The wife is of Pakistani heritage, so "Pah-keh-stahn" is pretty much ingrained into my mind.

But every so often a "Pack-e-stan" does fly out.

Oh the look I get

Also on the "I get funny looks" list:

- I-ran
- I-rack
- Do-bye (Dubai, apparently really pronounced "Do-bay")
- Kaz-ick-stan
- Turkey (Not because I pronounce it like the subject of a Thanksgiving dinner, but because I always say "Turkey" three times like it's a song.  "Hey, did you hear about that earthquake in Turkey-turkey-turkey?"  No idea why, it's just funny to me )

so whats the proper pronunciation of Kazakhstan?

Kah-zah-kh-stahn

From what she's told me, all the 'a' sounds are an "ah" sound, and the I's are more of an E.  Hence: E-Rahn, E-Rahk, etc.

Which is what I just said.

Which is how the Roman Empire would pronounce it.

There is a whole bunch of study in the history of English that can explain why Americans, Brits, Kiwis, etc say things differently from the rest of the world.
