That's because prior to circa 1985 there was no separate branch for Army aviators. That's why a lot of Helicopter pilots during the Vietnam War were branched Infantry, Armor, Cavalry, etc.

And to the OP, it is very doubtful that a Special Forces soldier would be able to fly a helicopter during that era. It takes 18 months as it is to get a soldier all the way thru the SF training pipeline let alone adding another year for Army rotary wing aviation training.

They are a few documented cases of SF qualified soldiers who were also pilots in Vietnam. One was actually busted by POW Network for claiming more medals than he actually earned, but was proven to have been in fact both a pilot and a green beret, albeit a year apart on different tours.

+1000.............I flew with quite a few guys that had the lightning bolt and sword patch on their sleeve with the SF tab on top.

It was also quite common for crew members in aviation units to be taught the basics of rotary wing flight, especially the landing part.  There are quite a few cases where the pilots were wounded and or killed and the crew chief having to take the controls to get them back to base.  It's true that it takes a long time to master helicopter flight, but the basics can be taught fairly easy with some practice.

Gunships are a little bit more complicated................but when you're from Hollyweird, anything is possible.

It takes a hell of a lot more than 'some informal flight instruction' to handle a helicopter...



Airplane? I could believe...



Helcopter? Not unless he had civvie training before the military....

Very true.



My dad was a crew chief on the UH-1N in the Marines. He told me that the pilots trained him how to fly it just in case one of the pilots die or whatever. My dad also got to fly the AH-1w a few times as a crew chief.
