I may be wrong but I thought I read that you receive 50% of your mothers DNA and 50% of your fathers.  Their DNA is also split 50% from their parents.  There is a chance that one great grandparent could be 100% Native American but you may not receive any of their DNA depending on which 50% your parents/grandparents receive.

Of course they're not federally recognized and their response to that is that the federal government wants to save a buck and therefore doesn't want to give them their benefits.

I have some Indian blood, and could probably figure out the percentages if I cared enough to figure it out.

I know because-- and you can't make this up-- there is an entry in one of our family Bibles that has genealogy in it showing who married who, etc. that only lists one of my great x ? grandfathers as "married a damned Indian."

In a family BIBLE.

As for what blood means, as an adoptive parent, I contend that it means nothing.  Heritage is the values that you are raised with from generation to generation.  Even if I do have a drop of Indian blood, I am no more an Indian as I am a grapefruit.

On the other hand my adopted son is the direct descendant of a captain in the South Carolina Volunteer Militia that found the Revolutionary War.  My son is the next in line to inherit the same values of a man that named his own son "Liberty."

OP's wife is Not Guilty. And yeah...she looks like Laina's twin.

We just found out my wife is Native American but that was no big surprise. Her parents are from Cuba and Nicaragua.

27% Iberian (we know which relatives came from Spain)
16% Native American (we already chose a traditional name - Dances with Beagles)
7.3% Sub-Saharan African (Muslim occupation of Spain?)
4% East Asian (Yakut from Siberia - it shows in her eyes)
3% Great Britain
1.7% Italian
Short list of others each about 1% to include Korean, Sardinian, etc.
There was only 3.9% unassigned

There was another 25% Iberian (unspecified) but thats Spain and Portugal so not much of a mystery there.

She contacted 23 And Me to ask about Native American but they responded there still needs to be a lot more phenotyping of Central America to further identify individual tribes, so couldn't give more specific information.

My wife and daughter superimposed - we always wondered about the eyes. Mystery solved.

That's true. My wife has a great-grandfather from Austria (he married a Spaniard and moved to Nicaragua) but nothing from that part of Europe showed up in her profile. She reached out to 23 And Me with a lot of questions. They responded pretty quickly and confirmed what you just said. My dad told me that his Grandmother was full blood native american, but was an orphan so they never registered her. Not sure how accurate that is and I don't know what tribe off-hand (Im sure it was Cherokee right? lol).

However, I just did a DNA test through ancestry as well and ZERO native american in mine as well.

"From Austria" could mean quite a lot going back barely a century ago...

My dad's background is "German" and Czech & Slovak - from all the testing he's had done it appears most of the "German" is actually Polish thanks to Prussia's borders compared to today.  The Czech/Slovak looks to be more Austrian than anything...  The biggest thing I have an issue with these DNA tests are just how they come up with the labels - migration and borders over the last few millennia are pretty wonky when you try to place a label on someone.

Tldr:  Wife was led to believe her entire life she was Native American by crazy mother... Ancestry DNA test says "that is a lie"

Ok, here's the long version.  My wife has been hounded relentlessly by her Obama loving, Trump hating, Socialist mother to fill out an application to be accepted to the local spin off tribe of the Cherokee's.  Her main reasoning behind this is so that she can "get a check" when there's finally an Indian casino here ????.

We generally try to overlook the MIL's crazy, but I saw the perfect chance to shut her down...and the gamble paid off.   The wife's DNA results came back today and guess what??   NONE, NOT ANY Native American DNA.  55% Scandinavian, 14% Ireland, 11% Italy/Greece, 10% Iberian Peninsula, and 9% Great Britain.  Oh what a happy day!  Her mother is a "card carrying" member of the tribe and goes to their pow wows and assorted other shenanigans.

Just had to share one of my small victories tonight, and yes I know the rules... So I've posted a picture of her cracker ass below.  She would have been the whitest Native American I'd ever seen ??

My mother is real big on her Native American heritage. So much that it's one of the reasons they don't cut my nephews hair, "he's Native American". Hopefully the kid doesn't end up identity issues. While her test showed 20% that is probably mostly from Mexico even though we have a X great grandmother on the Dawes roll. To become a member of my the Muskogee Creek you only need to be a direct descendant of someone on the Dawes roll and all generations birth certificates. It doesn't matter how much.

And not guilty OP!

Because back in the day it was more socially acceptable to be of mixed blood from Indians than it was to be a mixed blood from Black Americans. So a lot of people that had certain ethnic traits claims it to be Indian instead of Black.

We were always told that my great great grandfather married a Cherokee woman. It's was found by my cousin when he was researching. I took it with a grain of salt. I also have been told I was Italian.

Well...

80.7% Irish/English (I've always been told I look very Irish)
0% Italian
.04% Native American
The bulk of the rest is Northwestern European - Northwestern Europeans are represented by people from as far west as Ireland, as far north as Norway, as far east as Finland, and as far south as France.

Now where's my check and casino?  (J/K)
