Yeah, that happened to my mom.  She was pretty pissed when she found out the new hires she was training made more money than her (she worked there 20 years).

In America it's taboo to discuss compensation, but if people did companies wouldn't have the upper hand to play these kind of games.

Keep up or retire, many won't do this.

At 46 I knew it was time to retire because at some point old dogs can't learn new tricks.

And being retired at 46 is badass

Just don't get cocky, old guys have been there and made the mistakes you may soon make.

Keep bragging and they will let you fall on your face.

After 20 years and at 47 years old, I recently got retired - only without the retirement plan.
Just a thank you and appreciation for all the great work plus a nice cardboard box for my things.

Now I just have to figure out how to keep up this new schedule of mine.

I'm not a Millennial but they will hear the word pension many times when pensions go broke and the government has to bail them out.

Some pensions are better run than other but pensions can go away.

I'm not sure millennials will miss pensions.  With a 401k (or equivalent) or IRA, it's my money and I can invest it according to my own risk profile and retirement timeline.  I don't have to worry about the company or pension fund going bankrupt, the PBGC being underfunded, or the pension being modified detrimentally post-retirement.

Personally, I'll take a decent 401k match with low ER investment options over a pension any day of the week.

The correct answer is to get both and throw a Roth IRA on top of it. RR retirement will just be extra gravy.

I know that word. Born in 85. Not sure what gen I am. It's also overfunded at the moment so if any pension makes it until I retire this one has a chance.

I have been with the company 5yrs now. Like the OP I make more than 95% of employees here. Most of them have been with the company longer than I have been alive. All of them have been here 30+ yrs. i also get to work in a nice air conditioned lab while they work in a hot plant Some next to huge heat treat ovens.

I know it pains you guys to think how you caused the millennial situation but you handed out way to many participation trophies. You really fucked up your kids and possibly the country. Luckily I grew up in the woods for the first half of my life. Maybe a few of us will save this place. As soon as YOUR generation and YOUR politicians die off will wil get to work on a problem you caused but cannot/will not fix.

Enjoy our social security assholes.

ETA. Although I have the AC and the money i don't feel as if I am better than anyone here. I would get hit with something hard and heavy if I went in the back and told a manual machinist how to do his job. Luckily I like to learn. They enjoy teaching someone younger who is open to learning.

Then I show them how a young guy does it faster and better

"Oregon Trail" Millennial here. I put in 13 years with a major aerospace company, and would have retired from there if it weren't for the unethical safety of flight issues that myself and others couldn't get corrected. Luckily my wife and I started real estate investing during the crash, so I could afford to leave what I had worked so hard to achieve in 2016. I'm 33 and the only one I know that had a 401K and pension. I now have rolled that over into an IRA, and I'm not bragging, but the amount I have there could buy a pretty nice house in my area.

It sounds like you're doing well, OP, but life will deal you blows. Don't just walk around being cocky, but keep your head down, mouth shut, and listen to what some of the old timers can teach you. Be ready to use that stubbornness when it's needed. You're just a pup, you likely don't even know the lay of the land where you work yet. You have no idea who the enemies really are.

Although it didn't end the way I would have liked, I wouldn't trade those 13 years for anything. I learned about life and people there. I started at 19 as a temp, and by the time I quit I was the youngest Quality Assurance Inspector (started at 29) they had ever had. Not because I was cocky, but because I learned my job and worked my ass off.

To me, the bigger problem is not the pensions, it's the medical costs at the end of life.  The vast majority of medical bills incurred in an average person's lifetime are incurred in the last two years of life as 80+ year-olds try to desperately cling to life at any price instead of accepting death as a natural part of life.

it is not silly when it is factually correct.  Current EOL medical costs are staggeringly huge and fiscally unsustainable for the government/taxpayers.

It's silly from the standpoint that you know better.  You ain't stupid, man.

People are going to use the health resources available to stay alive as long as possible. That will never change so long as the decision making power continues to reside with the individual.

Once the government starts making the call as to who gets support or not, you've crossed over into that ugly area that we recently fought a global war over.

I used to be the guy trying make suggestions, but a decade and several workplaces later of finding attitudes exactly like that, have turned me into the grouchy old (for the profession) man who refuses to make suggestions unless pressed to.  I'll take my lowly 70k a year and code shit just like management wants, even when its a bad design and won't solve the problem they're trying to solve. They have their vision and don't need the help muddying the waters.

Then I go home and code something of my own to relieve the creativity itch.

I don't know their names but I've spent enough years in a shop environment to know cutting up with the young kid doesn't equal them not talking shit the moment you walk back in the AC.

Which was a brag. Like being assigned to a job in an AC area somehow makes you smarter or better. I've worked in plenty of shops and have seen the same thing all over.

You work in a manufacturing facility in the rust belt. I wouldn't count on making 30 years. Call it a hunch.

As for enjoying working I work for myself now which means I have an asshole for a boss.

Its good you are successful at your job but some free advice from a guy who was in your same spot twenty years ago: Manage your money, don't buy stupid shit, get as much education/certifications as you can on the company dime and be ready when the hammer falls. History says it will. Good luck.
