Thanks. I guess my search didn't work because I didn't spell Guatemalan right. I don't know why my eyes didn't work when I viewed the forum.
Lots of people bought it a few years back, I got some then, awesome ammo. Shoots great, hot, and fairly accurate.
The newer batch that came out: Word around the campfire is that on average 20-30% of the ammo is extremely corroded. At the $195-205 or so price per 1080(?) its insanely stupid to buy this ammo. Get brand new Federal AE for the same price, brand new and NO corrosion issues. |
I just bought a full 1440 rd case & found it to be as clean as the day it was made.
The battle pack I bought was in perfect condition, the stuff shot great out of my Carbine, I'll be buying more.
I shot just 300 rnds from a battle pack bought at a pawn shop many years ago, '85 lote 4. All was bright and shiny and shot great. It was the only battle pack I had and now that know how good it is I wish I had it back. Oh well, still have two mags loaded up.

It wasn't spelled right in many thread titles. Yeah, but is it good? I would like to find some and try it out. TS |

The "new" guatemalan going around was manufactured around the same time as the stuff that was out a few years ago. Mine is headstamped '91. There are new packs out with the same stamp. So yes it is good ammo. Accurate, hot, and shoots well. but IMO stay away from it. Why spend $210 for 1080 rounds whith 20-30% of them overly corroded (granted it will probably still work) when you can get brand new ammo just as good or better without the corrosion issues for about the same? Q3131 will run around $220-240, Federal AE can be had for around 205-220, and dare I say Wolf is around 130-150. |

It works out to $171.25 per 1000 plus shipping. That's a significant savings. And AIM are now inspecting each crate to cull out the corroded ones. Plus I tested the "ugly" stuff and it worked well for me. With all that in mind, I think it's a good -- not spectacular -- deal. |
I have read all I could find here about it and went ahead and ordered a crate.
For those who seem to say there is better out there I have to ask, where? At the price no its not great and if I can find better next month I will buy it instead. No I dont want 855 type ammo, I prefer 193 stuff and I dont want to buy the 223 comercial stuff. The new Wolf 193 sounds interesting but Im not sure. If this crate is clean and good to go I might buy another one. Or two. I hate to say it but todays Gautamalan might be tomorrows South African. Regreting we didnt buy more. Well maybe not that bad. How about a bird in the hand,,,,, |
Ding ding ding. It aint as nice as the sealed stuff we got in the SA 5.56.... but you cannot live in the past. That stuff is gone. Might be back, might not. Show me where there is M193 spec ammunition, boxer primed, for under 19 cents per round delivered? Nowhere. I'd say the other really good deal right now, is the Radway green SS109. |
The IMG I got was TARNISHED only!
Very good ammo and shot just like Win Q3131 or A etc! IMG 9-89 powder 25grs FMJ 55.2 Brass Case 98.o grs black selant green selant on primer |
Yea, plus shipping brings it to around 185-190, pay the extra $15 and get AE. |

It shoots well enough that I just ordered my 5th crate of it. The first 2 crates were OK, shot fine but tarnished/corroded looking a bit. [case only, not the bullet] It seems it is more a reaction then what I consider actual corrosion where the case is actually affected. Regardless, I was a bit leery but the rest was very good and I ordered another case that was in fantastic shape. Ordered another one today.
I'd STILL trust it a heck of a lot more the the 193PD junk that they sell. At least it does not look like a dump truck drove over half of it, and leprechans took hammers to the rest. Like others have said, you might be waiting a long time before you find any more surplus 5.56 193spec offered for sale. [Then again, you never know] One never know what will happen tomorrow with surplus, govt regs, and UN interference. While I can hope for the best, I'd prefer to prepare for the worst. If it never comes, that'd please me immensely. |
$185 per 1080 rounds is cheaper then 193 PD without the free dents and dings, inconsistant powder amounts and bullet setback problems. AIM is checking all crates of it now for corrosion problems and has been very good about treating the customer if there is a problem. |
Really? Where can we all order Federal AE for $200-$205 delivered? I havent seen any for that price you quote. Ammoman.com has AE for $219 delivered. That is 14% more expensive... and not as hot. I will stick with Guatemalan. |
Like a I say..... To many Picky Bastards out their........ it's ammo... not a Ferrari....... Spend more time shooting your ammo then gushing over it wishing it was Brand new virgin reload-able factory ammo. Russian..Malaysian..South African... English.....Czech..... USA..... it all went bang when I pulled the trigger.... it still does.

------------> 87 !!! **********************************************************************
I don't know, would you drink the water in Guatamala ? |
Actually its $205 at Outdoor Marksman, and now 206 at Wideners, sorry off by a little. Still I would rather have that, to each their own. |
We arent talking about comparing this to XM193PD, yeah I would rather have the recent Guatemalan stuff over that too. Dont get me wrong, this is good ammo. I just dont see spending the money on it when its hit and miss with the corrosion. I know, AIM will refund it, IMO I dont give a crap, give me some 100% working Federal AE for $205 a case instead! |
Where do you buy it and can you buy less than a crate? Q3131 shoots like shit out of my carbine.
TS |
Because it is non-corrosive primers.... a distinction that must be made when advertising surplus ammunition. Has nothing to do with the surface defect the arfcom army is referring to as "corrosion" on the external case. |
So in other words, the brass is tarnished? TIA, TS |
Some is. Some is bright and shiny. Some has significant surface corrsion. AIM is now inspecting crates before they ship to ensure the really bad stuff doesnt go out the door. |
I bought a crate at the beginning, and finally went thru it all and "de-boxed" it..
Approximately 200 rnds. with what I would consider "corrosion".. I do not believe it will be a problem in shooting at all though.. Others are "tarnished" but not a SINGLE dent found in the lot!! I believe I will order at least 2 more crates, without even being able to shoot any yet!! Brenden |
I shot my first bunch of Guano stuff today. I tried to do a reliability test with it. I purposely did not clean my rifle after my last 2 shooting sessions (500 + rds total). Today, I just lubed the carrier with some CLP, and shot my 1st 150 rounds of the Guano stuff. Not a problem at all for me. As far as accuracy goes, Minute of FBI Q-target is good enough for me!
It has not proved very accurate at all for me thus far. I shot a single 5 shot group and it did 3.8"@100yds. I would need to shot several groups to really make a determination..... but M193 in general is not target ammo. |
