www.GunAccessories.com I'm really impressed with it. It's a shame that I wasn't as impressed with their service.

I just mounted up my IOR to it today.

Built with the help and expertise of gunwolf.

My younger brother built the bottom rifle, though I finished them both.  The rivets look like crap, but not bad considering it was our first attempt.

Here's my latest project.
Vector AK-47, KG gunkote in Kahki Tan and Flat Black, and internals in silver.
The white numbers on the rear sight is nail polish.
The hand guards were just drilled to give better venting. Pattern was ala M203 and measured to avoid the internal ribs.

This is my half breed. Hay left over parts make good guns too !

As you can see it's a AMD65 and A Romy G kit. I wonted a side folder on mine and I like the 65's best.( Gives me plenty of room with my big head.)
So this is what I came up with.

Very nice rifles.

I thought about doing some builds, but the tool costs seemed prohibitive to me. Did you guys spend much on tools?

Cost is relative....Like they say there are many ways to skin a cat.
How many do you plan to build? I'm assuming you have shop tools, small drill press, angle grinder, punches, BFH, Dremel tool.  If your going to build more than a few you can go with a good rivet press set like Plinkers Jig tools for $200.00 for a set . If your only going to build 1 or 2  you can make a rivet tool yourself from a bolt cutter for much less.  I use 100% receivers on all my builds. You can bend up a flat for less but it needs a tool. Special tools like a flat bending jig, trigger guard jig, barrel press kits, 12 ton shop press are nice to have and make building easier but you can build an AK with simple hand tools. There is lots of info regarding building AK's out there and many ways to build them.
Here's a link to lots of information.

Thanks for the link. I haven't had enough time to do anything more than skim through the list of links that it offers, but the site looks like it has more than enough to get me through any builds that I might do.

The wish list of AKs that I'd like to build is six items long. From what I've read on a few other forums, I think I'd enjoy building the AKs, and I can probably get access to all of the tools you list, except for the drill press. So I think I'll just go ahead and tool up.

Could you recommend any brands or models of drill press that could get the job done? I'd like to start price checking.

Thanks.

If you have a Harbor Freight store near you you can get 1 of these.
Drill Press
I have 1 and it's work fine for AK work. They sometimes have 15% off coupons in their mailings.

Cool.

There's a Harbor Freight store about an hour's drive away. The price is a lot lowerthan I was expecting.

OK back to show and tell.
Here's a M70AB2 I just finished as a match to the one I posted above.
NDS receiver, Oxpho-Blue finish, I stripped the HG, stained & shellac. Refinished the PG too. Gold inlay on the engravings.

Ah my friends I have built my second AK, it's a very rewarding feeling... This one isn't painted yet. It's a Romanian kit, all matching numbers on an Armory USA 1.6 receiver (yes I hand reduced the trunnions with files), VLTOR 6 position stock, Choate forward furniture, I'm drawing a blank on this really nice pistol grip (heavy weight rubber/plastic), I put a rail on it and you can see the weaver B-Square mount on it, Bulgy waffle... G2 dbl hook and AMD muzzle break.

I thought it might be overkill on the expensive furniture but what the heck! Field tests to follow!

Any suggestions on optics? I want to go with a small magnified scope mebbe a 4x or 3x, ideas?

Does this count??  I know its not just screwed together parts from M1S but I thought it would be funner to really put the elbow grease to it....

9mm Carbine using STEN mags, Mac-11 mag well, 2" shortened AK receiver (Laser cut)

Trunnion and trunnion stop (custom)

Custom travel stop for bolt carrier, also shows bolt/carrier "locked" together for blowback

Installed in receiver... You can see the bolt stops in this picture

Here is a video showing the bolt locking/unlocking allowing maintenance (most 9mm's are welded)

Shot down the pipe showing 1/8" plate steel trunnion and 16" uzi carbine barrel

Field Stripped view inside

Modified "JP" carrier on left, OEM AK47 carrier on right. Can you spot the difference?

Inside rails I cut myself from .060" stock

1st step on the way to the finished trunnion (1/8" plate box fitted to UZI barrel)'

Back of receiver showing attach point for buttstock

Rear stock attachment point (notice stud AND 1/8" shear pin for alignment)

Small detail showing 1/8" spacer between magwell and receiver to align feedlips

And last but not least I did all the work shown with these 2 tools along with a 4" makita grinder and lots of 4" 30, 50, 80 and 120grit sanding disks....

I shot it for the first time on New Years 2007, Ran 64 rounds thru 2 magazines with no failures. I built the gun as a test of myself to see if I could make a "resistance" or "clandestine" type rifle in my garage with basic tools. It looks like it works. It could easily be used to acquire a better weapon. I plan to plink with it very occasionally. I have since added a red dot scope (cheap 40mm leapers) but no pics of that yet. Even sighting down the 16" UZI 9mm barrel you can hit water jugs at 30-50ft every try....

Thanks for taking the time to read my post...comments welcome. As I said the gun was INTENTIONALLY made to be ugly, as in clandestine resistence weapon. Also I wanted it obvious to the untrained eye (I.E. LEO) that it was a homebuild and NOT a defaced AK47.

Thanks again.
