Cisco locks customers out of their own routers, only lets them back in if they agree to being spied upon and monetized

Owners of Cisco/Linksys home routers got a nasty shock this week, when
their devices automatically downloaded a new operating system, which
locked out device owners. After the update, the only way to reconfigure
your router was to create an account on Cisco's "cloud" service, signing
up to a service agreement that gives Cisco the right to spy on your
Internet use and sell its findings, and also gives them the right to
disconnect you (and lock you out of your router) whenever they feel like
it.




Not good, IMO.  I don't think I'll be buying any more Cisco product.

Routers are cheap.  I'd bash the thing inside out and send it to their headquarters, after having replaced it with a competing brand that doesn't demand spying rights.

I agree that this sucks (and was a huge PR mistake on their part IMO), but it only affects a few models, and you can downgrade the OS to avoid the issue. Apparently the upper management did it to try to improve the service by looking at aggregate usage data, over the objections of the engineers.

I'm familiar with that, and Tomato for the older units.  I had an old Linksys running Tomato for a while.



Today, I've got a Netgear that my PS3 likes a whole lot more than the old Linksys.



I'm thinking this is a terrible PR decision for Cisco.

God durn awful decision by upper management.  If this is true, I can see IT guys recommending family and friends to buy anything except Cisco for a home router.  Maybe not much on their bottom line, but their PR could suffer big time.

DD-WRT has been good to me.

Most of my network functions any more advanced than the firewall are handled on my server anyway.  Couldn't ever get the DD-WRT VPN to work.

I was on the Cisco Forums and they caught hell over this here is the way to fix the problem according to Cisco.

What a bunch of Intrusive Fucks.

Well I am glad I heard about it, I just bought an EA4500 about an hour ago. Still shrink-wrapped and in the Best Buy bag. Goes back tomorrow :-). Will get another E4200 instead.

No shit they are fucktards!! My dumb ass just bought an EA2700 two weeks ago.

I may take it back to walmart. To roll the software back, I have to unplug it plus reinstall software. I could just as easily put it back in the box and return it.  

What does the Hive recommend as a replacement if I do?

I'd love to see them try this with their IOS-based products.  I'm a huge Ciso fanboy and I realize their Linksys products are crap, but this is a ridiculously bad way to handle any part of their business.

If they did that with their IOS products they would lose customers enmasse.  I rolled back my EA4500 it was not an issue that caused me a great deal of heart burn . I just won't be giving them more patronage for their home consumer products. I am willing to bet they get sued over this as well. This is prime class action territory and was clearly a bad move on their behalf.

My D-Link has been running well, DIR-655N I believe.  Powerful home router, and easy to set up.  

Powerful in it's day anyways, I haven't had a reason to check lately.
