I've been to gatlinburg and don't really want to go back there again. I want to whitewater raft and do a little hiking and maybe mountain biking. The girlfriend is yapping about asheville, n.c. but it looked a little boring from their websites. Any suggestions?

Cruso, NC!!! we have the Parkway, pisgah moutain inn, plus all the trials you want to hike.

Quoted: Asheville ain't bad, hippie-filled though. The civil engineers that fucked up that abortion of road design that is ashville were not just hippies, they are mutant freaks that no amount of drugs can kill, and they were on them all, maybe even some we have yet to discover. But other than that, like ashville. |

Asheville ain't bad, hippie-filled though. San Francisco of the East coast. Homos and hippies galore. I left that area 4 years ago for a reason. Lived there for 24 years and finally had enough. |

gatlinburg or cherokee, probably gatlinburg, more bars and shit to do

Robbinsville is really nice in a sleepy backwoods mountain town kind of way. I've been going there three times a year for the past 10 years. Check it out.

Boone? Boone is nicer than Asheville, IMO. Lots to do in the Boone/Blowing Rock area. Grandfather Mountain is a day's worth. |

Go to Helen, GA. There is plenty to do in the area and it is not too far from the majority of the white water rivers in the area.
|
|
I would suggest going to Tellico Plains, TN.
Use these cabins - Linkery Dinkery Doo Eat at this place in the morning - FOOD! Ride on this road on a pretty day - Tail of the Dragon White water rafting down the road on the Ocoee - Rafting Enjoy! |

The hippies have drum circles downtown every Saturday night. And big triangle shaped guitars. |

I like finding one of those cabins in the mountains with the hot tub and all. If I want to go into town or up in the mountains to hike, I drive. |

About an hour or a little more from the Ocoee River and less than two hours from the Nantahala River. Staying in Blue Ridge, GA puts you much closer, but there's not very much to do in town, there. |
|
Asheville isn't too bad if you stay out of downtown where the freaks are. There is pleanty to do, the Biltmore Estate is nice, Chimney rock is a short hop. Grandfather Mountain is nice, but I recommend a day at Linville Falls (IMO the prettiest place in NC).
Fontana, NC has some pretty areas. If you have a sports car or bike you will want to run the "Tail of the Dragon" 413 turns in 11 miles. Asheville has the luxury hotels. |

Maggie Valley is pretty nice, for a tourist town.
The Wheels Through Time Museum is there, and the BR Parkway is nearby. Cherokee isn't far. Just DO NOT stay at the Meadowbrook Resort, if you go there. It is only a "Resort" for bugs. |

Murphy, NC. Eric Rudolph hid from the Feds there for several years.

Grandmother, Aunt and Uncle, lived in Mars Hill. Small town /nice little college. Dry county though (at least when I was there, it probably isn't anymore).

I can see how that could happen. I ride a nice, quiet bagger now, out of respect for others and to stay off the radar. |

One of the only negative things about spring/early summer around here. The constant BLAAAAAP BLAAAAP BLAAAAAAAP echoing through the mountains that folks supposedly come to to "get away from it all". It's sad to see the middle/older aged folks scraped up off the roads wearing a shredded black t-shirt and jeans too after wrecking their bikes. Sure tourists crash cars too but no where near as much as the bikes on the curvey roads. |

The only thing I liked about our trip to Gatlinburg was the Smokey Mountain Knife Works. Awesome store! Traffic was nearly unbearable, though. We won't go back, unless it is in off season (and there really isn't one, anymore). The area around Cashiers, NC is really nice, and might have most of the outdoor activities you are looking for, OP. |

Walk on the rope bridge in Blowing Rock.

Lake Lure, NC, near Bat Cave. It's where they filmed Dirty Dancing.

It would be ok if they would just lay off the throttle. Almost every rider just has to go WOT at every opportunity after slowing for a curve. I do see a lot that just cruise, straight pipes and all they can keep their rides tolerable. It's the "look at me, i'm so unique, I'm riding a loud bike through the woods and it's sooo powerfu, just listen to it echo throughout the whole f-in park! Born to be Wild!!!!l" douches that ruin it for all. OP, there are a ton of out of the way places to go, depending on time I would plan to stay at a place for the night when arriving and just wing it from there. Cruise around and find another place for the night each day. Steer clear of the tourista areas and traffic, head to the real stuff along the mountains. Stay out of the Newport area, stick to the known attractions and plan your route from looking at the places on the net. Have fun, welcome! |

I agree with the OP about not liking Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge. Last time I was there it looked like International Dr. In Orlando FL.
Nothing but a big tourist trap complete with cheapo t-shirt shops with non-English speaking shop keepers. Like said before, go camp in Cades Cove and see what the real mountains were like.

We just got back yesterday from Pigeon Forge, but we have munchkins. We went to Dollywood, Go-Karts, Dixie Stampede, Go-Karts, Parrot Mountain, Go-Karts, Doc in the box (son picked up some kind of bug), Water Park at some over priced resort, Go-Karts. Did I mention Go-Karts? There are a ton of things to do in Sevierville/Pigeon Forge, just make sure to bring your wallet. The two things we noticed when we drove down the strip were Pancake restaurants and Go-Karts. There was one store that you might want to visit: http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/3301/beefjerkeydepot.jpg You should have taken the kids to ride Go-karts while you were there. There are a couple of places to do that, if you look hard enough. |

Walland, Townsend,Wears Valley.
Anywhere along 73/321 hwy. Way less traffic and only 20 minuites or so from the tourist traps if you want to head that direction. |
|
Avoid Gatlinburg and Pigeon forge like the plague. If you like hiking though i recommend Ramsey Cascades. 8 miles, great view at the top
