Well I'm getting tired of AT&T and Apple's choke hold on my wallet. However I like and am used to my IPhone and it's functions. Specifically the ability to be on the phone open a web page or other app. What are you guys using and why?

Have both: Iphone issued by the job and Droid Incredible 2 as my personal phone. All I can say is my Android phone is leaps and bounds better than the IPhone. Much more intuitive and customizable than the Iphone can ever be.



That said, this is a 9mm vs. .45 argument and you'll get those who will defend either phone vehemently. Find an Android phone, play with it and make your own decision.

The only way to be on simultaneously (on Verizon),  is to be connected to wifi.  I hear they are working on bringing that function to Verizon soon.

I have the droid 3 now and can't say enough about it.  No 4g with my phone and doesn't look like it's coming soon.  

The best phone I have seen so far is the Galaxy Nexus.  That phone is bad to the bone.  Very smooth 1.2 duals in it (I think) and I hear it's been overclocked to at least 1.5 and maybe more.  I say go finger fuck the phones at the store, you may not like screen size/qwerty boards/other functions that some phone's offer.

I have been a verizon cutomer for as long as ive had a cell phone (10+ yrs) and I will never use another carrier. I lusted after an iphone for years but could never have one because up until last year Apple products could only be purchased by AT&T customers and under no circumstance was I changing carriers. Once the 4S was released on VZW in October, I got one and literally could not be happier. In the 2 years prior to Oct 11' I owned a Blackberry Curve and a Droid X so I think that I can say with some qualification that the Iphone is superior in almost every aspect. Keep your iphone and move over to VZW, I doubt that you will regret it.

I have an iPhone and Samsung Galaxy SII.

I leave the iPhone home, and forwards all the calls to the Samsung,  What did it for me is the lighter weight, larger screen, thinner phone, and IMHO, better looking screen.

Verizon iPhone.  I tried many Android sets and never found the quality or usability of the iPhone.

HTC Vivid here.  Runs fairly nicely.

Funny thing is apparently Vivid Video filed a lawsuit against AT&T and HTC over the use of the name.  Seems to me they should have just come up with a porn app for the smart phone.

I have had a Droid X since last March.  Just got the wife an iPhone 4 for Christmas.

I will be getting an iPhone as soon as my contract is up in Nov.  Like most things Apple, it just works.

I just switched from a blackberry to a Android based galaxy s2..... There is no comparison... That said I have been looking at both the iPhone and Droids for awhile.  Never having owned an iPhone I can only say playing with the Droids was easier and faster to understand the basic functions. The I phone did seem better built then any of the phones I looked atandroid has a ton of apps, so many I dont know where to start.
Ive had the Droid for 4 days now  andlike it.

The iphone isn't bad, much better than a BB (I know I'd take one in a heartbeat over any non-android phone).

Android is gaining market share quickly and it will eventually be a 2 OS world - Android & IOs making up 90% of software sales for smart phones (We're almost there anyways).

The reason I like android so much is the fact that there's quite a bit I can do without apple's chokehold over the software. The ability to transfer a mp3 via USB to my phone and get it to play or use as a ringtone is quite nice. Unless my understanding is wrong, you'd have to have a file with DRM on it to work on a iphone. On top of that, there's alot of great 3rd party software that can't be developed for the iphone but can be as Apple has to review all the software for the phone. Sure, it means potentially crappier software on the phone, but it also means that they don't censor it as much.

As far as reliability goes, Apple wins overall against the entire base of Android enabled phones. However there are some phones like the galaxy that absolutely destroy the iphone as far as reliability goes. iOS is a good OS as long as you don't want to start customizing things, changing them around and tinkering. This is just fine for many phone users, but I could never ever be ok with the fact that a manufacturer is actively trying to destroy attempts at custom software creation.

