I have a 2wd pickup as a daily driver that is getting older.  I want a second vehicle to have for fun and as a backup ride to work.  I am looking for something fun to drive around $3k.  I could spend a little more if I find something I really like.  Ideally I'd get a Jeep but the $$$ for a 6 cyl halfway running anything is close to 7-10k and 5k for something pushing the end of it's life.

What would you buy for $3K-4k?

Buy junker with decent chassis and straight body (crown vic, s-10, caprice, whatever) spend the rest on junkyard ls motor, tires, turbo. Have fun.

For that kind of money nothing gives you more fun than a motorcycle. Big one, small one, doesn't matter.

I have a DR650 with under 9,000 miles I'll sell you for that price.

You must pick up.

I would save that $3k to fix your aging daily driver. No way would I buy a second money pit.

It's fixed.  It's not broken.  I just want a backup and something different.

"Fixed" is always a short term status. :)
+1 for dual sport motorcycle then. I'm not a fan of riding on the street anymore but ripping up fire roads is a blast.

I'd probably get a beater SV-650 or maybe a mildly wadded-up sport bike to make into a redneck street fighter.

The guys suggesting motards or duelsports also have good ideas.

I can't imagine a fun $3k car, jeep, or truck that is anything close to reliable.  Jap M/C's are the best answer for fun and cheap, IMO.

I can't let the clutch out in most miatas due to the length of my legs. It gets stuck between the steering wheel and door.

This, in bold.  I have two Wranglers.  While they're both super-reliable, they're money pits for all the mods.  Oh, and I bought the older one used, a 2010, for over $20k.  Ugh.

Motorcycle is my suggestion.

Miata. I had a ton of fun with mine and got really into autocross. Shocks + tires and I placed in at least the  top third every event.

I put less than $500 into it and it was reliable, sold it a year later for a small profit… Any cheap fun car you get is going to need some work. The Triumph was simple and not much could go wrong.

If you go ahead and make it a manual top, or get a working one. Depends on climate, they are nice for 3 seasons, hardtop $1.5 to 2k depending on deal.

Suzuki sv650.  You should be able to find used ones in the 3kish price range.   Lot of fun for the money and it's a great starter bike.
