I've never flown before cause I am deathly affraid to. So my wifes dad called and asked if I wanted to go up in a small plane. I said yes. What am I in for?

Just remember that doors and windows open up in flight on Cessnas. Dont freak out over it like my girlfriend did. As long as you are buckled in you should not fall out.

Seriously, small planes are fun. And like someone said earlier, if you get a chance to take the yoke, do it!

The only difference is that the takeoff angle is a lot steeper, so you will be really back in your seat looking up when you take off.
Other than that, its pretty much the same experience other than being more noisy and bumpy.

Only other thing is that small planes seem to crash a lot more often

cut back on the power all the way. pull back on the yoke, and just as the nose breaks downward, step on the right pedal and hold it to the floor. It's a blast.

Just kidding (although spins are fun when you know how to enter and exit them safely)

You will have a lot of fun, you will gain an appreciation for flying...

you will probably start thinking about a pilot's license. That's what got me interested in flying.

eta: First thing, relax... people do it all the time. Chewing gum will help with equalizing the pressure buildup in your eardrums. If you dive, you already know the valsalva maneuver... drop the jaw and pop your ears? Third, relax. Actually traveling in three dimensions is better than any video game.

Yokes are ok if it is all you can get, but I prefer the stick because it just seems more natural. Have fun!

All planes will eventually land.

It's the ratio of takeoffs to safe landings that need to be the same....

Man I love small planes like the cessna 172...They have a glide ratio and are safer than some big rock of a jumbo jet that glides directly to the ground..

eta...I went through Private IFR and I whish I would have got my CFII

Flying in small planes is a LOT of fun. I don't think I've ever known someone who didn't like it.

You should be warned, depending on what the pilot is doing, you could get sick. Don't eat heavy before the flight.

Thats what I did in mexico para sailing. Love plane rides, hate ladders/ heights.

but thats the drawback to being a skydiver

flying a small plane is cool. if it wasn't so freaking expensive and full of regulations (now, compared to 20 years ago when I started)

I'd probably still be flying today.

Ask if you can sit up front. Seriously, it is a far better, more comfortable ride.

Light aircraft seem frail and delicate, but in fact, they are pretty tough. Fairly reliable and foolproof also.

its like being in a compact car going down a bumpy road on the side of a cliff. you feel like your going 10 miles an hour and the veiw is great , but its cramped and a little bit of roller coaster fun rolled into it.

A 757 (or any other airliner) has a much better glide ratio than a 172, by a long shot (17:1 vs 9:1).

To the original poster, if you get the chance to go up, do it in the morning or the evening. The air will be much smoother and it will make for a better experience. You'll have a blast as seeing the ground from 500-2000ft for the first time is awe-inspiring.