Battery time is typically better on Iphones compared to Android phones as Apple will underclock their processors to save battery time. Most people will not notice a difference between the speed of a iphone & android phones as the Iphone is running on a unix system which speeds things up. The new 1.2ghz capable dual core phones are starting to become noticeably faster than Iphones though, and with overclocking there's no comparison. The new Razr Maxx looks extremely interesting as the battery time is nearly double that of the iphone and more than double for the average android powered phone. Most android phones also have upgradable batteries that can be purchased on Amazon for under $50 to double or even triple your talk time. Batteries for iphones can not be replaced by a user. Very rarely will you ever need to replace them, however I've known 2 people to have their iphone batteries leak and cause problems which required shipment to the factory.

With my 4g nexus droid phone on verizon, I can talk and surf at the same time.

I went phone shopping last Monday.  I've had a first generation Droid for several years, so I asked the salesman what the advantages were with the iphone, and if I should change.

He explained that the main advantage with the iphone is battery life, and that over half of an iphone is actually battery.  He said that the disadvantage is that Apple charges for nearly every ap, and that since I was used to getting free aps with the Droid, that might be something that I would want to consider.

I finally decided on a Droid Razr.  It has some battery life issues, but since I drive for a living, I can always plug it in to the car charger.

I like how thin the phone is, but since my motorcycle is my primary means of transportation (when I am not at work), I bought an Otterbox case for it.  Dumb idea.

It was like taking a very thin, very light phone...

and wrapping it in a brick.  

The salesman may have been full of it on the advantages and disadvantages, but it was the only information I had to go on.

I dumped my iPhone for a Droid X and never looked back.

The iPhone 4 and 4S are very nice, but I can't put up with the tiny screen.  After using a phone with a 4.3" screen, there's just no going back.

I was going to say the same...my work provides an iPhone, I use a Droid. I like the features of the Android OS much, much better. I love that one can use widgets on their desktop with the Droid. The iPhone desktop is a dumbed-down "Fisher Price" gui in my opinion.

I love my jailbroken iphone.
You can barely tell it's even an iphone all the pluses with many of the con's removed.

I love the battery life on my iphone also.
The iphone make it easy to support others which is another reason I like it.

Prob get the wife a droid so I can learn to hack that thing up, I must admit I hate the droid interface vs. iOS.
Plus the phones feel REALLY cheap and very plastic, not that that's a deal breaker though.

You pickup a new Galaxy 2 vs an iphone and the Galaxy feels like 1/2 the weight vs. iphone even though it's twice as big.

Several different companies make Android phones. If you think one feels cheap, check out another brand. I'm somewhat loyal to the HTC's...they are solid phones.

Galaxy S2 > Nexus > iPhone

Went from an iPhone 3 to a 4  to the HTC Vivid. IPhone does some things android doesn't and android does things iPhone won't.
I like the ringtone setup and I can customize the hell out of my vivid but couldn't on the iPhone. There are apps I had on iPhone I can't get on the Android I wish I could. Battery life is the only major difference so far. The android battery doesn't last as long. But is way faster.  I'm keeping the android.

No issues with an HTC EVO Sprint service in a bit over a year. It is best in 4G areas, but even 3G isn't bad. Tons of free apps.

Skyrocket > S2 > Nexus > iPhone

 

Like I said no deal breaker, just a bit when you hold both.

I have an iphone 4s and my boss has the galaxy sii (that he loves).  I like the 4s ok, but I have to say that that galaxy is very cool.

The galaxy is also significantly more reliable than the iphone as far as drops and damage go.

I really like my Droid Charge from Samsung.  Fun little toy.  Otterbox is a $25 well invested too.

My friend is counting the days till he can shitcan his Droid X and get an iPhone.

He was all about the droid, the a couple months ago he started saying he can't wait to get an iPhone.

There are people who did the same thing, just the other way around.  I'd play with both phones and make your own decision rather than go with what the internet fanboys suggest.  I have an iPhone 4, when I can upgrade in the summer I'll spend some time playing with droids before I make any decision.

I have the Galaxy S2 and absolutely love it.
I have been with sprint for years and when they were getting the IPhone I considered one.
The sales rep talked me out of that and I put my BB down and got the S2.

