If you're from Southeast Asia, it's more like "Pauk-is-tan".  If you're a normal American, it's "Pack-i-stan".  If you're a news reporter who wants to sound cool, it's "pock-is-tawn".

Pakistan is actually an English word. It comes from the acronym Pashtun, Afghan, Kashmere, and Indian. Since it is an English acronym, it is only correct to pronounce it pak-i-stan.

Great vowel shift of the 1500, best guess that is was brought about by the Black Death.

And why are you calling it guilt?

Obama says it pretty close to how it is pronounced in Urdu or in surrounding languages.

It literally means pure or clean land (pak kardan in Farsi means to clean, erase, etc and stan of course means place or land of).

In general I say it in my unmarked American accent with the stress on the first syllable, with the vowels [æ, ɪ, æ] respectively.
