Robbinsville is really nice in a sleepy backwoods mountain town kind of way. I've been going there three times a year for the past 10 years. Check it out.

Go to Helen, GA. There is plenty to do in the area and it is not too far from the majority of the white water rivers in the area.

Use these cabins - Linkery Dinkery Doo Eat at this place in the morning - FOOD! Ride on this road on a pretty day - Tail of the Dragon White water rafting down the road on the Ocoee - Rafting Enjoy! |

About an hour or a little more from the Ocoee River and less than two hours from the Nantahala River. Staying in Blue Ridge, GA puts you much closer, but there's not very much to do in town, there. |

Asheville isn't too bad if you stay out of downtown where the freaks are. There is pleanty to do, the Biltmore Estate is nice, Chimney rock is a short hop. Grandfather Mountain is nice, but I recommend a day at Linville Falls (IMO the prettiest place in NC).
Fontana, NC has some pretty areas. If you have a sports car or bike you will want to run the "Tail of the Dragon" 413 turns in 11 miles. Asheville has the luxury hotels. |

The only thing I liked about our trip to Gatlinburg was the Smokey Mountain Knife Works. Awesome store! Traffic was nearly unbearable, though. We won't go back, unless it is in off season (and there really isn't one, anymore). The area around Cashiers, NC is really nice, and might have most of the outdoor activities you are looking for, OP. |

It would be ok if they would just lay off the throttle. Almost every rider just has to go WOT at every opportunity after slowing for a curve. I do see a lot that just cruise, straight pipes and all they can keep their rides tolerable. It's the "look at me, i'm so unique, I'm riding a loud bike through the woods and it's sooo powerfu, just listen to it echo throughout the whole f-in park! Born to be Wild!!!!l" douches that ruin it for all. OP, there are a ton of out of the way places to go, depending on time I would plan to stay at a place for the night when arriving and just wing it from there. Cruise around and find another place for the night each day. Steer clear of the tourista areas and traffic, head to the real stuff along the mountains. Stay out of the Newport area, stick to the known attractions and plan your route from looking at the places on the net. Have fun, welcome!

We just got back yesterday from Pigeon Forge, but we have munchkins. We went to Dollywood, Go-Karts, Dixie Stampede, Go-Karts, Parrot Mountain, Go-Karts, Doc in the box (son picked up some kind of bug), Water Park at some over priced resort, Go-Karts. Did I mention Go-Karts? There are a ton of things to do in Sevierville/Pigeon Forge, just make sure to bring your wallet. The two things we noticed when we drove down the strip were Pancake restaurants and Go-Karts.

I agree with the OP about not liking Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge. Last time I was there it looked like International Dr. In Orlando FL.
Nothing but a big tourist trap complete with cheapo t-shirt shops with non-English speaking shop keepers. Like said before, go camp in Cades Cove and see what the real mountains were like.

Avoid Gatlinburg and Pigeon forge like the plague. If you like hiking though i recommend Ramsey Cascades. 8 miles, great view at the top
