A recent thread stirred a big debate.  Seems a "Firearms Instructor" told a student that a loaf of bread would stop a bullet, especially if the bullet was a Jacketed Hollow Point.

www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=5&t=419670

Now, we all know that if you read it on the internet, it must be true.  Right?  So, to the range.

My old buddy Tman doesn't get many "acting" parts in these threads, so I assured him that this was safe, and he agreed to hold the bread and let me shoot it with my 1911 Kimber in .45 ACP.

The results were tragic.

Just kidding.

Luckily for both me and Tman, we aren't stupid enough to believe everything we read on the internet.

Here's the actual set-up.

One Standard Loaf of White Bread.

First, we will try a round of .45 ACP Winchester Ranger SXT JHP, out of my Kimber 1911.

A pretty neat picture as Tman caught me in full recoil and you can see the crumbs blowing out the back of the bread loaf.

Here's the exit from the rear of the bread.

And here's the last couple of pieces with the hole through them.

Now, having dealt with the guys on AR15.com before, I know what you will say.

"Sure it went through white bread, but if you had used wheat bread, it would have made a difference."

So, here's a loaf of wheat bread.

And maybe the "Firearms Instructor" really meant to say that it would stop a round of .22 Long Rifle.

So, I tried a round of CCI .22LR HP out of my S&W.

Here's the results:

It went through it like an ex-wife through your life savings.

Lessons Learned:

1.  Sit down boys.  I have some really big news for you.  Everything you read on the Internet isn't always true.

2.  Just because someone is a "Firearms Instructor", that doesn't mean that they aren't full of Bovine Scatology (BS).

3.  Why do people repeat silly stuff about firearms when it is so easy to shoot stuff and see what really happens?  I just don't know.

4.  Shooting bread is fun.

(Thanks to Tman for the photo help.)

Damn it!   Where's the ketchup, OP?

Nice work!

I suggest that student print this off and go show it to his instructor

That bread was presliced! If you had a loaf of unsliced bread it wouldn't have penetrated all the way through!

No no, it would have stopped a round out of an M16, because it would be tumbling to much.

It would have stopped a 5.56mm, cause it would tumble end over end through the air and then bounce around inside the bread.

Wow!  No fair using depleted uranium cop killer dum-dum bullets!  A standard loaf of bread is rated only for the much weaker military armor-piercing hollow point ammunition.

Clearly, the bread dramatically slowed down the bullet.  If it can do that to a bullet, imagine what it will do to your stomach!

I almost pissed myself when I read that I was laughing so hard.

I'd add that 7 Grain bread is level III-A, as opposed to Sourdough, which is, II
at best.

I've heard an Eagle Arms toaster would stop a bullit... But only if it is fired from a gun that has a banana clip and flash hider...

Some of the shit you read and/or hear "gun owners" repeat is truly amazing. (Yes this vest is top rated on the Wonder Bread Scale)

Everybody knows how weak kneed the .22LR round is. Before I got my bullet trap I would testfire 22's I worked on into a old copy of the local phone book. Basic old 22LR like Winchester Wildcat would penetrate about 98-99% of a 2 1/4 inch thick yellow pages. Wonder how many loaves this would equal...?
