Fire alarm went off at work during lunch today. Manager on vacation, and I was left in charge of department. Most folks were still at their desks as we had a shortened day due to T'giving tomorrow and lots to do with Friday being a half-staff day. Heads popped out of cubes - "Is it a test? Is it a test?" No, not a test. They let us know when there are tests, as they did recently. I grab my bag, throw phone into it, quickly grab my wrap from back of chair and travel mug from desk, and begin to head out. That's when I noticed a few folks were still at their desks. I went back to roust them, and they were VERY reluctant to leave. A very loud "Out! Now!" from me finally lit a fire under their arses and got them out of the building. These few were grumbling a bit, though, at me having "forced" them away from their desks.
Turns out the warehouse that abuts our warehouse/office was having some work done. Guys accidentally busted a water line, which set off fire alarm. At least that's what we were told. I've one heck of a strong work ethic and work pretty long hours, but I'm not so fond of my job as to refuse to leave my desk during an unscheduled fire alarm. WTF? 
I wanted to tell the reluctant ones, "If you burn up, fine! No skin off my nose since you didn't want to leave!" |

I have had 2nd and 3rd degree burns, So I always get out if an fire alarm goes off, and it is not a drill.

I'm one of those dorks with the orange hats and clipboards. Official Floor Monitor. I'm like Dwight Shrewt in my building. Everyone is GTFO in 2 min or less. Hell, after I'm done evacuating my floor I find another building and start kicking down doors. i don't even care if their fire alarm is going off or not. No such thing as a drill in my world

Our fire drills are very rare. Fire Marshall had to threaten a fine if we skipped it for a second YEAR. Then a real fire alarm went off and managers told people to stay on the phones. When they finally decided to evac, they made everyone exit a single fire exit for the department even though others were closer, to make it easier to count heads. During drills only certain exits are used for the same reason. Almost 4k people on site. Total clusterfuck all the way around, and no one checks off names anyway. Good luck if you've got your ipod cranked up and in a back cubicle.
I'm like ^^, Navy firefighting taught me to grab an extinguisher and follow the smoke, but working here I'm more inclined to GTFO. |

Our office bldg is full of government trash ( Parks Dept hippies, tree huggers and obama voters ).
Those dipshits routinely burn toast and what have you to the tune of the alarms going off at least once per week. I pay no more attention.... |

I've been in a fire. People seem to think that you can wait, assume its a false alarm and leave when you actually see heavy smoke or flames.
That is positively stupid. I get up, check it out and usually leave unless I can verify that there is no fire. |

As for being in a place off the job when the alarm sounds? If I'm by myself I might snoop, if HH6 and daughter #2 are with me I might send them out and snopp, but if it's the daughter and me we GTFO. |

We do these periodically at work.
The last one was while the President of the company was having a televised 'town hall' in the building. I imagine someone was fired 'for cause' for that one.
(I slapped my laptop shut, grabbed my shit... and went to a different building. Heck, I was camping in a vacant desk anyway...) |

Since I deal with life safety systems where I work, I check the emergency exit door to be sure it's clear, then send all but me and one other person out of the buiding. I'll leave the door open til I see a reason to leave (smoke/fire/creaking noises/actual water flowing, etc...) i don't much care what other people in the building do. I'm not responsible for them.

Alarm goes off I GTFO. BTW, I never don't have my keys with me, as I'm often far from my desk.
I'm not taking any chance with fire, I boogie. It sure as hell isn't worth my life to get a few minutes extra work in. At least the place I work now isn't full of toxic gases like all my previous companies. |
