The way that is set up is much more dramatic than just static before / after pics.
I've never seen that done before. You can go back and forth to get a better understanding. I had no idea it was that bad. |

Don’t build on a sand spit 6 inches above sea level. Here in Oregon there are certainly houses, businesses and infrastructure at risk of storms. But very few people role the dice like they do back East. We get 100-150 MPH wind storms on the Oregon coast EVERY YEAR and don’t wash away. I still cease to understand human interest with living right on the coast line. Sure its cool to have a beach as your backyard, but nine times out of ten it will eventually become your front yard and that is an inevitability.

lots of buildings built too close to the ocean...
A lot of places on the coasts of FL have a rather large set back... Look at the third picture. Houses still in one piece... Road... What should be undeveloped land but instead has houses that were destroyed by the storm surge... Expected storm surge distances in most of the pictures. Flooded low lying areas that are mostly roads and parking lots... which if they are designed right are actually supposed to be lower than the buildings around so the water goes there instead of in the buildings... About the only WOW pic in there is the barrier island that was cut in two. ... That's what happens... barrier islands change shape... disappear... and so on... that's why they need to be evacuated during storms and insurance there is so high... Oh and the title of that should be "Weak Cat 1 storm Sandy has predictable storm surge: before and after" Learn from places that get these storms frequently... Also support the victims. |

You seem to think I'm dismissing the damages as "not that bad" Which is not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is that the damages are as expected/unsurprising. The damages aren't uncommon and building codes in those areas need to change to reflect that fact. The fact that buildings were allowed to be built in those locations at all or weren't built to withstand this amount of storm surge is what outrages me and should outrage everyone else. |

My family has had a beach house in Bay Head, New Jersey for nearly 60 years. Thankfully it survived, but looking at the pictures of Mantoloking and the areas around the house, I cant believe how lucky we got.
