A $3k-$4k e36 will over the next year require at least that much money again to keep it in safe operating condition.  Maybe a used Cherokee?  Not going to be much in the "fun" category that isn't completely clapped out with that budget.

I live in va, love my Baja beetle for offroading. Alot of people use buggy in the woods, a good buggy will run with a rock bouncer, go places a stockist jeep could only dream.

Can somebody make these live?

Other people lower them and make them in to street rods.

You should be able to get a Wrangler thats mechanically sound, but maybe not cosmetically great, for around 5k. Or you could get an XJ. I want one as a beater/offroader/project truck.

Depends on how much work you can do, bought a well sorted out one for $2k, had less then $1.5 for hdpe inspection, yes many hours of turning a wrench.

There's the rub.  Generally a $2kish e36 is going to have every preventive maintenance item deferred for the last 50k miles or more.  So: new RTABs, new belts, new brakes, new shocks, new lollipops, new diff bushings, new guibo, new rear shock mounts, new strut mounts, new cooling system, probably new tires just because, and if you're dumb enough to try opening the sunroof, new sunroof parts.  And the fucking doors won't stay latched in cold weather because what the fuck do the Germans know about cold weather?

I'm zeroeing in on a 2004 mustang convertible.  Low miles, and in good shape.  I'll have to see what I can do on price but it's closer to my range.

lol.  I've almost bought a cheap 944 several times.  Glad I haven't yet.  The LS1 motor swaps are expensive and I'd just have to put an LS1 in one.

If you at all think you would want to ride a motorcycle, I would go that route.
