im thinking that is the answer. Is the Football carrier a military representative or SS?

The duty rotates between the services, its an O5 billet IIRC.

Was your job as an LEO to protect the president or protect/keep control of the other people? If something were to happen, what would you do? Draw your gun? Is that what the badges were for - so that they could easily identify you were on the good side and not shoot you should something happen?

If the Secret Service needs your help (local LEO, State Troopers, etc) for their protection detail/perimeter, you get to wear a gun and have ammunition.  If you show up at the White House for a tour with your deputy dog badge, you go in unarmed.  I know of instances where the president met with troops who were getting ready to deploy and they had the soldiers remove either the firing pins or bolts before the meeting.   It depends on who is running the detail and how anal they want to be.  But, they know they need the local help, so they play nice.  Usually, the chief and his buddies get nice pics with the president if it is a semi-permanent site (e.g. President Bush's ranch near Waco).

2005-2006, but I wasn't exactly hanging around with him. Our guy met with him or attended the same event that he did a couple of times. I try to stay in my lane when it comes to White House stuff because my experience is so limited. Again, my actual White House knowledge and experience is pretty thin, but what would be the purpose of putting a holstered pistol and spare mag carrier on a Marine there ...and notice that it's only one of the two Marines visible in that shot... if it's just for show?

Consider that the lawn of the White House and the tarmac at Andrews AFB are not the only places where Marine One sets down, and it might be a good idea to have folks with guns to protect the birds while they're on the ground. There are also other armed Marines at other places the President goes, so why should this one Lance Corporal be an exception? Either way, if it encourages idiots to behave when they might otherwise act up, it serves its purpose.

My dad (Navy Commander) carried the football under President Ford.  He was not armed.  Had to go through all kinds of special decompression training in case Air Force One was hit and lost cabin pressure, etc.  He hadn't asked for the assignment, but was trained in communications and I guess that was part of the selection process.  Never talked much about it, but he was away from the family a lot.
