When dad took the family to Florida for spring break we always stayed at a Ho Jo in Tampa.
Edit - location was South Dale Mabry Highway, looks like the place is still there |
|
Parents would take us there every now and then. Always looked forward to it. Hot dog and ice cream.
Simpler times. Good memories. |

There seems to be one still in business in Warrenton, VA. At least it appeared so when I drove past it a couple days ago.

Oh yes, I spent many a late evening eating at Ho Jos during my college years.
|
|
Yup.
This ad featured the one by me in the 1960's Howard Johnson's Restaurants |

Loved that place. The fried clams were beyond awesome. The cheeseburgers were right there with them.
I've searched in vain for the last 40 some odd years to find clams as good. |
|
I have one down the street from me.
They just repainted the outside orange. |
|
The area which I grew up in was filthy with Howard Johnson's.
Stucky's too. |
|
Ah, yes. The good days. If I ever find a Genie Magic Lamp; one of my 3 wishes will be to travel back to the 50s thru the 70s for a few days at a time, any time I want to go.

Yes. The highlight of my week was when Dad would take us there for ice cream. I loved the peppermint stick. Now it's in every store, but then it was exotic.

I ate many a meal with my grandparents at a HoJo. Always ate the clams.
True story: One evening sitting there (now an adult) the subject of my grandfathers smoking pipes came up. I was smoking Marlboro's at the time and asked if inhaling from a pipe was at all harsh. Before he could respond my grandmother replied rather tartly "He doesn't inhale. The doctors told him after his heart attack that he couldn't do that any more." I immediately informed her that in fact he did inhale and that you could tell from the stream of smoke the difference between a puff and an inhale. She turned and inquired "That isn't true is it?" and not being one to even tell the smallest of fibs he told her in fact I was right. The look on his face as he stared across the table at me told me that I really needed to have a cup of STFU. Im pretty sure he was mentally pulling my tongue out of my mouth that night... |

Now the El Rodeo in Speedway, IN.
We used to go there after Wednesday night church meetings. Their Vanilla shakes were the best! Some of the Indy 500 drivers stayed there in the '60's and you could always snag a few autographs when they were having breakfast (nursing their hangovers...). Good memories. TC |

I remember there being one around when I was very small but I don't recall ever going inside.
|
|
I used to love going to Howard Johnson's with my folks.
The food was good and it was consistent regardless of which location you went to. They were most famous for how long it took to get your food. |

Nope - closed in '75 or '76 and became the Crosstown Inn shortly thereafter, but it's gone now too. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

I remember seeing a HoJo when I was a kid in the 80s and thinking they were all owned by Howard Johnson the ball player.

My first job as a teenager was washing dishes and cooking at a HoJos Restaurant. It was one of the best experiences in my life as far as learning how to work and get along with other people in the workplace.

Every Friday for the fish sticks and clam strips! All thanks to the no meat on Friday rule back then!

They had a hell of a cocktail menu as well! http://i1132.photobucket.com/albums/m570/highrailjon/Mobile%20Uploads/4D2FA190-B740-42FD-B644-511E3847138E_zps6xmowyy0.jpg View Quote |

There's only one left.....sort of; in Lake George.
I've eaten there many times when they were still all over the place and the Lake George restaurant was only one of them. |
|
There was one in town where I grew up. They have gone the route of Stuckey's.
|
|
Yep,
growing up in Washington Pa. on the same route were HoJo's ,Burger Chef ,Eat n Park,(where the chicks brought the food to the car on trays that hung off your car window). Mikky D's and Pizza Hut Route 19 |

From 2015
The last Howard Johnson's restaurant |

Back in the mid-60's, all, or many, of the rest stops on the NJ Turnpike were HoJo's. . . . . Every Saturday, my dad and I made the trek from E. Brunswick to Indian Mills for horesback riding (lessons for me, trail ride for my dad). . on the way back we'd stop, and I would have the NE clam chowder---which was very good, not full of corn-starch. . . .

|
We went to the HoJo bar so much that the barmaid kept copies of our blank time sheets for us. We'd fill em out while we drank a few beers after work.

I remember taking a road trip with my Grandparents when I was a kid in the early 80s. Utah, California, Arizona, Nevada and I'm sure some other States I can't remember. We were gone for a couple of weeks and I think we ate at Ho Jos and Cracker Barrel almost exclusively.
|
|
The last time I went there I ordered a roast beef sandwich, pictured on the menu, stacked with roast beef.
When the order arrived there was only one thin slice of meat so I called the waitress back and pointed it out. She said "the other roast is still frozen" and showed no sympathy. As I recall that's when I up and left. But yes, they used to be good. |
|
While I can not recall eating from one, I do recall using their bathroom. I was into RC cars, and at the time stores were not open on Sundays. We raced in a parking lot near one, it was the nearest bathroom.. that said, in Texas they were known as hotels more than resutursnts.
