Why must states send a dollar to DC to have it filtered through the bureaucracy in order to get back a fraction of what they send? The Feds have no business in education. Education should be a community endeavor.

Agreed.

"When an opponent declares,

'I will not come over to your side.'

I calmly say, 'Your child belongs to us already…

What are you? You will pass on.

Your descendants, however,

now stand in the new camp.

In a short time they will know nothing

else but this new community.'"

Yes, I went straight-up Godwin's law.

Deal with it.

Or, to put it another way, "It takes a village."

Wait until you start hearing about Common Core.

It's a complete and total takeover of state control over education and puts nearly 100% control in the hands of the Federal Government.

It's really creepy stuff, and it's currently underway.

It even has requirements that children undergo an annual 400+ question data point collection test, and IIRC require the children to wear biometric data collection bracelets.

Bill Ayers, The Tides Foundation, and Rupert Murdoch, yes Rupert Murdoch, are just a few of the supporters of this program.

Gov't run youth propaganda camps are essential to the Leviathan State we "enjoy" today.  We must indoctrinate our youth to never question big brother for the success of all citizens and the destruction of the arrogant burgoise.

See Poland, that's where public education came from.  No matter how much money you throw at it, it will only get worse.  I support the complete disbanding of the Dept of Propaganda and the elimination of ALL public schooling.

How many kids has the Dept of Education, actually educated ? ZERO
How many Kilowatts of Energy has the Dept Of Energy generated ?  ZERO

How much stuff has DOT transported ? ZERO

How much Commerce has the dept of commerce engaged in? ZERO

etc How many regs have the above and others created to STOP education from taking place, energy from being produced, goods getting to market and stifle commerce? MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS.

Govt doesn't make things happen it throttles and stifles them from happening

And WHY do they need shotguns?

http://usgovinfo.about.com/b/2010/03/18/why-the-dept-of-education-needs-shotguns.htm

While the U.S. Department of Education's notice of intent to buy
27 brand-new Model 870 police-grade 12-gauge shotguns may conjure up
visions of jack-booted federal thugs marching down the halls of your
local grade school, the Department's need for the guns is valid.

It's awfully difficult to change the thinking and control the thought of future generations if you have 50 states, each with multiple school districts, doin their own thing. It must be centrally controlled, or the "progressive" agenda would fail. That's why.

Just think, conservatives used to be against the DoE.
George Bush doubled the size of it.

We have such depts because people expect the government to do things for them that the government shouldn't do. I imagine most here send their children to public schools. It is just another form of government handouts/ welfare that is probably ok with most because they do it. In reality they are perpetuating the nanny state and taking taxpayer dollars. So I guess the answer to you question is because people think the government should be responsible for raising and educating their children.
