Knowing how to operate multiple vehicles is never a bad thing.

Most people are so childlike and willfully stupid that teaching them how to drive a stick is maybe number 127,892 on the list of things people should be forced to learn.

If I was going to start forcing people to do stuff, I would have them read "1984" over and over until they actually understood it.

I don't know if the following is anything relative to what NY_Shooter was thinking, but learning to drive a stick is a very direct and intuitive method for learning how your car works, and what it's doing, when you press the pedal.

But either way, theres no legit reason NOT to learn.  Refusing to learn, anything, is retarded.

What an idiotic question.

There is no way in hell I would transport my two-year-old on a motorcycle.

And considering I actually have THINGS in my truck... no.

How about not "forcing" anyone to do anything?  Sound awfully liberal.

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

I wouldn't use the word force so much, but it would be awesome if it were a required skill to obtain a driver's license, even if it was just the 16 hour MSF course.

Where I live there are a great many weekend riders, so folks are somewhat used to seeing motorcyclist, and do look for them sometimes.  Unfortunately you hear about folks getting killed pretty often during riding season, I haven't seen one yet that the majority of the fault belonged to the rider...

There's no importance of it anymore, as today, almost every profession minus the sport or transportation/logistic industry, uses automatic transmissions when driving anything is concerned. I can't speak for rigs since I don't know if they drive stick or not, but regardless, learning to use a stick isn't like learning to ride a bike. After a good time, muscle memory doesn't remember and has to be reeducated. It also hinder's the ability to muti-task while driving while trying to maneuver and use a function in your vehicle.

Using a stick doesn't give you a better understanding of your vehicle, but experience just driving alone does. I've driven in snow, flash floods, hail storms, fog, desert, jungles, and amphib operations while crossing rivers while in the service and on my own. Experience, is the greatest teacher, not a style of driving.

Everyone in this country should be forced to learn by doing the following
-Drive a car
-Ride a motorcycle

-Basic maintenance on the above 4
-Basic fire fighting
-Some sort of useful martial art
-First aid
-Read maps

All of this can be taught in high school.

Certain things I very much agree, but for half of it, I do not.Driving a car is a way of life versus riding a motorcycle, is a chosen lifestyle. Everyone should learn to shoot, but not everyone should own a gun, obvious reason's why. Fire fighting, first aid, second language, reading maps, is important as it's very essential to society as a whole, martial arts, I'm not too sure, unless you're using it as a form to instill responsibility and discipline (which is useful for gun shooting too). As for maintenance, not everyone has the ability to problem solve before wrenching, as reasoning's can be blocked by those with a total loss of emotional control while frustrated.
