm assuming the fab foregrip doesn't replace the gas tube.

Thanks.

Ryan

That is a good question.  I actually plan on putting a reflex sight up front (kobra maybe).  I think 2 things will keep it zeroed well.  The fact that most of the jarring recoil of an AK is directed towards the butt stock (I do have a buffer in mine) also, the upper hand guard actually kind of locks into the lower hand guard via a couple of tabs/slots.  This should give it even more stability.  As far as it feels, definitely very solid.  My kit is a Romy G as well.

Jesse

Also, the system is saying you are not accepting IM, may wanna double check your settings.
