GOP senator unflinchingly defends officer who shot Ashli Babbitt

Republican Sen. Kevin Cramer (N.D.) appeared to reject one of the GOP and former President Donald Trump's latest talking points  who shot Ashli Babbitt?  while making a radio appearance on The Jay Thomas Show on Tuesday, CNN's Andrew Kaczynski reports.

When asked by a caller if Cramer could be the one to "leak" the name of the officer who fatally wounded Capitol rioter Babbitt, the senator responded, "Why would I do that?" The caller continued to push back, claiming he has "the right to know" because he is a "citizen of the United States.


Cramer replied that not only is he himself unsure of the officer's identity, but he believes that information is unnecessary because Babbitt was a "criminal" violating officers' orders. "They're protecting people and the officer was found to be innocent of any wrongdoing. So then what would be the purpose of releasing that officer's name? What do you need to know the officer's name for?"


The North Dakota lawmaker went on to say that he doesn't "know what the law says about releasing someone's name," but the officer is "not a suspect of any crime" and "it seems to be kind of a textbook situation, frankly." "I'm just grateful for this person, quite honestly," he adds.

After the House adjourned on Monday, Lt. Mike Byrd left his Glock 22 in a bathroom in the Capitol Visitor Center complex, according to sources familiar with the incident. Byrd is the commander of the House Chambers section of the Capitol Police and was on the job Tuesday and Wednesday.

Byrd addressed the incident at Tuesday morning’s officer roll call and, according to sources, told fellow officers that he “will be treated differently” because of his rank as a lieutenant. It was not clear what exactly the lieutenant meant by the comment.

Has he jumped to the defense of any other offficers involved in questionable shootings?

Of course not.

90% or more of politicians are going to defend threats to the system regardless of affiliation.  

They depend on the system and therefore will protect it whether they realize what their true motivations are or not.

If protest is going to be treated like insurrection, they shouldn't be surprised when next time people just go ahead and have a real insurrection.

Note that the events THEY riot about are things like the Brianna Taylor shooting, where a cop was actually shot executing a search warrant.

Now, I'm willing to discuss the Taylor shooting and look at what cops did wrong or discuss how our system does search warrants. But Ashli was simply shot and killed, in a premeditated manner, for attempting to cross through a broken window.
