I once fell asleep driving down I-4 about 4AM.  I was coming up to an overpass and I heard my dead sister call my name, as if her mouth was right at the side of my head.  I could feel her breath on my ear.  It startled me and my alertness went to 100%. At this time, I began to crest the overpass just in enough time to see all lanes stopped at the base of the hill.  If I had not 'woken up', I would have plowed into the stopped cars like a bowling ball nailing the pins.

Weird.

Don't believe in all that.

But I also admit that there is more that I don't know than I do know.

My father was. He was about 8 or 9 when it happened. They were living in a small home during the depression and 3 brothers shared a single bedroom. One night he awoke to see a favorite uncle standing over his baby brother's crib, looking down at him. He watched his uncle look down at his brother, didn't think much of it and went back to sleep. The next day he found out that the Uncle had died that previous night.

And there was no medium involved.  Big difference in what you experienced and the subject matter in the Penn & Teller show.

It could be the dead, or it could have been your subconscious mind processing the subtle visual cues that went unnoticed in your reduced attention span.

Yup. My Grandmother (Mom's mom).  In a dream she said goodbye to me and kissed me on the cheek. I woke up immediately and smelled her perfume in my room.  My aunt called an hour later and told us she had died a couple of hours before. Still remember it like it was yesterday.

Same. A friend died in a climbing accident in Mexico. He came to see me in a dream shortly after his death to let me know he was OK and that I will be OK.

It really shook me up. I have never had anything like that happen before or since.

This was 20 years ago.

Ah well here goes ...I'll be brief as possible

My previous wife died of suicide .. Afterwards I was numb , did not care about anything or anyone ....For months heck about 2 years I drowned my sorrows in guilt ridden angst.
One night in a hotel room I dreamt about her and it seemed so real - words cannot describe , but  it seemed as though she came to me ...and all she did was look at me and ask me of I was ok . I cried so much it woke me up

I was once lost on the prairies of Montana for several days without food, water or footwear. I was washed down a creek in a flash flood while scouting out on a cattle drive. I collapsed one evening in hopelessness. I was awakened by my friend Deets, who urged me to get up and pointed the way back to the herd. Deets had been dead for some time.

Metaphorcally, in a dream.  It was very strange.  Two sisters who I knew briefly in life begged me to forgive their recently deceased sister for her bad behavior.

I'm not a religious folk but I had a dream about a little boy singing to me a couple years after my the wife's ectopic pregnancy that had been, removed.

It was heartwarming at first but then I woke up and felt with the strongest realism that it was what would have been my boy singing to me. . No bullshit, ghosts aren't real to me.  That did fuck me up for a while.  Still does actually.

Sure. It won't sound like much, but here it is.  My father died in a plane crash eight years ago. About a week after his death I had a dream unlike any I had ever had. He appeared in my dream, didn't speak just smiled.  I woke up and knew he had visited me to tell me he was ok.   I don't know how to describe the feeling I had, but I just knew.

So far nothing has fucked with my head more than my wife's first miscarriage.  The image on the screen during that first sonogram...I can only describe it as looking at a ghost.
I haven't been directly contacted by that little spirit since then, but I can say that he/she will always be there.

I don't really believe in this stuff, but this has happened a few times and is kind of weird.

Dad died from cancer almost four years ago.  We were very close and I considered him my best friend.  A couple times since then whenever something very stressful was happening in my life I felt something on my shoulder.  It felt like someone patting me on the shoulder and I felt calmer.  I don't know how to explain it.  It just felt like he was there.  Almost like I would forget for a minute that he was gone.

This happened a couple times when things got rough while dealing with mom's cancer/death and while my wife was being treated for her cancer.

I want to believe its possible, but I don't know.

The other thing that was odd.  Dad died when my son, his first grandchild and only grandchild he met, was six months old.  When my son was born we asked our parents what they wanted to be called.  Dad joked and said "he can call me grandfather".  Of course, he wasn't that formal and wanted to be called grandpa.  He died before my son could talk.  We always referred to him as "Grandpa in heaven".  That is what he knows him as and what he calls dad when he sees a picture of him.

