What are the rules to quantify "a build", I never did figure this one out.

Have you modified it to a point where it has an effective difference from it's original configuration or built it from the ground up to best fit your applications? Yes? That's a build. And that ain't to say there's anything wrong with store bought - if you're running something like a 12.5 Triarc or a DD Mk18 and all you did was slap an Aimpoint PRO and a sling on it, while it's not really a build persay it's an outstanding fighting carbine to be proud in and happy with. |

Attached File Essential Arms lower and so many modifications over the years I can’t keep up. I just got it back from Cerakote today. |

This one is going to be on the opposite end of the spectrum from recoiljunky's full-tilt boogie hardware. It's my second AR and my first "build". I assembled it from a pedestrian Anderson AM15 lower and a PSA rifle kit. My add-ons to the PSA package are the Magpul MBUS rear sight, the ASAP ambidextrous sling mount, the MS3 GEN2 sling, and a 20-round PMAG. I like 20-round mags because I think it's plenty of capacity, weighs less, doesn't stick out below the pistol grip, and makes the gun look and act well-balanced.

And then if you're >16" and >26", you've got a rifle. Also worth considering is that most all the above can change based on attachments, ie pistol+vfg=AOW, 'firearm'+stock=SBR, etc, that's just the tl;dr for lengths alone as far as I've been able to figure out the ATF's arbitrary idiocy. |

But anything below a 16 inch rifle with a rifle stock is all automatically an SBR in either the legal way with a stamp or an illegal way without a stamp. But if it's under 16 and has a brace, then it's a pistol. If you get caught with a short barrel that has no brace and no stamp, then no matter what anyone says, what actually matters is what you would be charged with: possession of an illegal SBR. |