The 3 things thing I like about the screen is size, clarity and duribilty.
It is so scratch resistant I took the clear screen protector off since I hated the glare.

Also having an 8 mega pixel camera built in is nice.
There are times I get a call at work to take a picture and the quality is great.

Now when I pick up a friends IPhone it looks and feels so tiny.

And thick, heavy, and the screen is small.

Find an old phone.  Get proficient at "popping the battery out".  It will be a useful skill once you get your android.

Don't sell your old iphone, hold onto it so 2 months later you can switch back and it won't cost you $700 like it did for me (2 iphones and changing BACK to ATT)

My $10 magpul case has made my iphone survive many drops.

I have already dropped my Skyrocket but the Otterbox defender has kept it alive.  The Skyrocket is a bit slippery too, so having the otterbox is actually kinda nice.

I have an iPhone 4S and my dad has a motorola Droid phone.  While I have had zero problems with my iPhone, my dad has had to exchange his phone several times for a new one due the the software turning the phone on all by itself when he wants it turned off.  Not sure if that is a Motorola issue or software issue, but even though like somebody say  that the iPhone is like the Fisher Price of smart phones, I like the simplicity and it just plain always works like it is supposed to.

i had a magpul case on my pervious iPhone 4...
one day i open it up and the back glass is completely shattered.  no idea when it happened, but i dumped that case and got something else with my 4S.

I have a droid X and i love it.  It's a good phone, works well.  Tough as nails.

When I do get a new phone, it will be an I-phone (hoping we can tough it out for a 5).....because of the standardized nature of the apple line.  While you are stuck with apple, you are also availed of all the aftermarket a standardized product brings.  

I have both an Iphone (4S) and recently picked up on an AT&T re-up, a Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket. I wasn't thinking when I re-upped my Verizon and went from the 3g to to the 4S, and missed out on the Nexus (AT&T doesn't have the equivalent yet) but decided to get the Skyrocket as I'd been wanting to try a droid based phone, and I'm glad I did! The droids offer so much more in terms of customization/tweaking which is why I decided to try it. I love the reliability of my 4S but the droid based phones are just plain fun to mess with. I've also noticed some features that both phones share, work better on the droids, like the talk to text, much better on the S2 than my 4s, and the power tweaking features are a nice feature as well, and even though I don't use it that much, the cameras are nicer on the S2 (front and back). Honestly, both phones are outstanding, but if you're looking for something you can really tweak to your liking, a newer generation droid based phone, either Skyrocket, Nexus, or Razr are good choices IMHO.

What apps have you gotten for the Skyrocket?  How about that visual voicemail.  One of my favorite features.

 

I like my droid because I can go swimming with it in my pocket or drop it with out consequence .

I'd rather have a phone that works than one I can tinker with.

We were out for dinner and one of the folks with us had an Android powered phone and we were comparing features... the Android was 'faster' & 'gamier' than the iPhone and it was a pretty slick device. I'm still in the iPhone camp... it just works and has a more reliable and robust feel to it over-all. The iPhone 4S is a quantum leap from the others before it, much faster and 'cleaner'.

If you're 'gaming' on the phone, it seemed like the Android system would be the way to go. For general  use, the iPhone seemed a good choice. For 'professional' use like using technical 'apps' for work, especially medically related apps, the iPhone works very well.

A lot of my younger 'colleagues' are so well versed in 'techno' terms that they could care less whether it's Android or iPhone they just know how to make it work.

That weight feeling is because of all the metal and glass in the iphone.  Drop one and you'l see why samsung's is lighter.  Heavier shit breaks harder when it falls.  That's why iphones with cracked screens are so common.

 

If you want a hobby, if your self-image is dependent on beating technology into submission, if your ego is threatened by being called an iFag, if you need to calculate moonshot trajectories in furlongs/fortnight using reverse Polish notation, if lack of support for Flash is deal breaker, then get an Android.  Otherwise, get an iPhone.