When my son was around two he talked a couple times about his grandfather coming to play with him in his room.  We never called him grandfather.  He identified his grandfather as grandpa in heaven and pointed at pictures on the fridge.  He said things like he played with me and told me he loved me.  Hard to believe, but I want it to be true.  They would have had a lot of fun together.

My daughter was barely talking.  One night we hear her in her crib having a conversation.  Asked who she was talking to she said the lady that lives up there and pointed at the ceiling.  Then she said, " her name is Emily" which is my moms name.   she went on to describe my mother perfectly.  My mom had been dead about ten years at this point.  We didn't have any pictures of mom up (only in albums) and we never referred to her by her name only Mimi.  It was a profound moment in my life.

I was debating adding a story to the creepy thread.
The Chinese are very superstitious. The biggest religion in China isn't Buddism but Filial piety known as ancester worship.
Lots of Hong Kong movie stars pay $$$$ to  sages and spiritual mediums to get career advice.

Yes I know. Don't open doors you cannot close. Don't invite demons into your life.
In any case, Chinese folklore states that the departed love ones will come visit you and let you know in some way that everything is okay within 60 days after their death.

When I was a senior in college, I recall a vivid dream about two months after my grandfather passed away in the ICU in NYC. Grandfather let me know that he loved me and that he was okay. His passing was a very trying time for me since all my family was in NYC by his bedside but I was 600 miles away taking my finals and trying to graduate on time. I didn't. I should have been there. My dream did give me some peace.

One of my wife's closest friends in the hospital passed away suddenly from a pulmonary embolism. My wife told me she had a dream about two months after the funeral where she saw her friend smiling at her. My wife's sadness was lifted and all the chaos that surrounded my wife at the hospital disappeared. (A note, my wife's friend was like a big sister that protected her from all the catty female doctors and nurses that liked to bully the newbies like my wife.)

We are Catholic and we don't believe in these things but as a son of Chinese immigrants I understand it.

Well this is not really a talked to the dead kinda thing, but I guess it was a message that my great uncle, who was a father to me, was going to pass. It was a dream, extremely vivid dream.

He had open heart surgery in June of '05. He recovered, but conditions lead to congestive heart failure. He became weak from being in bed for months. Towards the end I don't think he was 100% there mentally. I remember being with him there at the hospital and he had a tube through his throat to drain the phlegm from his lungs. The doctors told me he couldn't speak because of it. Well it must have been clogged, because I remember him waking up, looking at me and smiling. "Hey Buddy!" he said glowing.

A few days later. I had a dream. I was going to the hospital to see him, and I had the feeling. He wasn't going to make it out of the hospital alive. I went to his room. And he was estatic to see me again. "Hey Buddy!" He said again, followed by "I'm ready to go home." I helped him out of bed, and walked him out of the hospital, his arm over my shoulder, bearing his weight to help him due to his weakness. As we reached the sliding doors of the exit. I woke up. Then and there I knew. It was his time.

A couple days later, his kidneys shut down and he needed dialysis. About a week later, his kidney specialist asked him if he wanted to continue dialysis, and if not, he would die. He declined, though I don't believe he truly understood what the doctor meant.

He passed in October. I'm an atheist. But that dream has been the closest thing that has brought to believe there is a God. Sorry guys rooms getting a bit dusty and the wife might think I'm crying.

I think a lot of the stories can be related to someones subconscious, whether they realize it or not.

But stories like yours, which seem to be fairly common, where there cant really be any seeds to make the subconscious do its work, make me scratch my head.  Interesting stuff for sure, and not easily explainable.

I cant say for sure but I think about this some:

Last winter I was woken up in the middle of the night by some gripping fear. There was no dream that I recall to precede this, but I woke up scared to death, and not just scared but as if I was being watched. I kept thinking to myself "someone knows all my secrets." I got up and cleared the house with a gun, then looked out all the windows of the house for foot prints in the snow, but there were none. But I just knew I was being watched in some way, by someone. Its an odd, indescribable feeling, but I know that night, someone looked at me and knew everything there is to know about me.

My grandfather was in nursing home care at the time slipping in and out of life, and drew his last breathe 24 hours later.

I cant help but think those two things are related.
