AK's are simple, reliable and shoot cheap ammo. If you need a rifle that fits those parameters then get an AK.

If you have any interest in military history it's certainly nice to be able to own one.
Having a couple cans of ammo and a half dozen AK mags isn't going to hurt whatever you imagine you need AR wise to feel safe. Variety is the spice of life. |

No one ever likes my answer..I've had several AK's and never had one that worked 100%, even with hours of work put into it. My collection has gone over to AR's these days. Never had any issues with them, unless it was a lower quality rifle with a low quality fit and finish, parts, etc.
ETA: Ok I did have ONE that ran great, my Yugo M70 was an awesome rifle. But I still ended up trading it for an AR

AK's are fun and cheap to shoot.I say get one and a few cases of ammo while its cheap.
I wouldnt buy one that costs $1000 or anything, keep it simple but fun. |

Kinda late in the game, but Hell Yeah; get one. Ammo is still relatively cheap and plentiful and there are as many varieties of AKs as there are varieties of ARs.

If you want it, go for it. I had to have my Arsenal AK. Saved up for months for it. Haven't shot it near as much as my AR since I bought it.

Yes. I've had a few AKs over the years. I've narrowed it down to one SLR-107. Great gun to shoot and has never had a FTF. I will keep it around.

If you're worried about import bans, there is domestic 7.62x39 (mags are cheapest and easiest to find for this caliber). There are also 5.56 AK's, but they may be more finicky (and pricy). The 5.45 is the sweetest of the bunch, but of course the cheap surplus is now banned.

I've owned a lot of different "assault" rifles over the years. I'll get flamed for saying it, however, the Mini-14 is superior to the AK. If you want an additional platform to an AR, I think the Mini-14 would be a better choice.

Mine is more of a novelty, and to say I have one. It doesn't get shot very much. Reliable and shoots reasonably well, but AR's are more fun. More accurate, less recoil, FAR superior sighting systems, better triggers, better ergonomics, a safety that is in a position that makes sense. The only downside is that ammo is slightly more expensive.

I really like my little Krinkov since it's so compact with the stock folded. But I hardly shoot my full size AK's. I much prefer the AR-15's when I grab something for the range. I mainly just picked up a couple of AK's to have a little more variety in my gun safe.

Meh...I had a Yugo underfolder and it was nice but traded it for an M14 and I still have not shot. I have a Draco that's going to get SBRed at some point, an RPD and an AK74 that I bought so I could shoot cheap ammo
Joke was on me, had to buy mags and then they banned the cheap ammo. I have 2160 of it still sealed in cans though.
The 74 is fun but LOUD! I guess same for the Draco. Yeah, get one if you can afford one as they are fun and relatively cheap to buy and shoot. Plus it pisses off the hippies like nothing else out there! |

I love shooting my ak. Hitting a 1' by 6" steel plate at 200 yards is quite a bit of fun ( even though I only hit it about 3/4 of the time) the rifles have ability but shooting with short shitty sights can be a challenge in itself. I do prefer a steyr aug or an AR though

While I am tempted sometimes to buy a Saiga to fuck with and convert, the fact is AK's are now expensive thanks to the need to use domestic barrels.

I bought an arsenal a few months ago to go along with my AR's.I ended up Selling it about 2 weeks ago after realizing its like shooting a 2x4 and not much fun to me.I appreciate them for what they are but,they just aren't for me.Its not a particular gun id be upset over not having if a ban happened.

As another poster said, reliable and they shoot cheap ammo. Not to mention, good optics are cheap.(Kalinka has good stuff. Side rail is effective, though cheek weld is irritating. Research before buying)
Get a WASR from Atlantic, they inspect them for defects. They're around $520, maybe $550 with shipping. Transfer will be around $25. While not the best, they're dependable and will give you an idea of how you should expect an AK to handle. See how you like it after you put a few hundred rounds through, then decide if you want to stick with it or get a better one. Moving up in quality with AK's will get you a better fit, more accurate rifle.(Arsenal, RD, etc) |

If you want to have an AK just to collect and shoot it for what it is, get an AK. It's a very good rifle.
If purely for having a practical shooting rifle, stick with the AR. If you don't have 2 ARs already, get the AR. They are so reasonable to build a quality one now, everyone should have several. And spare parts. I have a bunch of rifles just for the sake of having some historical variation to take to the range, but in a practical sense, nothing tops the current ARs. I used to have an SKS just to blast up cheap ammo years ago. Great rifle for what it is. But today, I can get 223 almost as cheap as steel x39 ammo, and have better sights, scopes, and all that. And if I manage to wear out the barrel, I can replace it (on an AR) for $150 to $200. The SKS and AK have gone way up in price, but you can never swap out and replace parts like on an AR. My $99 SKS and $279 AK were and are great. But at todays prices, a $600 AR compared to a similar priced AK is worlds better. |
