Relying too much on traction control, and then turning it off in cold weather, but not changing your driving habits leads to this... or if you want to say it without so much class... "not knowing how to drive causes this." He has only had the car for a few months.
 He is fine, just shaken up.
He got into first gear too hard, got off the side of the road, spun it around, hit a culvert which blew the tire, overcorrected and ended up in the woods. The carbon fiber roof and low center of gravity are probably the only reasons the car didn't roll.

That's why they exist: to be driven hard and occasionally one falls to the statistics. I hope he's insured through USAA so I can help pay for it.

Hope you can talk him into taking some lessons from a performance driving school/club. The local Porsche clubs usually have very good instructors or can direct to one.

The corner workers @ willow springs where brought in to talk with us @ a HP drivers class They said that Viper clubs and BMW clubs had the highest rate of wrecks! yes, your bud needs some class time |

I turn off the ASC (completely, by holding the button down for 10 seconds) often and the car can be a handful (...of fun). But I leave it on if the weather isn't good or I don't plan on doing anything that would require it to be off. I've learned my lesson on a 97' 328i when I turned it off in the rain and got on it way too hard in a turn... I repaired the damage myself and I learned an important lesson.
