wait a minute, you mean barrier islands were supposed to be barriers, not places to build homes?

what the fuck, who woulda thunk it?

and of course us taxpayers get to pay to rebuild all that misguided shit.

they play, we pay...

moral hazard, anyone?

The way that is set up is much more dramatic than just static before / after pics.

I've never seen that done before.

You can go back and forth to get a better understanding.

I had no idea it was that bad.

I'm sure it's bad, but from an areal view it doesn't look like much got pushed around other than sand.

Maybe I was expecting something like the Japan before/after pics

It's not that bad. It sucks, to be sure, but all that shit is hardly even close to being 'that bad.'

Figured that might be what you meant.  It is a cool use of technology.

Strange that we have to go to an Australian website to see this.

Maybe I'm not seeing it right either. It looks like all the same picture. Maybe I'm just use to seeing gulf states after tornados/hurricanes.

That’s somehow supposed to be shocking?
Don’t build on a sand spit 6 inches above sea level.

Here in Oregon there are certainly houses, businesses and infrastructure at risk of storms.  But very few people role the dice like they do back East.  We get 100-150 MPH wind storms on the Oregon coast EVERY YEAR and don’t wash away.

I kinda feel the same way. After seeing the japan tsunami damage this really is nothing in comparison. Not that people didn't and aren't suffering in NY/NJ.

I still cease to understand human interest with living right on the coast line. Sure its cool to have a beach as your backyard, but nine times out of ten it will eventually become your front yard and that is an inevitability.

lots of buildings built too close to the ocean...

A lot of places on the coasts of FL have a rather large set back...  Look at the third picture.  Houses still in one piece... Road... What should be undeveloped land but instead has houses that were destroyed by the storm surge...

Expected storm surge distances in most of the pictures.  Flooded low lying areas that are mostly roads and parking lots... which if they are designed right are actually supposed to be lower than the buildings around so the water goes there instead of in the buildings...

About the only WOW pic in there is the barrier island that was cut in two.  ... That's what happens... barrier islands change shape... disappear... and so on... that's why they need to be evacuated during storms and insurance there is so high...
Oh and the title of that should be "Weak Cat 1 storm Sandy has predictable storm surge: before and after"

Learn from places that get these storms frequently...  Also support the victims.

I'm taking this as sarcasm... and an indication that you misinterpreted my post.  You seem to think I'm dismissing the damages as "not that bad"  Which is not what I'm saying.

What I'm saying is that the damages are as expected/unsurprising.  The damages aren't uncommon and building codes in those areas need to change to reflect that fact.  The fact that buildings were allowed to be built in those locations at all or weren't built to withstand this amount of storm surge is what outrages me and should outrage everyone else.

That's the ticket.

We have a public that seems shocked that landforms such as barrier islands and shorelines are - holy crap - really fucking dynamic! Just like climate is on a longer term.

Matthew 7:24-27 where the Bible says:
Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

Stupid people build their houses on the sand. Even a 2000+ year old book knows this.

Of course that's not something they have to worry about this winter as the grid won't be rebuilt until next spring.
